Nancy Lenehan has joined the cast for ABC’s comedy pilot “Drop-Off,” the network announced Thursday.
The “A League of Their Own” actress will play series regular Marianne, the loving and warm mother of Julia (Ellie Kemper), herself a working mother who struggles to balance parenting with her career. Per the announcement, Marianne is a character who, after seeing the pressure of being a single mom, was more than happy to lend a hand in helping with the care for her grandchildren. But her attitude takes a shift for the selfish as she readies to reclaim her “me time.” Marianne isn’t afraid to embrace her other passions, including an affair with a suitor named Rene.
In addition to starring, Kemper serves as an executive producer for the pilot alongside Michael Showalter, who directs, and Julieanne Smolinski, who is set to write the pilot. Lenehan joins a growing cast list,...

Exclusive: Michaela Conlin has been cast as a series regular opposite Ellie Kemper in ABC’s Drop-Off (working title), a comedy pilot based on the British series Motherland, from writer Julieanne Smolinski, Sharon Horgan and Clelia Mountford’s Merman Television, Paul Feig’s Feigco Entertainment, Lionsgate and ABC Signature. Judy Greer and Karan Soni also star.

This is a comedy for anybody who’s dropped their kids at school, breathed a sigh of relief … then realized it’s Sunday.
Conlin’s Liz is another single mom at Julia’s (Kemper) kids’ school. She’s cool, doesn’t care. Unlike Calvin and Julia, Liz doesn’t like the inner circle of moms at their kids’ school and doesn’t want to be part of them. Liz lives a bit of an alternative lifestyle — there’s pretty much nothing in her apartment except a giant mattress on the floor — and her breezy disregard for the status quo is comforting to both Calvin and Julia.
Michael Showalter directs and executive produces alongside Smolinski, Kemper, Horgan, Mountford, Stacy Greenberg and Kira Carstensen for Merman Television, Paul Feig and Dan Magnante for Feigco Entertainment as well as Holly Walsh and Helen Serafinowicz.
Conlin will next be seen in Taylor Jenkins Reid’s adapted feature One True Loves, opposite Simu Liu. She also will be seen in the upcoming feature Junction, opposite Sophia Bush, Jamie Chung and Hill Harper. On television, she most recently appeared in Hulu’s Dollface opposite Kat Dennings, Brenda Song, and Shay Mitchell. Conlin is known for her role as Angela Montenegro in Fox’s Bones and also played a key recurring in Apple’s For All Mankind, among her other credits. Conlin is repped by Mosaic, APA and Joel McKuin.

If broadcast Pilot Season is any indicator, the Peak TV numbers are in for a rude awakening.
A decade ago, ABC, CBS, The CW, Fox and NBC collectively ordered an eye-popping 98 comedies and dramas during Pilot Season 2013. That figure, the most since THR began tracking overall volume in 2012, is now considered a relic of the past.
With the Covid-19 pandemic effectively wiping out Pilot Season 2020, the networks were forced to lean into the year-round programming strategy many had discussed but hadn’t really executed. Now, the shift is in full swing as the overall volume of pilots ordered across the five networks is likely to hit another low after they collectively picked up 35 comedies and dramas last season.
What’s more, the economic downturn has also prompted broadcasters to be more selective in how many scripts they buy and which among those will actually get made. Network executives — including new presidents at CBS,...

Fox’s legal drama Proven Innocent has been officially dismissed. The cancellation of the midseason series, from Danny Strong and Stacy Greenberg, comes about three months after its debut. It had been fully expected.
The procedural was poised to fill the Bones void on Fox. Since its premiere, the ratings have been steadily declining, which had a low debut as it had tough competition on a Friday night.
The series was set in a wrongful conviction firm. Led by a fierce and fearless female lawyer with a hunger for justice, the team reopens investigations, putting their own lives in danger to exonerate the innocent that were ‘proven’ guilty. Our lead’s motivation comes from her infamous past; as a young adult she was found guilty and later exonerated in a high-profile case in which she became a tabloid sensation, household name and national celebrity. While the fictional overturned murder conviction at the center of “Proven Innocent” isn’t based on one particular real-life case, that doesn’t mean Fox’s new legal drama won’t be pulling from actual examples of people who were — and some who weren’t — proven innocent.
“For the case of the week, I wouldn’t say they’re ripped from the headlines,” executive producer and writer Danny Strong told TheWrap in an interview ahead of “Proven Innocent’s” series premiere last Friday. “They are usually very loosely inspired from a case that we’ve heard about. Like we wanted to do something on transgender issues or we wanted to do something on the racial hate movement, the death penalty, shaken baby syndrome.”
“Certainly, we’ve been inspired by real-life cases too,” Strong added, before detailing one that he truly became obsessed with while working on the show’s first season.

Kelsey Grammer has been cast in the upcoming Fox drama “Proven Innocent,” Variety has confirmed.
He takes over the role of Gore Bellows, played in the pilot by Brian D’Arcy James. The character is described as a tough-on-crime state’s attorney who goes up against the underdog legal team that is at the center of the series. The producers of the series were said to have enjoyed James’ work in the pilot and hope to use him in a future role.
Grammer is best known for playing the title character in the acclaimed sitcom “Frasier,” for which he won five Emmys. He originated that character on “Cheers.” Grammer is also no stranger to the Fox family, having voiced the villainous Sideshow Bob on “The Simpsons” going back to 1990. He also recently starred in the Amazon series “The Last Tycoon” and currently lends his voice to the Netflix animated series “Trollhunters.
