Aaron Raitiere excels at writing the kind of country songs that blend a biting sense of humor with a little something extra, like the righteous indignation of Caylee Hammack’s spiky “Just Friends” or the winking desire of Maren Morris’ “Tall Guys.” The Kentucky singer-songwriter brings all of this to the fore on his new solo album Single Wide Dreamer, shuffling through a group of songs that convey empathy and humor alike, in the tradition of John Prine or wordplay master Roger Miller.

The track list includes a few songs from the bare-bones Marfa Tapes that are gussied up for Palomino, like “Geraldene” and “In His Arms.” There’s also a wealth of new compositions, many of them with songwriters Luke Dick and Natalie Hemby. Dick, Marfa Tapes alum Jon Randall, and Lambert produced the record.

Anderson East reckons with a collective need for clarity in “Drugs,” the funky new release from his upcoming album Maybe We Never Die. The follow-up to 2018’s Encore, Maybe We Never Die will come out August 20th.
Veering away from the retro R&b sounds that have been a mainstay of his albums, East cooks up a bass-driven disco groove for “Drugs” that’s accented by theremin and perky flute runs. The Alabama native adopts a silky falsetto for most of the tune, pondering the eternal difficulty of facing reality.

Lady Gaga broke out in 2008, and since then her career has spanned music, film and TV. She’s an Oscar, Grammy, BAFTA and Golden Globe winner, among other plaudits. Lady Gaga is all but certain to win at least one Oscar for “A Star is Born”: Best Original Song for “Shallow.” While she faces some stiff competition for Best Actress from Glenn Close (“The Wife”) and Olivia Colman (“The Favourite”), our official racetrack odds have “Shallow” far out front among the 15 songs still in contention at the upcoming 91st Academy Awards. Lady Gaga co-wrote “Shallow” with Mark Ronson, Anthony Rossomando and Andrew Wyatt.
We had thought that Lady Gaga would reap two Oscar bids for penning songs for the picture but the studio decided to submit only “Shallow” for consideration by the music branch. Originally, it had been pitching two of her other tunes: “I’ll Never Love Again,” which she crafted with Natalie Hemby, Hillary Lindsey and Aaron Raitiere; and “Always Remember Us This Way,” which she co-wrote with Hemby, Lindsey and Lori McKenna.

Turns out Lady Gaga won’t be competing with herself at the Oscars when it comes to the Best Original Song race. The updated Fyc site for “A Star is Born” now lists only “Shallow” under that category. An earlier version of this listing had included two other tunes that she co-wrote for the film: “Always Remember Us This Way” and “I’ll Never Love Again.”
The Academy Awards allow only two songs per film to be nominated so at least one of these three would have missed the cut. With the other contenders from “A Star is Born” out of the running, “Shallow” is sure to be nominated and is the clear frontrunner in the race.
While this move makes strategic sense, it does rob Lady Gaga of another Oscar nomination. Having a rival song in the race didn’t keep “La La Land” tunesmiths Benj Pasek and Justin...

Bradley Cooper won’t get five Oscar nominations for “A Star Is Born” and Diane Warren may have to wait a little longer to get her 10th nomination and first victory. That’s because Warner Bros. has submitted three tracks from “A Star Is Born” for Best Original Song consideration, and none of them are penned by Cooper or Warren.
As posted on its Fyc site, the three tunes are “Shallow” (duh), “I’ll Never Love Again” and “Always Remember Us This Way.” All three are co-written by Lady Gaga. “Shallow” was also written by Mark Ronson, Anthony Rossomando and Andrew Wyatt. “I’ll Never Love Again” counts Natalie Hemby, Hillary Lindsey and Aaron Raitiere as its other songwriters. Hemby, Lindsey and Lori McKenna also penned “Always Remember Us This Way.” The Oscars has a two-song limit per film, so all three won’t make the cut.
