Warner Music Group reported fiscal second-quarter revenue of $1.5 billion, up 7 percent from a year ago, and net income of $96 million, up from $37 million a year ago. While both numbers saw a jump, the company reported earnings per share of 18 cents per share, below Wall Street expectations of 20 cents.
The bottom-line results were driven by a strong operating performance — $12 million in savings from a March 2023 restructuring plan — and the impact of exchange rates on the company’s Euro-denominated debt, which led to a gain of $21 million in the quarter compared to a loss of $20 million in the prior-year quarter.
“Our performance in the quarter was driven by an acceleration in Recorded Music subscription streaming growth and continued momentum in music publishing,” said Bryan Castellani, CFO of Warner Music. “Encouraged by the continued growth in engagement and value of music, we remain focused on delivering on our strategy and driving long-term shareholder value.

Kaitlin Butts Is Sitting In an East Nashville coffee shop, wondering if she should tell Vince Gill that “Come Rest Your Head on My Pillow,” their romantic duet from her new album, Roadrunner!, was actually inspired by a woman in a funny but slightly crude tank top.
“It had ‘cowboy pillows’ written across her chest,” she says, laughing quietly and pulling her cow-print jacket up to her face like a privacy screen. Butts had been wandering around after her set at the Two Step Inn Festival in Texas when she...

Monday’s episode of The Voice — and the end of Season 25’s Playoffs — served up a painful reminder that sometimes it’s not enough to be “cute as a button.” Chance the Rapper and Reba McEntire had to shrink their teams of five contestants apiece to just three each. Along the way, some promising singers were cut (although, to be honest, none that I was as sorry to see go as Anya True and Mafe last week). Which six acts were the last put through to the Lives? Luke Combs is the man of the hour. The 59th Annual Academy of Country Music Awards nominations were announced on Tuesday morning, April 9, and Combs came out on top with eight bids, including Entertainer of the Year. Check out the complete list of nominations here.
This is Combs’s fifth nomination in a row for Entertainer of the Year, an award he has yet to win. This year he’s up against Kane Brown, Jelly Roll, Cody Johnson, Chris Stapleton, Morgan Wallen and lone female nominee Lainey Wilson. Women are consistently underrepresented in Entertainer of the Year, though Carrie Underwood won in 2020 (in a tie with Thomas Rhett) and Miranda Lambert finally prevailed in 2022. But we mustn’t underestimate Wilson here. She pulled off a huge upset at the CMA Awards last fall, claiming Entertainer of the Year despite being relatively new on the scene.

As Willie Nelson once sang, there’s no place but Texas — and some of country music’s hallmark awards shows seem to agree. Taylor Swift has given the world some of the most popular love songs of modern times. A love song by a well-known indie band knocked her off of her feet. She said the tune was dark, but it managed to capture the true feeling of romance. Notably, Swift went on to work with the band in question.
Taylor Swift said this love song feels ‘like a memory’
During a 2015 interview with Rolling Stone, Swift was asked to name the music that made her into an artist. Some of her picks included Carly Simon’s breakup song “You’re So Vain,” Faith Hill’s country-pop love song “This Kiss,” and Jimmy Eat World’s crossover hit “The Middle.” One of the folk songs on the list was Bon Iver’s “Blood Bank.” Swift must be a big Bon Iver fan since “Blood Bank” is not one of the band’s more famous tunes.

Amid his rise to music stardom, Zach Bryan has frequently drawn comparisons to Bruce Springsteen for his earnest, vivid songwriting and energetic live shows. Even Springsteen has taken notice, as The Boss spent an off day on his own world tour to jet back to the east coast and join Bryan on stage in Brooklyn on Wednesday night.
Springsteen made a surprise appearance during the encore of Bryan’s show at Barclays Center as the two teamed up to sing the unreleased song “Sandpaper.” Springsteen then stuck for “Revival,” even playing a guitar solo during the rousing finale. Maggie Rogers, who appeared earlier in the evening for “Dawns,” also joined in on “Revival.”

Springsteen is due back for a show in San Francisco on Thursday night, so it says a lot about Bryan that The Boss was literally willing to fly across the country for a two-song cameo.

Zach Bryan has never hidden his deep love for Bruce Springsteen, so there was no reason to think he was sending any hidden message when he used “Johnny 99” as his walk-on music Wednesday night in Brooklyn at Barclays Center, or even when he came onstage in a Springsteen tour T-shirt with the sleeves cut off. But when Bryan started his two-song encore with the chords of his as-yet-unreleased song “Sandpaper,” Springsteen himself strolled onto the stage without warning.

Pilgrimage Music & Culture Festival has revealed its 2024 lineup, featuring Hozier, Noah Kahan, Dave Matthews Band, and Needtobreathe as headliners.
The annual two-day event is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year at The Park at Harlinsdale Farm in Franklin, just south of Nashville, Tennessee. This year’s festival is set for September 28th and 29th.
While Pilgrimage often skews towards country, folk, and indie artists, this year’s lineup also boasts acts more in the vein of pop, bluegrass, and jazz, many of whom are local or native to the Nashville area. Pilgrimage 2024 promises sets from Lukas Nelson, Coin, Charlie Worsham, Stephen Sanchez, The Cadillac Three, Cassandra Lewis, Sierra Hull, Charles Peña, and Celisse.
“We couldn’t be more excited about our announce, and this year’s lineup checks all the boxes we could hope for to celebrate our 10th anniversary,” shares Better Than Ezra frontman and Pilgrimage co-founder Kevin Griffin.

There may be no more natural pairing for CMT Crossroads than Nickelback and Hardy. Both appeal to country and rock audiences, both worked with producer Joey Moi, and both have a song called “Rockstar.” On April 6, they’ll mash up their respective styles — and their “Rockstar” singles — for an episode of CMT’s crossover performance series.
Recorded in Nashville earlier in March, the episode features Hardy and Nickelback frontman Chad Kroeger trading verses on Nickelback’s “Save Me” and “Animals,” and Hardy hits “Truck Bed” and “Give Heaven Some Hell.

Zach Bryan gave his unreleased song “Sandpaper” its live debut Friday night as his Quittin Time tour rolled into Newark, New Jersey.

At that time, Bryan shared only 45 seconds of the in-the-works “Sandpaper” on acoustic guitar, but Friday night in Newark, the song — believed to be an ode to his girlfriend Brianna Lapaglia — appeared fully formed and four minutes,...

Zach Bryan kicked off “The Quittin Time Tour” at United Center in Chicago on Tuesday (March 5th), delivering a 25-song set that spanned across his growing discography and also featured a surprise appearance from Kacey Musgraves.
To begin the show, Bryan played “Overtime” from his most recent studio album, Zach Bryan, and “Open the Gate” off of his 2022 breakout effort, American Heartbreak. Bryan then dipped back to his 2019 debut, DeAnn, to perform “God Speed” before going into his unreleased song “The Great American Bar Scene.”

The country star continued zig-zagging through his catalog, performing some of his biggest songs alongside other favorites like “Nine Ball” and “Oklahoma Smokeshow” and older cuts like “Condemned” and “Heading South.”
Undoubtedly the biggest moment of the evening was when Bryan brought out Musgraves to duet their No. 1 hit (and Consequence Song of the Week), “I Remember Everything,” for the first time ever.

Go ahead and add another record to Beyoncé’s laundry list of accolades, as “Texas Hold ‘Em” has debuted at No. 1 on Billboard’s Hot Country Songs chart, making her the first Black woman to do so.
The song dethroned Zach Bryan and Kacey Musgraves’ “I Remember Everything,” which had towered over the chart for 20 weeks. As confirmed by Billboard, the artist’s other new country-tinged single, “16 Carriages,” wasn’t far behind at No. 9.
Both tracks boasted impressive streaming and sales numbers in the week following their surprise release midway through the Super Bowl. Billboard reports that “Texas Hold ‘Em” nabbed a cool 19.2 million streams and 39,000 traditional sales, while “16 Carriages” commanded 10.3 million streams and 14,000 sales. Beyoncé’s previous dip into country stylings, “Daddy Lessons,” also saw a spike in attention, with that tune’s streaming numbers increasing by a factor of 370%.
