Disney continues its tradition of releasing a new animated film over the holiday. Generally this release strategy has paid off with hits such as Frozen (2013- $67.3 million domestic opening), Moana (2016- $56.6 million domestic opening), Coco (2017- $50.8 million domestic opening), Ralph Breaks The Internet (2018- $56.2 million domestic opening) and Frozen II (2019- $85.9 million domestic opening). Of course the past few years saw those stellar Disney openings drop off a bit with 2021’s Encanto starting off with $27.2 million, although that movie really caught on when it hit hime video/ streaming. The same can’t be said for last years flat out bomb, Strange World which opened with just $12.1 million and finished with only $37.9 million.
This year Disney looks to right the ship with Wish, the story of a girl who wishes upon a star and that star comes to life. Basically the story Disney has been pitching us for the better part of a century!

Sometimes dreams do come true. When Disney legend Andreas Deja was 11 years old, “The Jungle Book” played at his hometown in Germany and after watching it, he was hooked. He remembers how it cast a spell on him and how he knew right there and then that he wanted to take part in the Disney magic.
With the help of his English teacher, he wrote to the Mouse House and to his surprise received a reply. Deja relates: “It basically said that if I was serious about the animation done at Disney, I first had to become an artist in my own right.”
From that day on, he began his deep dive into the world of animation, poring over magazines, newspapers and books and later enrolling in art school. While at school, he wrote to Eric Larson, one of the legendary Nine Old Men of Disney lore, who after looking...

Earlier this week, on the Disney forum DISBoards.com, a user named KYMickey posted a meme of a demonic-looking white man with a passing resemblance to Gov. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis threw a hissy fit this week after learning that Disney had outwitted him — quietly pushing through changes that would prevent DeSantis’ Disney oversight board from regulating the Mouse House’s district for decades.
“We’re going to look at things like taxes on hotels, we’re going to look at things like tolls on the roads, we’re going to look at things like developing some of the property that the district owns,” DeSantis threatened.

Saturday Night Live’s “Weekend Update” with Colin Jost and Michael Che took multiple swings at Fox News and Donald Trump on the show.
After Jost introduced a topic about a study that revealed that a child throws a tantrum an average of four times a week:
“Weeknights on Fox,” Jost quipped as an image of Fox News hosts Sean Hannity and Tucker Carlson appeared.
Che followed up with news that Rupert Murdoch’s engagement to Ann Lesley Smith had been called off.
“She got cold feet after Murdoch passed his physical,” Che joked.
A bulk of the jokes at the beginning of the segment focus on Trump’s arraignment where he was indicted with 34 felony charges.
Jost called Trump’s lawyer, Joe Tacopina, “Phony Soprano” in reference to The Sopranos’ lead character.

If you were, as I was, a big fan of ABC’s workplace satire Better Off Ted, it may feel slightly surprising at first that Netflix’s Unstable hails from the same creator — Victor Fresco, credited this time alongside stars Rob Lowe and John Owen Lowe.
Where Better Off Ted’s Veridian Dynamics stood as a paragon of corporate greed, Unstable’s Dragon is actively doing good for humanity while also making boatloads of money. The biotech firm’s founder and CEO, the improbably but impressively named Ellis Dragon (Rob Lowe), is no greedy stuffed suit but a charismatic genius entrepreneur who actually lives up to the sort of hype once lavished upon the likes of Elon Musk and Elizabeth Holmes. If Better Off Ted felt prescient in its cynicism toward business, Unstable’s sunny outlook can’t help but feel a little out of touch with the current disillusionment toward Big Tech and billionaires.

Iran continues to be gripped by nationwide protests against the Islamic regime, demonstrations sparked by the Sept. 13 death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini, while in police custody, after having been arrested by Iran’s morality police for allegedly violating Iran’s strict rules requiring women to cover their hair with a hijab.
The protests are the largest and most sustained bout of civil unrest to grip Iran since 2009 and are seen by many as a true threat to the future of the country’s Islamic rulers.
While Amini’s death was the spark that ignited this current wave of demonstrations, unrest had been simmering all summer in Iran, and the response by the police has been brutal.
