A federal jury in New York has convicted investor Bruce Garelick on insider trading charges.
The case revolves around Garelick’s involvement with Digital World Acquisition Corp., a publicly traded company, and his alleged disclosure of non-public information regarding its planned merger with Trump Media, the owner of the Truth Social app.
Donald Trump, the majority shareholder of Trump Media, was not implicated in the case against Garelick, held in the U.S. District Court in Manhattan. Trump himself faces unrelated criminal charges in Manhattan Supreme Court about a hush money payment to Stormy Daniels, a former adult film star.
Two co-defendants of Garelick, Michael and Gerald Shvartsman, had previously pleaded guilty to insider trading charges on April 3.
After closing arguments from the prosecution and defense, the jury in Garelick’s case commenced deliberations on Wednesday. After several hours of deliberation, the jurors returned guilty verdicts on the five counts...

Update: Judge Juan Merchan told the prosecutors in Donald Trump’s hush money trial to pass along a message to one of their likely witnesses, lawyer Michael Cohen: Please stop talking or posting on social media about the case.
Moments before the day in court ended early around lunchtime, Judge Merchan took up a request from defense lawyer Todd Blanche, who said, “Mr. Cohen continues to speak publicly about this trial.”
Blanche cited a TikTok post this week by Cohen wearing a white t-shirt with a picture of Trump behind bars. He asked that Cohen — the lawyer whose $130,000 payment to Stormy Daniels in 2016 triggered the Manhattan District Attorney’s investigation — be ordered to not talk about Trump or the criminal proceedings against him.
Assistant District Attorney Joshua Steinglass replied, “We have repeatedly asked the witnesses not to do that. And not just Mr. Cohen. All the witnesses.”

Ryan Boyajian, who along with fiancée Jennifer Pedranti appears on The Real Housewives of Orange County, is reportedly caught up in the $16 million gambling and theft scandal surrounding the former interpreter of Dodgers superstar Shohei Ohtani.
ESPN, citing multiple sources, reported that Boyajian is the bookmaker’s associate to whom interpreter Ippei Mizuhara wired money to pay his gambling debts.
Mizuhara today agreed to plead guilty to two federal charges related to the theft of nearly $17 million from the Dodger slugger’s bank account. Prosecutors say Mizuhara used that money to pay off illegal gambling debts.
Ippei Mizuhara, 39, could face more than 30 years in federal prison under the plea deal, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office.
Per ESPN, Mizuhara’s illegal bookmaker told the interpreter he could pay his gambling debts by wiring money to “Associate 1.” That, according to ESPN, is Boyajian.

Update: Stormy Daniels faced a contentious cross examination today over her claim that she had sex with Donald Trump in 2006 and that, five years later, a stranger threatened her in a Las Vegas parking lot to not talk about the sexual encounter publicly.
Susan Necheles, a lawyer for Trump, questioned Daniels’ motivations and tried to cast doubt on her story. She also highlighted the fact that Daniels owes more than $500,000 in legal fees from a failed defamation lawsuit against Trump.
Necheles argued that as far back as 2011, Daniels was alternately confirming or denying sex with Trump depending on whether she was being paid for her story.
A $130,000 payment to Daniels in 2016 from Trump’s lawyer, Michael Cohen, is the centerpiece of the Manhattan District Attorney’s case against Trump, for allegedly falsifying business records to conceal a reimbursement of the money to Cohen. Daniels, a key prosecution witness, spent more...

The Kathy Bates-led reboot of "Matlock" may not hit TV screens for a while longer, but in the meantime, fans of the much-loved legal drama can still catch old episodes of the original run, well, pretty much everywhere. "Matlock" aired for nine years, moving from NBC to ABC partway through its run and switching up its cast list throughout. Though several actors played more than one character throughout the series' run, only a handful appeared in more than 30 episodes of the series, most of them as Ben Matlock's legal associates. 2nd Update 1:56 Pm: Not for the first time, Donald Trump made someone cry today.

Finished talking to Assistant D.A. Prosecutors Play Recording Of Donald Trump And Michael Cohen Discussing Hush Money Payments — Update
Update: Jurors today heard a recording in which Donald Trump and his then-lawyer and “fixer,” Michael Cohen, discuss payments to Karen McDougal, the former Playboy model who claimed to have had an affair with The Apprentice host.
The recording was made by Cohen in September of 2016 — and first reported on by CNN in 2018. In it, Trump and Cohen discussed buying the rights to McDougal’s story.
“I need to open up a company for the transfer of all of that info regarding our friend David,” Cohen said, referring to David Pecker, then-ceo of American Media, the tabloid publisher that bought McDougal’s story for $150,000 with the intention of burying it.
When Cohen turned to the subject of “financing,” Trump asked, “What financing?”
“We’ll have to pay,” Cohen said. It wasn’t clear from the garbled audio at that point whether Trump agreed. Pecker, a prosecution witness last week, said...

Harvey Weinstein will be retried in New York on rape and sexual offence charges after his 23-year conviction was overturned on appeal, Manhattan District Attorney’s Office said on Wednesday.
The disgraced 72-year old former Hollywood titan appeared in court in a wheelchair wearing a blue suit and according to reports did not speak in a brief hearing. Reports said Attorney Gloria Allred and Weinstein accuser Jessica Mann attended the hearing.
Prosecutors said there was nothing consensual about Weinstein’s conduct in reference to prior charges that led to the original conviction in February 2020, and told Judge Curtis Farber they would be proceeding.

“Mr. Weinstein entered prison with serious medical issues, and they have not magically disappeared, but are being managed,” the producer’s long-time spokesperson Juda Engelmayer tells Deadline of his client who is suffering from diabetes, cardiac issued, sleep apnea, and who is also near blind.
Following the April 25 overturning of his 2020 sex crimes conviction, the past few days have seen a storm of rumors that 72-year-old Weinstein wouldn’t make the re-arraignment hearing in the early afternoon local time at 100 Centre Street in Manhattan. While Weinstein’s current condition is far from critical at present and he is under observation at Bellevue, one well-positioned law enforcement source said that “things could turn on a dime” and not to rule out “more drama.

Update: The lawyer for Karen McDougal and Stormy Daniels further outlined the hush money deals made to his clients, including his suspicion that Donald Trump was “the one” who ultimately funded the Daniels payoff.
Lawyer Keith Davidson said on Tuesday that he did not enjoy having to deal with Trump’s lawyer, Michael Cohen.
The tension went back to a hostile phone call in 2011 after a gossip site called TheDirty blogged about rumors of a sexual liaison between adult film star Daniels and Trump. “Before I could barely get my name out, I was met with a hostile barrage of insults and allegations,” Davidson testified in Trump’s hush-money trial in Manhattan.
Cohen was “just screaming,” Davidson said, and he accused Davidson’s clients, Daniels and her manager, Gina Rodriguez, of leaking the claim to TheDirty. “Finally, after he finished,” Davidson recalled, he assured Cohen that Daniels didn’t want the story publicized.

Harvey Weinstein has been hospitalized in New York City, days after the New York Court of Appeals overturned his 2020 rape conviction.
Attorney Arthur Aidala said Saturday that Weinstein was admitted to Bellevue Hospital in Manhattan for a battery of tests, according to the Associated Press.
“They examined him and sent him to Bellevue. It seems like he needs a lot of help, physically,” Aidala said. “He’s got a lot of problems. He’s getting all kinds of tests. He’s somewhat of a train wreck health wise.”
Frank Dwyer, a spokesperson with the New York City Department of Correction, said Weinstein remains in custody at Bellevue.
“Mr. Weinstein has a history of high blood pressure, heart issues, and a myriad of other health conditions. The trip from the Walsh Rmu to NYC triggered some of the health issues that warranted closer monitoring,” Juda Engelmayer, Weinstein’s spokesperson, told Variety in a statement.

Updated: After David Pecker finished his fourth day of testimony, the next prosecution witness in Donald Trump’s hush money trial Friday was Rhona Graff, Trump’s longtime assistant.
Graff was a Trump Organization employee who, while there, kept contacts for both Stormy Daniels and Karen McDougal in the company’s computer system. She testified today that she had a “vague recollection” of once seeing Daniels in an office reception area of Trump Tower, and “assumed” it was because Trump was considering her as a contestant on his Celebrity Apprentice reality TV show.
“He thought that she would be an interesting addition,” she testified, citing “office chatter” as the basis for her opinion. Graff said she was aware that Daniels was an adult film performer.
Graff worked for Trump for 34 years, rising from his executive assistant beginning in 1987 to senior vice president until her departure in 2021. She testified under subpoena on Friday,...

Chrisley Knows Best fans predicted a disappointing outcome for Savannah Chrisley with Todd and Julie Chrisley’s oral arguments appeal, but is all hope gone for them? After the appeal, in an update, Savannah seemed down, so curious USA Network fans wonder if the attorney, Alex Little prepared her for bad news.
Todd & Julie Chrisley’s Appeal Alleged Misconduct
Only a very small percentage of federal oral argument appeals are granted. So, in his filings, Alex Little must have had a good basis to get the opportunity in the appellate court. Most of the arguments labored the issues of alleged misconduct by the prosecution. Additionally, Little talked about an IRS witness who seemed to influence the jury by suggesting they never paid taxes. While some people feel that it was all “hearsay,” the fact is that what she said was entered into the court record. So, it is evidence.

When New York’s top court overturned Harvey Weinstein’s Manhattan-based sex crimes conviction in a surprise move Thursday, questions about Weinstein’s reversal of fortune and what comes next for the disgraced movie mogul started to multiply.
Will there be a new trial in New York? Could Weinstein be released on bail while that question plays out? Is Weinstein’s subsequent conviction in California in jeopardy now too?
A spokesperson for Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg quickly signaled Thursday that the office hoped to put Weinstein back in front of a jury.

Harvey Weinstein was already effectively serving a life sentence when he was flown to Los Angeles to face his second trial on rape and sexual assault charges.
That second conviction is now the only thing keeping him in prison, after the New York Court of Appeals overturned his original verdict in a 4-3 ruling on Thursday.
The court’s ruling could now be used to bolster the appeal in California, which, if successful, could set the former Hollywood producer free.
“At the time the jury was deciding the evidence in California, they were working under the assumption and the belief that he had properly been convicted in New York,” said Jennifer Bonjean, the attorney who is handling Weinstein’s California appeal. “Now we know that’s not true.”
The Los Angeles jury was informed of Weinstein’s earlier conviction during the trial, and it also came up during jury selection.

Donald Trump was back in court on Thursday for the seventh day of his criminal hush money trial. The court heard a third day of testimony from David Pecker — the former National Enquirer boss who used the publication to buoy Trump ahead of the 2016 election. While Pecker’s testimony earlier this week contained plenty of damning evidence, the former tabloid boss dropped an under-oath bombshell when he recalled that Trump complained to him that Stormy Daniels had breached the hush-money deal she’d made with Trump fixer Michael Cohen after...

It was thanks in part to Arnold Schwarzenegger that the former publisher of the National Enquirer knew he could get in trouble for the tabloid’s catch-and-kill policy and buying off salacious stories about Donald Trump.
Over objections from Trump’s defense team, ex-American Media CEO David Pecker poignantly Thursday told the judge, jurors, Trump himself and everyone else in a packed Manhattan courtroom he was aware he was violating election law in 2016 when he secretly bought Playboy playmate Karen McDougal’s story of an affair with Trump for $150,000. Admitting the purchase was entirely to kill the story, Pecker said that the primary purpose behind the payoff and others in a similar vein was to help the then-Celebrity Apprentice host’s presidential campaign.
Such tactics were nothing new for Pecker.

As Donald Trump sat through another day of damning testimony in his criminal hush-money trial, the Supreme Court heard oral arguments in his bid to establish widespread presidential immunity from criminal prosecution over “official” acts committed in office.
The case before the Supreme Court stems from Trump’s ongoing efforts to delay or dismiss the Justice Department’s case against him over his role in efforts to overturn the 2020 election and the Jan. 6 riot. The court’s decision will have profound implications on the criminal indictments currently on the former president’s rap sheet.

Update: National Enquirer Publisher David Pecker, on the witness stand today in Donald Trump’s hush money trial, detailed the tens of thousands of dollars the tabloid shelled out to “catch and kill” potentially embarrassing stories during the 2016 presidential election campaign.
Pecker, who counted Trump as a friend and an asset, told jurors of paying $30,000 to bury an “untrue” claim that The Apprentice host had fathered a child out of wedlock. Pecker made clear to jurors that the purpose of the payment was to protect Trump and his 2016 GOP presidential campaign from “potential embarrassment.”
With Trump looking on, the former CEO of National Enquirer parent company American Media (Ami), testified that in 2016 he bought exclusive rights to — and then killed — the story being shopped by a Trump Tower doorman in New York who claimed the real estate mogul had a child with his housekeeper. Pecker said that when he told Trump’s personal lawyer,...

John Sauer, a lawyer arguing Donald Trump’s presidential immunity case, generated significant controversy when he asserted, in response to a judge’s hypothetical, that a president could not be prosecuted if he were to order the assassination of a political rival — unless he were first impeached and convicted.
With that case now before the Supreme Court, Sauer is arguing that justices should not be concerned with “lurid hypotheticals” that “almost certainly never will occur, and would virtually certainly result in impeachment and Senate conviction … if they did occur.”

Donald Trump’s lawyer, Alina Habba, said that her client would be like the late South African President Nelson Mandela if he gets jailed for violating the gag order in his New York hush money trial.
On April 1, Judge Juan Merchan expanded a gag order in the case, thereby keeping Trump from constantly attacking his daughter, Loren Merchan.
Initially, the gag order blocked the former president from making public statements about witnesses, other prosecutors, court staff and their family members if they were “made with the intent to interfere with” this case materially.
In a court filing on April 16, the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office asked Judge Merchan to hold Trump in contempt for frequently using social media to disparage two of the witnesses in his hush money trial – ex-Trump lawyer Michael Cohen and former porn star Stormy Daniels.

For anyone who needed a refresher on The Jinx, the follow-up series to the 2015 true-crime phenomenon that led to the arrest of Robert Durst did just that with its first episode. Except it delved deeper — much deeper — when it took the audience behind the curtain of the murder case against Durst to show how and why the investigation and Durst’s subsequent arrest lined up with the jaw-dropping final episode, which would air audio of Durst now-famously confessing from inside a bathroom, “Killed them all, of course.”
The Jinx launched as a six-part miniseries in February 2015. Durst was a New York real estate heir who had been suspected of three murders, but never convicted: his first wife, Kathleen McCormack Durst, who disappeared in 1982; his close friend Susan Berman, who was shot dead execution-style in December 2000; and his neighbor Morris Black, whom he dismembered but was acquitted of murdering, claiming self-defense,...

John Eastman, formerly an attorney for Donald Trump, claimed he was dropped by two banks, Bank of America and Usaa, in several months due to his association with the former president and role in the January 6, 2021, Capitol riot.
So-called “de-banking” is a phenomenon in which financial institutions deny services to targets of political activism, usually conservatives.
These actions were taken amid intense backlash against his work advising Trump in the 2020 election, in which he promoted false claims of election rigging that lacked evidence and any legal basis.
Eastman claimed that he had shifted most of his banking activities to Usaa, a financial services provider dedicated exclusively to military veterans and their families, due to his dissatisfaction with Bank of America’s “wokeness.” Both institutions are federally insured, and Bank of America received billions of dollars in taxpayer funds during the global financial crisis.

He was acquitted for the 2001 murder of neighbor Morris Black, whom Durst admitted to dismembering, claiming he killed Black in self-defense.

O.J. Simpson’s longtime attorney, who was named executor of the former NFL star’s will ahead of his death last week, has said he will ensure that any claim the parents of Ron Goldman make to retrieve the millions they were awarded in a 1998 civil judgment against the accused killer will be accepted by the estate.
Attorney Malcolm Lavergne, who represented Simpson from 2009 until the former running back’s death on April 10 after a battle with prostate cancer, said that he wants to walk back statements made last week while speaking by phone with The Hollywood Reporter on Monday afternoon. Lavergne had previously told the Las Vegas Review-Journal that he’d fight to prevent a payout of the $33.5 million judgment awarded to the families of Simpson’s ex-wife, Nicole Brown Simpson, and her friend Ron Goldman; he said he specifically wanted Fred Goldman to receive “zero — nothing” of Simpson’s estate.

State prosecutors and Trump’s attorneys kicked things off by arguing over what evidence will be admissible during the proceedings, and it quickly became clear that the jury selection process might take quite a while.
