Lionsgate Television is teaming with Park Chan-wook to develop an English-language TV adaptation of Park’s iconic film “Oldboy.”
Park directed and co-wrote the original film, which was itself loosely based on the Japanese manga of the same name. He will produce the new series version along with his producing partner, Syd Lim. Executives Courtney Mock and Tara Joshi are overseeing the project for Lionsgate Television. Bryan Weiser negotiated the deal.
“Lionsgate Television shares my creative vision for bringing ‘Oldboy’ into the world of television,” said Park. “I look forward to working with a studio whose brand stands for bold, original and risk-taking storytelling.”
Originally released in 2003, “Oldboy” tells the story of a man who is kidnapped and held prisoner in a sealed hotel room for 15 years. He is suddenly released with no explanation, only to learn he has five days to discover why he was imprisoned or face the consequences.

Like most things in Hollywood, “Quiet on Set: The Dark Side of Kids TV” began with a promise.
After years of whispered complaints about the sometimes-shady world of children’s entertainment, an investigative team set out to expose Dan Schneider’s Nickelodeon and the years of alleged abuse endured by the kids who worked there from 1994 to 2018. Others had tried to tell this story, but this time serious journalists planned to expose the industry’s seamy underbelly — documenting past wrongs, giving voice to victims, and charting tangible change.
Ex-kid actors and “Quiet on Set” subjects Raquel Lee Bolleau and Alexa Nikolas told IndieWire they were presented with a plan for an honest look at the issues and suffering borne out by their childhoods. Lee Bolleau (“The Amanda Show”) talked to the “Quiet on Set” producers about her passion for healing and protecting young performers still in the industry; Nikolas (“Zoey...

The player sees himself as the “mob boss” of his six-person alliance, and despite some not enjoying his bold efforts to control the votes, he’s succeeded every time he’s taken the reins. In the early days of silent film, pioneers like Alice Guy-Blaché and Lois Weber were among the first women to call the shots as directors. They paved the way for the cinema we know and love now. Decades of sexism sidelined others from following in their footsteps, but today, women directors are continuing to defy the odds and make film history, tell incredible stories, and visualize the moments that stick with us long after the credits have rolled.
From documentaries to thrillers, there’s no genre women directors haven’t shaped in a major way. If you’re looking to watch more movies directed by women, Netflix has an entire collection of them just for you. Don’t know where to start? We’ve curated a list of 13 films — and a few extra recommendations for your queue — you can stream right now.

Heidi Gardner isn’t the only one laughing at the sight of Saturday Night Live’s Beavis and Butt-Head.
As of Wednesday afternoon, the sketch has racked up nearly 8.8 million views on YouTube. That number makes it one of only three clips this season to break eight million views on YouTube, sandwiched in between “Washington’s Dream” (8.3 million), and “I’m Just Pete” (13.2 million).
It’s a feat made all the more impressive by the fact that it’s only been four days since the clip was posted.
Starring Mikey Day and Ryan Gosling as two unsuspecting strangers who just happen to bear an uncanny resemblance to the ‘90s MTV cartoon duo, the sketch has grabbed a ton of attention online, in part because of the sheer number of performers who break during the sketch, including a rare break by Gardner.

It takes a lot of confidence and courage to wager a “True Daily Double” on Jeopardy! Whether it goes right or wrong for the contestant at hand, that outcome will almost certainly change the game. Unfortunately, for one of Wednesday night’s contestants, it was for the worse. The contestants of the April 17–– episode were Alison Betts — a four-time champion who walked onto the stage with $107,700 in cash winnings under her belt — along with attorney Jeff Plate and business executive Vidya Ravella. The first round proved it was truly anybody’s game, even if Betts had the edge with the intimidation factor of being on a hot streak. After getting one-third of her answers wrong, she still led the pack with $3,600. Both Plate and Ravella were just behind her, though, and with much better statistics to boot: Plate got six right and one wrong, while Ravella got eight right and two incorrect answers.

“In-home antennas are the fastest-growing way Americans are accessing television today,” according to CivicScience. However, the group that has led the push are millennials — those between ages 25-44.
The research company found that nearly one-third of U.S. adults have a digital or traditional TV antenna, which allows a household to receive signals from local broadcast stations for free. Of that general population, 17 percent use their digital antenna often — the other 13 percent, not so much. Additionally, 15 percent of the respondents to CivicScience’s survey who do not own a digital antenna are interested in getting one.
While Americans aged 45-54 — let’s call them young Gen X-ers — are the biggest over-the-air users (23 percent use an antenna), millennials (25-44) tie the 45-to-54-year-olds as the group most likely to own an antenna. Both are at 35 percent.
Gen Z is the most interested in converting (17 percent) to an antenna; adults 55+ are the least interested.

The mission of Our Living Worldis as ambitious as it is hard to pin down: to capture the living network that connects everything on Earth, including what we can’t see with the naked eye.
This miraculous, largely untold story hides behind every animal and ecosystem. From the Emmy Award-winning team that produced 2022’s Our Great National Parks, the four-episode docuseries reveals the secrets of the planet’s most powerful force — life itself. It’s also about how that planetary life support system –– spanning continents and oceans, fueled by wind, water, fire and the sun and moon –– is imperiled by the unprecedented speed of change to the Earth from human activity.
But hope, as Our Living World shows us, is hardly lost. This is a survival story, illuminating how our living network relies on all creatures great and small to beat the most treacherous odds and survive another day. Here...

Concerned about high recidivism rates and the dismal conditions of the jails in the community he’d spent his career serving, Arkansas sheriff Eric Higgins had a bold idea: to transform incarceration at Pulaski County Regional Detention Facility in Little Rock, Arkansas, via a social experiment that would offer the men within its walls a true alternative. The process is documented in Unlocked: A Jail Experiment, an eight-episode exploration of what happens when unit cells are unlocked for six weeks, and detainees create community and structure for themselves. The goal was to determine if more autonomy and less control in jails can lead to a more community-oriented living environment and better support one of the fundamental purposes of incarceration: discouraging people from committing future crimes.
“Pulaski County Regional Detention center is a direct supervision facility, which means the deputies are inside the unit with detainees,” Sheriff Higgins tells Tudum. The...

Leslie Moonves, the former CEO of CBS, was fined $15,000 on Wednesday by the L.A. City Ethics Commission for obtaining secret information in 2017 about an LAPD sex assault investigation of which he was the target.
The commission voted 4-0 to approve the penalty, which is the maximum allowed for ethics violations under the L.A. City Charter. The vote came two months after the commission rejected a $11,250 fine, finding it did not match the egregious nature of the violation.
The case, which reminded some observers of the police corruption depicted in “L.A. Confidential,” centered on Cory Palka, the retired commander of the Hollywood division.

In 1997, the murder of 14-year-old Reena Virk by a fellow group of British Columbia teens sparked a media frenzy, and the ensuing scrutiny shed a spotlight on the problem of bullying and violence among girls. But Hulu’s new true-crime series Under the Bridge, inspired by Rebecca Godfrey’s 2005 nonfiction book, digs deeper into the complex realities behind the sensational Canadian killing and the media blindspots about race, class, xenophobia, and poverty that underpinned it. “It’s a more feminine and sensitive take on a crime story that reckons with the trauma of childhood,” says creator Quinn Shephard during a recent Zoom interview, alongside showrunner Samir Mehta. “It’s about understanding how and why violence like this occurs in youth and what steps we need to take to break those cycles.” The drama, which stars Killers of the Flower Moon Oscar nominee Lily Gladstone and Daisy Jones & The Six’s Riley Keough,...

“Billy Joel: The 100th — Live at Madison Square Garden” reached 5.7 million viewers on Sunday night.
Calculated from Nielsen’s measurement of linear viewers on CBS and live streaming via Paramount+, this makes the Joel concert the fourth-most-watched special of 2024, ranking only behind the Oscars (19.5 million viewers on ABC), the Grammys (16.9 million viewers on CBS) and the Golden Globes (9.4 million viewers on CBS). It outpaced shows like the Emmys, which Fox aired to 4.3 million viewers in January.
This tally also puts “The 100th” above several musical holiday specials that aired at the end of 2023, which are a consistent ratings-bringer for broadcast networks.

Paige DeSorbo, Kyle Cooke, and Danielle Olivera have a quality catch-up session while out on the town, but the conversation gets serious very quickly in TV Insider’s exclusive sneak peek of the April 18 episode of Summer House. “I will say, this summer has been a little bit of a breath of fresh air,” Kyle tells Paige and Danielle. “I feel like the vibes are in a good place. I’m not gonna lie, I would love for Craig [Conover] to be up here more often.” “Me too. I love him. He’s my friend,” Paige says. Paige’s mention of Craig as her “friend” instead of longtime “boyfriend” has Danielle chiming in, “Just your friend?” Paige replies, “Obviously, I love him, but I think of him, like, as my best friend.” Kyle admits that he “picked up on a little uncertainty” about Paige and Craig’s future when the Southern Charm...

It wasn’t immediately clear what provoked it, but former President Trump lashed out (again) at Jimmy Kimmel Wednesday, apparently conflating the late-night host with… Al Pacino?
Trump began his Wednesday morning screed with a mammoth run-on sentence that wrongly stated that ratings for this year’s Kimmel-hosted Academy Awards were down (they wern’t), and that Kimmel had announced this year’s Best Picture winner (he didnt).
Kimmel tweeted out his own response a few hours later, saying simply, “in fairness to our former President, many stable geniuses confuse me with Al Pacino…”
Trump, who’s currently in New York City for jury selection in the first of several criminal trials being brought against him, appears to still be seething over Kimmel’s joke that preceded Al Pacino’s presentation of Best Picture at this year’s Oscars.
With the show unexpectedly running short, Kimmel decided to read a...

“The finale ends crazy. I know last year was crazy,” Fire Country star, creator, and executive producer Max Thieriot says. Season 1 ended with it looking like Bode (Thieriot) would be getting his freedom, only for him to shock his friends and family at his parole hearing by taking responsibility for drugs at Three Rock. He wasn’t back in prison long, though, and was back at Three Rock by the end of the Season 2 premiere. Now, starting with Season 2 Episode 8, “we really start building this arc for a lot of these characters to where they end up landing in Episode 10. And so I think it’s really fun to be able to follow that from [Episodes] 8, 9, and 10 and sort of try and predict where things are going to end up,” Thieriot tells TV Insider. “Because I think maybe some people will guess some things, but there’s certainly things that people are not going to guess.

[Warning: The following contains Major spoilers for Shōgun Season 1 Episode 9, “Crimson Sky.”] Lady Mariko is an undeniable fan-favorite character from FX‘s wondrous Shōgun. Played with unending power by Anna Sawai, the honorable and loyal Mariko is fiercely committed to Lord Toranaga (Hiroyuki Sanada), a loyalty and respect that produces admiration, as well as confusion, in her English paramour, John Blackthorne (Cosmo Jarvis). While Mariko has pledged undying fealty to her lord, she’s been trying to commit seppuku (suicide) since her family was put to death in similar fashion — a request that goes denied every year by her abusive husband, Buntaro (Shinnosuke Abe). To help Toranaga’s cause, Mariko was seconds away from committing seppuku in Shōgun‘s Episode 9, the penultimate episode of the limited series. Blackthorne stepped up to be her second after begging her to stay alive for him. It was his ultimate show of respect, a sign that he finally understood what this...
