Poll: Alex Toth — Cartoonist and Animation Designer
Alex Toth (1928 – 2006) was a maverick American cartoonist active from the 1940s through the 1980s. Toth worked for American comic book publishers in the 1940's and 1950s, but is better known for his animation designs for a number of Hanna-Barbera animated series in the 1960s and 1970s. His living legacy is the resurrection of Toth-designed series on Adult Swim and the number of younger animators who cite him as an influence.
Journalist Tom Spurgeon, eulogizing Toth saying he possessed "an almost transcendent understanding of the power of art as a visual story component". Further, he called him "one of the handful of people who could seriously enter into Greatest Comic Book Artist of All-Time discussions" and be in the conversation as "a giant of 20th-century cartoon design" too. He was inducted into the Jack Kirby Hall of Fame in 1990.
