December 5th is Repeal Day in the US. It celebrates the repeal of the 18th Amendment, which had outlawed the use of alcoholic products. While "speakeasies" - illegal bars serving alcohol brought in from Canada - popped up all over the place, leading to rampant crime. Now the masses could again enjoy "a cold one" any time any where.
