Hans Werner Henze was born on 1 July 1926 in Gütersloh, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. He was a composer and writer, known for The Exorcist (1973), Love Unto Death (1984) and Der junge Lord (1969). He died on 27 October 2012 in Dresden, Germany.- Fredrich von Paulus was born in Germany in 1890 and joined the military academy in Berlin when he was around 18. He rose through the ranks from private to officer within 20 years. When World War II broke out in 1939, he was a member of the German general staff, a position he held during the 1940 invasion of France. In September 1940 he was appointed Quartermaster General of the General Staff. In 1942 he was promoted to Colonel-General and given command of the German 6th Army for the summer drive in the south of Russia, which started in June. Von Paulus was an experienced and capable staff officer, but only an average field commander who was intimidated by his superiors, and who fatally underestimated the Russian strength at Stalingrad, where his men were drawn into savage and costly street fighting by defending Russian troops. On November 19, 1942, the Soviets began a counteroffensive aimed at recapturing Stalingrad and trapping the 6th Army--about 270,000 strong--within the city. Von Paulus followed orders to stay put rather than to break out of the encirclement. For over two months he and his men were forced further and further back into the city by the rapidly increasing numbers of Soviet troops, while their supply lines were slowly being cut off, resulting in severe shortages of everything from food to clothes to ammunition. During the siege Adolf Hitler promoted von Paulus to General and announced that he was awarding him the Iron Cross for his stubborn defense. He also ordered von Paulus to fight to the last man and not to surrender one German soldier or piece of equipment to the Russians. On January 30, 1943, with the imminent defeat of the 6th Army at hand, Hitler promoted von Paulus to Field Marshal, stating that no German commander of that rank had ever surrendered. However, the very next day von Paulus surrendered the remnants of the once powerful 6th Army, now reduced to demoralized, starving, freezing, ill and half-clothed soldiers, to the Russians. He spent the remainder of the war under house arrest near Moscow while his men were marched off to harsh Soviet POW camps, from which only a very few survived. After the war ended von Paulus remained for a few years as a prisoner in the USSR until his release in 1947. Prior to his release he was brought to Germany to testify in the Nuremberg war crimes tribunal, and gave testimony against many of the Nazi officials on trial there. After his release from Russian custody von Paulus, by now sympathetic to communism, retired to East Germany, where he died in 1957.

Lilo died on 4 April 2010 in Dresden, Saxony, Germany.- Lili Elbe was a Danish artist and writer who was assigned male at birth, experienced what is now called gender dysphoria, and underwent the world's first documented sex reassignment surgery. Born as Einar Wegener studied art at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen and met Gerda Gottlieb there. The two fell in love and got married about 1905. Wegener realized his true gender identity when Gerda, a successful painter and fashion illustrator, asked him to don women's clothing and sit as her model. The couple eventually moved to Paris, where Wegener felt free to appear in public sometimes as Einar Wegener and sometimes as Lili Elbe. The first of five highly experimental surgeries that Elbe underwent was performed in 1930. She died of complications not long after the fifth procedure in 1931. During her last year she published her autobiography "From Man to Woman: Lili Elbe's Confessions" under her pen-name Lili Elvenes. Einar Wegener/Lili Elbe's and Gerda Wegener's life was dramatized by David Ebershoff in his novel "The Danish Girl" published in 2000. The book was filmed by Tom Hooper in 2015 featuring Eddie Redmayne and Alicia Vikander as the Wegener couple.

- Due to her father's professional transfer, the family soon moved to Berlin, where Ardenne attended high school. In 1923 he left school early to train as a precision mechanic. The 16-year-old was extremely technically gifted and had already acquired his first patent, which enabled the development of the Loewe triple tube and the modernization of broadcasting. Ardenne soon gave up studying physics, chemistry and mathematics in Berlin in 1925 in order to continue his self-taught studies. In 1928 Ardenne founded a laboratory for electron physics in Berlin, which he directed until 1945. Here he made numerous inventions, such as a fluorescent screen scanner, which, among other things, had a lasting influence on the development of radio and television.
At the Berlin Radio Exhibition in 1931, Ardenne was the first German to present a television set he had developed, after TV technology had first been publicly presented by the British John Logie Baird in 1926. In 1937 he built the first scanning electron microscope. In 1938, Ardenne married his second wife, Bettina Bergengruen, with whom he had four children. After the outbreak of war in 1939, Ardenne participated in the research and application of radar technology as part of the National Socialist armaments policy. He received the Leibniz Medal in 1941 for his services to the fascist war machine. In the immediate post-war period, Ardenne initially transferred to Soviet service, where he developed a process for industrial uranium extraction for the construction of the Soviet atomic bomb. For this, the researcher received the USSR Stalin Prize in 1953. In 1955 Ardenne was able to return to Germany, i.e. to the German Democratic Republic (GDR), where he founded his own institute named after him in Dresden.
In addition, there was the chair for electrical engineering problems in nuclear physics at the TU Dresden. In the decades that followed, the physicist, who was never a member of the SED, was able to continue his research there with generous support from the GDR authorities. In 1958 Ardenne was awarded the GDR First Class National Prize. In addition to electron and nuclear physics, medical research was the main focus of his work from the mid-1960s. Here he developed new therapeutic procedures against aging and cancer, which, however, received no recognition from conventional medicine. After German unification in 1990, much of Ardenne's institute fell victim to government cuts. The physical research program was continued by "Von Ardenne Anlagentechnik GmbH". In the following years, the researcher also worked as the head of a cancer clinic.
Manfred von Ardenne died on May 26, 1997 in Dresden.
