Harold John Russell was born in Nova Scotia in 1914. His family moved to Cambridge Massachusetts when his father died in 1919. He was training paratroopers at Camp MacKall NC on June 6, 1944 when some TNT he was using exploded in his hands. He lost both hands. After receiving hooks, and training on them, he was chosen to make an Army training film called "Diary Of A Sergeant". William Wyler saw the film and decided to cast him in The Best Years of Our Lives (1946). Harold Russell played Homer Parish. For this role he received 2 Oscars, a Best Supporting and one for being an inspiration to all returning veterans. He is the only actor to receive 2 Oscars for the same role. After the movie he attended Boston University. He later went on to help establish AMVETS as a viable alternative to the American Legion for veterans, though his dream of an international veterans organization was never realized. He later appeared in Inside Moves (1980) and Dogtown (1997). He lived with his wife on Cape Cod in Massachusetts. George Allan Borgman is an actor and journalist for several jazz publications.
Borgman was the only child of Herman Francis and Martha Vivien (Wecker) Borgman. He grew up in St. Louis and attended Indiana University Bloomington he studied journalism and received a masters degree in musicology.
In the 1950s Borgman, who played saxophone and clarinet played with such territorial big bands as Jack Everett's Dance Orchestra, Jack Stalcup Orchestra and Larry Tice. He also did a stint as a high school music teacher. After he got married and started a family he rejoined the U. S. Army in order to make ends meet.
It was only after his retirement from the army in the early 1980s that he began to write full time as a journalist for newspapers and as a jazz writer concentrating mostly on traditional jazz and ragtime although he has also written on big bands, bebop and modern jazz. He claims that his military experience in conducting interrogations has helped him in interviewing musicians.
He has written for several jazz magazines, newspapers and journals including the IAJRC Journal, Cadence Magazine, Joslin's Jazz Journal, T-J Today for which he was the New England correspondent, a writer and reviewer and has written a monthly column called "The Yankee Jazz Beat" since 1991 for The Mississippi Rag where he is the New England correspondent and also a contributing editor.
He has written over 200 reviews, in-depth articles on the history of jazz and on numerous jazz musicians including Tommy Benford, Joseph F. Lamb and interviewed such artists as Ruby Braff, Al Casey, Buzzy Drootin, and Spiegle Willcox who played with Bix Beiderbecke.
In the late 1990s he was voted in the top ten of jazz critics by the public in a Jazz Beat Magazine poll. He is a member of the Jazz Journalists Association and has written liner notes for Stomp Off Records, various jazz recording artists including Neville Dickie, Stan McDonald and The Happy Feet Dance Orchestra. He has also done writing for the annual Hot Steamed Jazz Festival in the United States.
His extensive writings and original research has been used as sources for a jazz encyclopedia and other works.
He has two sons including actor and filmmaker Eric Bruno Borgman and has a substantial role in his sons feature comedy film The Man in the Movie.- Milt Schmidt is a Canadian professional ice hockey center, coach and general manager, mostly for the Boston Bruins of the National Hockey League (NHL), where he was a member of the Kraut Line. He was elected to the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1961. In 2017 Schmidt was named one of the '100 Greatest NHL Players' in history.
Schmidt and his childhood friends Bobby Bauer and Woody Dumart were teamed up together in the NHL as well. They formed the Kraut Line, and were a strong and dependable line for the Bruins for most of the following fifteen seasons. They were a key ingredient to the Bruins' success as they rampaged to the regular season title and a hard-fought Stanley Cup victory in 1939. The following season Schmidt became a star, as he led the league in scoring and guided the Bruins to another first-place finish and the third-most goals in team history. The 1941 season saw Schmidt spearhead the Bruins to their second Cup win in three years. Named captain in 1951, Schmidt won the Hart Trophy as the league's most valuable player that year. He retired as a player partway through the 1954-1955 season to take over head coaching duties. - Doria Folliott was born in 1906 in England, UK.
