Wheeler, the newly-restored leader of the gang, believed Larkin was getting too close to Wheeler's girl (Gina Nelson), who is also a member of the gang. The tension between Wheeler and Gina is palpable. And there is dissension among the other gang members when Wheeler brings back the former way of dividing the take, under which he gets the lion's share. One of the other gang members, Doug Starrett, is outspoken in his belief that they've been doing all the work since he's been away and done well so they deserve a greater share. Wheeler doesn't agree.

But it is all subterfuge and Kemper tricks Wayburn and bolts. Wayburn tracks him down and shoots him dead (after the other shoots first) and takes the loot Kemper had stolen and was on his person at the time of the shooting. Wayburn disposes of the body (although the audience is not shown how or where). Roxie asks Barnaby to find Kemper or she'll have to forfeit the bond. She does not blame Wayburn and is quite solicitous of him. Wayburn tries to fence the loot but Sven Rolly, Kemper's former partner in crime, whom he also cheated, wants his share.
- A basketball team's owner learns his star player once threw a game. The player's shady brother-in-law (ironically, a used car salesman) has committed to a dangerous gangster that he has the player "in his pocket" and threatens to contact the commissioner if the owner does not go along with his scheme. In a physical confrontation, the much larger owner accidentally kills the other man, and the owner hides the body while directing his mentally challenged aide to dispose of the dead man's car after making up an excuse. Barnaby is hired by the now deceased man's wife -- who is the sister of the player who threw the game -- to try to locate her husband.

Around the same time, a friend and associate inside the conman-now turned murderer's new milieu catches him in a lie, begins questioning the behavior of "Kohlmeyer" and becomes a bit too inquisitive for his own good.
