Shankar, played by Danny, is a small-time crook who is given number one by gang leader (Kader Khan), though his accomplice No. 7, who uses him and gets him embroiled in a false murder. Shankar who deeply loves his wife Nanda (Deepti Naval) and daughter Meena (Mandakini), is devastated when he finds out that his newborn son has an incurable fever; he rushes to Dr. S. Malhotra (Suresh Oberio), who refuses to treat his son out of turn--and the baby dies. Full of vengeance, Shankar abducts the doctor's son Shoorveer and hands him to Iqbal to maim and make a beggar. Iqbal is saved in epilepsy by Shoorveer, who then brings him up as his own son. Meanwhile Shankar is caught by the police and imprisoned and his daughter and wife, by strange turn of events, are employed by Dr. Malhotra who, moved by their love and care, takes care of them. Shoorveer saves the life of the doctor's adopted daughter Meena, and both develop a teenage affection; they're then separated and then meet again in youth when Shoorveer is part of a gypsy entourage who love him. Nanda and Dr. Malhotra do not like their relationship, and Meena is being pursued by Rakesh Bedi who is Kader Khan's son. The story revolves around how Danny hungers for his family, Dr. Malhotra's pain to meet his long lost son, his love for his adopted daughter Meena, and the love of Meena and Shoorveer.
- Naive, illiterate Bhola Nath lives in a small village in India, which has yet to receive electricity. Bhola is helpful to everyone around him, and even speaks out against the local politician, Chatriprasad. Perturbed by this, Chatriprasad first accedes to all of Bhola's demands, and then asks him to re-locate to Bombay, and find employment with a former villager named Jagganath Tripathi, to which Bhola agrees. Upon arrival, Bhola is welcomed by Jagganath, and is even hired to escort young women to meet with their brothers. Bhola enthusiastically takes on this opportunity and works diligently to earn the respect of everyone around him. During the course of his duties, he meets with a beautiful woman named Roopali, and it is then slowly it dawns on Bhola about the true nature of his duties - that a pimp. But will this realization be enough for Bhola to reverse the regression in order to redeem himself?
- Mangal Singh (Rajesh Khanna) has been a career criminal, whose criminal career began to steal food and to keep from starving, and thence got him in deeper and deeper in the criminal world. His crimes have caught up with him and he is sentenced to be hanged. He dramatically escapes with the help of underworld don, Suraj (Pinchoo Kapoor), and is on the run from the police. He lands up in a small village in Northern India, and becomes a school-teacher with the help of local restauranteur, Bijli (Mumtaz). He takes on the identity of Ramu, a friend of Shravan, and goes to live with Shravan's parents, Lalaji (Om Prakash) and Malti (Nirupa Roy), little knowing that they are the parents of a man he killed while escaping from the police.
