- Roy's wife Ellen is hospitalized and it appears that her condition may be more serious than first thought. Roy and Dean are given the job of checking up on illegally operating taxi drivers and discover that a driver has a stolen video recorder in his boot. Jaz is investigating the brutal attack on an Asian youth and it becomes clear that Roy is implicated in the assault. Natalie organizes a night out to celebrate her becoming a sergeant but Mel changes her mind about attending and catches a flight to a Spanish resort. While collecting things from home to take to his hospitalized wife Roy is confronted by a group of Asian men looking for revenge for the attack on Saheed Ifraz.
- Teenage addict Debbie Sharpe suffers a fatal overdose and Sergeant Giffin resolves to bring in Terry Reynolds, the man who supplied the drugs,despite not having authorization from his superiors.A quantity of heroin is found at Reynolds' home after a raid but there is frustration when his solicitor manages to get him bailed. Meanwhile Dean goes to the aid of a blind man who is being harassed by a group of youths and manages to catch one of them in the act. Mike and Natalie are called to deal with a shoplifter who has stolen a Spice Girls doll as a present for his daughter.When the man becomes emotional, Mike drives him to his daughter's home and explains to his estranged wife what has happened. She agrees to let him come in and see his daughter but as Mike accompanies him the little girl realizes that her father has done something wrong. Upon leaving the house the man asks Mike if he is married. Mike tells him that he has just split up but that there are no children involved. The man informs him that he is lucky.
- Mel is called out to deal with a complaint from a woman who has some anti-social neighbours. She then learns that a member of this problem family is a convicted sex-offender who is seeing a fourteen-year-old girl.
- Mike Reynolds becomes annoyed with over-zealous rookie PC Kennett and handcuffs her to some railings.She however doesn't see the funny side especially when two lads come along and begin making fun of her and take her baton. Natalie is called to deal with ex-inspector Frank Northam who has had his wallet stolen by a stripper, but Northam is unhappy about a female officer dealing with the problem and when Sergeant Giffin arrives he head butts him.When an emotional PC Kennett complains to Sergeant Giffin about the prank he accidentally touches her chest while replacing her radio and she falsely accuses him of sexual assault. An affronted Giffin is happy to go and see Maggie Hayes about the accusation but then Kennett backs down. However,when she later learns that he has only given the guys a ticking off for the handcuff prank she again falsely accuses him of assault. Sergeant Giffin tells Chief Inspector Newland that he is happy for an external investigation rather than an in-house one to be undertaken confident in the belief that he will be exonerated.
- PC Kennetts allegation of sexual assault against Sergeant Giffen comes under scrutiny from investigating officers and causes her to divulge the details of the handcuffing prank that led her to be angered with her fellow officers before she made the allegations. Mel and Dean are on the trail of a flasher.Mike becomes increasingly annoyed with the people he is looking after in custody and when one man soils himself he suddenly barges into the room where Dean is being questioned by the investigators about the handcuff prank and announces that he is the guilty party and that he is leaving the force. Roy's investigation of drug pushing causes him to cross swords with a truculent and disrespectful youth and in revenge he tells a friend that he is the flasher who exposed himself to his daughter.
- Mel is caught on the hop when she is already present at Terry Reynolds' home as it is being vandalised when the police response arrives. She then learns that her boyfriend Darrell has taken information that she gave him and twisted it in order to provoke anger against Reynolds and lead to action being taken to improve the situation on the Skeetesmore. Sharon Reynolds is raped by two of the Caffrey brothers but she is reluctant to co-operate with the police.Mel confronts Darrell over his actions and breaks off their relationship.
- Natalie wakes up next to Sergeant Giffin after the cops' boozy night out and quickly leaves, minus her shoes. New arrival John is introduced to policing Roy Bramhall-style when he witnesses him deliberately smash the tail-light of a man and issue him with a penalty notice. New recruit Karen is shown the ropes by Natalie. Finding young tear-away Davvo at the scene of a theft, the cops immediately handcuff him but the victim of the theft informs them that Davvo is working for him on a burger stand and also lives with him. Dealing with the case of a pregnant teenage runaway Natalie allows herself to become too emotionally involved.
- Dean goes to the train station with his brother to see him off but the pair are viciously attacked and his brother is very seriously injured. Roy teams up with Jaz to find the perpetrators but the men who they apprehend are not in fact the ones who committed the crime. While interviewing a man who has a stolen car radio in his home John allows his homophobic attitudes to get in the way which angers new recruit Karen,who also bats for the other side. She then loses her cool while trying to put troublesome youngster Pat Sharpe in the back of the police van and becomes emotional. A sympathetic Natalie embraces her but she then begins to wonder whether she is becoming attracted to her.
- Mel and Roy are called to the house of notorious drug dealers the Caffreys after an assault is committed there and it soon becomes clear that there is a split in the family. At the scene of a burglary of the home of a young woman, John is confronted by Kieron Caffrey, the woman's boyfriend, who tells him that he can leave and forget about it. While driving Maggie Hayes to a meeting, Sergeant Giffin suddenly stops the car and handcuffs and arrests a criminal he is familiar with.When a gun is found in his car Giffin is vindicated, but Maggie is angry with him, claiming he has endangered her safety. Giffin and Wakefield join forces to get Kieron Caffrey to spill the beans about his father's drug dealing activities.
- Drug addict Carly-the girlfriend of Kieron Caffrey-is questioned about who is supplying her habit. As a claustrophobic she finds the experience very stressful and Kieron agrees to give information about his father's drug dealing on condition that she is released from custody. After her release, Roy is told to go round to her flat to retrieve information about drug dealing left there by Kieron. Unable to gain access he radios for Dean to come round and climb through an open window. Eventually PC Maguire climbs through the window but there is a shock in store when they discover that Carly has hanged herself. Cynically, Sergeant Giffin withholds the death from Kieron so that he will continue giving them the information they need to arrest Frank Caffrey. When Carly's father is informed of his daughter's death he goes to see Chief Inspector Newland and admonishes him for the nature of Carly's arrest and the fact that she was strip-searched and threatens to go to the press and try and finish his career. After Frank Caffrey is arrested Kieron leaves the station but is called back by Sergeant Giffin who tells him that Carly is dead. Kieron tells him that he has already been informed and expresses disgust that he withheld the information from him in order to get more information.
- PC Jellicoe is on the warpath with William Peter, the boyfriend of his estranged wife and enlists Dean's help in his campaign of harassment. Roy is called to help with an eviction and finds that the tenant is the sister of his dead wife's first husband. She then asks him to warn off her daughter's ex-boyfriend, who is apparently harassing her. A disturbed young woman brandishing a knife at a block of flats causes problems for the cops and Dean is reluctant to go after her when she hides in some undergrowth. Mel and John stake out a caravan site and then go in pursuit of the thieves when they strike. During the pursuit Colin overturns a police van which contains William Peter whom he had had bundled into the back without good reason. Mentally disturbed Shona stabs a supposed love rival in the chest and Mel bravely wrestles the knife from her,while an out-of-sorts Roy simply looks on impassively.
- Shona is in custody but her mental instability makes her a very difficult subject to interview. Everyone in the station apart from Mel seems to want to get shot of her as quickly as possible. Mel's bravery in disarming her leads to the press wanting to interview her and talk of a commendation. Colin's harassment of his wife's boyfriend causes her to burn his belongings. Katie Brydon offers to give Roy a photo album containing pictures of his children's biological father but Roy is not happy and refuses it.After work Mel goes to a pub where she knows Roy is to discuss Shona and his recent out-of-character behaviour. Roy tells her that he is grieving for his dead wife and that she has become too emotionally involved with the troubled Shona. Mel surmises that he thinks she is in the wrong job and she seems to concede that he may be right. She then drives off and the impression is given that she may well decide to resign from the force.
- Inspector Jean Darblay is assigned to Hartley, Lancashire. Initially facing scepticism from sergeants Joe Beck and George Parrish, she gradually earns their respect and admiration as their new female boss at the police station.
- Maggie Forbes, just promoted to Detective Inspector in the Metropolitan Police, reaches a crossroads in her life. Within hours of her promotion her police constable husband is shot by two brothers. Maggie is ordered to stay at home while her colleagues investigate the killing.
- This is a police drama series that depicts the working lives of a group of policemen in the fictitious Northern town of Stanton. The filming is done in a fly-on-the-wall, documentary style which conveys great realism and makes mundane situations into tense drama.
