- CHASING COLOR opens in the mines of Mogok, Myanmar, showing the arduous, dangerous work necessary to bring the famed rubies, spinels, and sapphires of the area to the surface. The juxtaposition of the stunning gilded chedis and temple interiors against the raw mining areas from which the gemstones emerge provide a poignant glimpse into the everyday life of its inhabitants while showcasing the richness of the area's cultural heritage. Yvonne Jiew, the film's protagonist, enters, explaining the uniqueness of Mogok as compared to the rest of Myanmar. Mogok's role in the gem trade has been impacted by decades of isolation from western influence. As a result, until recently many residents of Rubyland had never seen a foreigner. Since the country reopened for trade, both Chinese buyers and colored stone dealers from around the world have become more common, changing the worldview of the city's inhabitants. Because of the array of precious gems found here, Mogok is a place where even poor people become millionaires in just one day - but not without great personal risk for themselves and their families. The scene segues to the Mogok markets, where Yvonne is negotiating fiercely with traders there. She explains the importance of having a partner that can not only translate, but also understands the social and political climate of the area and serves as a middle man. Yvonne explains that she is a middle market sourcer - providing high-quality stones for contemporary custom pieces. As the buying process unfolds, it becomes clear that barter is a quintessential part of the way business is done. With each transaction, the negotiation process begins anew. While competition for Mogok's resources has increased as more buyers have emerged in the area, being a woman is a positive for Yvonne, because people tend to view her as less of a threat. Combined with her pronounced Australian accent, Chinese descent, and US residency, she becomes a source intrigue, making it easier to approach dealers. Yvonne outlines the criteria used to evaluate each stone. The first focus when buying is intense, vibrant color - it has to look like a sweet. Washed out, pale stones are quickly passed over in the selection process. The second most important element is the cut quality of the stone. Well-cut stones sell better, but half the stones purchased in Mogok must be recut before they are ready for resale. Next, she looks at inclusions. Yvonne explains that while some may see an inclusion as a detractor from the stone beauty, she sees them as a birthmark - a signifiers that the stone is natural. As Yvonne wraps up the days transactions, her translator, Govund, reveals the dangerous side of life in Mogok by reminding her how treacherous travel from the east to the west side of the city can be after dark, due to the highway bandits that frequently rob unwary travelers in the night. It is a potent reminder that the life of a gem sourcer is not without its perils. Just as Yvonne's frustration hits its peak due to recent price increases that have impacted her ability to acquire quality gemstones, her luck changes. Suddenly, a breathtakingly beautiful unheated 50 carat ruby emerges, and the day's dealings are salvaged before Yvonne and Govund make their way back to their accommodations for the evening. Yvonne wraps up the trip to Myanmar with a brief interview explaining how her role in this industry has impacted her view of the world at large. What was essentially strictly an exchange of monety for goods has evolved into a deep appreciation and respect for the people with whom she deals everyday. Yvonne compares small-scale miners to farmers growing crops and trying to live off the land. The trader with the large ruby reemerges for an interview supporting her description. In a heartrending twist, the dealer explains that before he became a merchant he was a miner, vividly outlining the dangers of the occupation...that you are literally risking your life to bring these precious gems to the surface. Tunnels collapse, dynamite behaves unpredictably - the life of a miner is fraught with danger. Yvonne explains the role she feels that buyers must take on to help artisanal miners, the responsibility of improving safety by increasing education. By patronizing small-scale miners directly and paying them fairly for their goods, they are given an opportunity to invest in better, safer equipment and thus working conditions at the mines. Yvonne arrives in Bangkok, Thailand, a critical part of the buying trip as the gems she has purchased are inspected by a gemological laboratory here to assure their integrity. Yvonne meets with Dr. Peretti at GIS, the most renowned colored stone lab in the country. In a startling revelation, the conversation segues to the amber mining areas in Kachin state, Myanmar. The amber discovered in this region holds the key to one of the most important gem-related scientific discoveries in the world - a modern day Jurassic park. The amber is important because it contains intact organisms from millions of years ago, allowing scientists a tangible glimpse into prehistory. Sadly the value of the amber has fueled tumultuous conflict in the region, and thousands of men, women, and children from the area have been forced to flee their homes. Dr. Peretti emphatically declares that the scientists have a responsibility to the people - to help and not just profit. Yvonne realizes the importance of giving back to help these people. Next, she travels to Jaipur, India to explore cutting and manufacture there. India is the mecca of colored stones - true global sourcers. Again, we see the importance of the translators to the negotiation process. Without fighting, you cannot buy anything in Jaipur. Saad seals the deal - a shake of the hand and the deal is done. Lapidary work is a time-honored traditi0on here, but through the course of the film it becomes apparent the hardships workers and their family can endure. The turning point is when they are driving through the community, small children tapping on the sides of the car. Yvonne realizes she can make her change in the community now, and begins to solicit jewelers worldwide through social media. The outpouring of support globally results in the donation of over kilos of rice to the local community that were badly needed. Her initial beginnings were purely transactional, but she realizes that it is about the people. Yvonne becomes committed to changing how the west deals with the east. Soon she is returning to the US, but the seed of change has been planted.
