As Mackenzie begins to act honestly, Dick discovers that he is falling in love with Eloise. Not able to eat or sleep because of his love for her, Dick leaves the camp. Mackenzie, who ascertains that Eloise has been faithful, follows Dick and falls into a mountain stream. Dick saves his life, but soon dies from pneumonia after wishing happiness to Mackenzie and Eloise.

From various sources she learns that Jimmy's disappearance was preceded by a shoot-out between him and prospector Laberge over Seattle Lou. Barbara then makes the acquaintance of Laberge, who tells her that Cort shot Jimmy. Barbara insists upon fighting a duel with Cort, who fires into the air and is wounded by Barbara's bullet. Just as the shots are fired, Tully appears with the news that Seattle Lou has just arrived in town with her new husband, Jimmy Henderson.
- During the Gold Rush of '49, Tom Romaine kills William Kent and runs off with his wife, Kate, leaving behind Kate's daughter, Betty, who is reared by a priest. Fifteen years later, Betty goes to California and looks up Tennessee, one of her father's friends, who makes her his partner in the Golden Princess Mine. Romaine learns of Betty's whereabouts and, with Kate's help, passes himself off as Betty's father. Tennessee recognizes them both and lets Betty know that Romaine killed her father. Romaine dynamites the mine with Betty and Tennessee inside; and Kate, who has killed Romaine, dies while rescuing them. Tennessee and Betty decide to become permanent partners in marriage.
