Ryan Gosling and Eva Mendes look more in love than ever.
The couple was spotted at Disneyland in Anaheim, California, on Sunday night, holding hands at the happiest place on Earth. Gosling wore a hat and a blue sweater, while Mendes glowed in an off-the-shoulder black top and a Chicago Bulls hat. They were joined by another couple and two bodyguards, and rode the Haunted Mansion, Big Thunder Mountain Railroad and It's a Small World amid other rides, and even shopped for a few souvenirs.
Check out Mendes' radiant smile.

Georges Méliès’ Le Manoir Du Diable signified the dawn of the horror film. A lost film, Esmeralda (1905), the first adaptation of Victor Hugo's The Hunchback of Notre-Dame, is the offical second installment in the genre. It was created by founding French director Alice Guy-Blaché at the dawn of the 20th Century, who would aid in revolutionizing the art as Gaumont's leading director, and one of the first experimenters with color and special effects in the medium. Her work was succeeded by another adaptation of Hugo's novel in 1911, with an ambitious version by Albert Capellani, another lost film. Though such powerful filmmakers were behind the first explorations into the horror genre on screen (followed by J. Searle Dawley's Frankenstein), it would not be until the early 1920s that horror would even...

Hunchback Of Notre Dame (1923) starring Lon Chaney screens Thursday January 19th at 7:00pm at Schlafly Bottleworks (7260 Southwest Avenue Maplewood, Mo 63143).
In fifteenth century Paris, the brother of the archdeacon plots with the gypsy king to foment a peasant revolt. Meanwhile, a freakish hunchback falls in love with the gypsy queen.
Victor Hugo’s classic The Hunchback of Notre Dame received a grand send-up from Universal Pictures, and superstar Lon Chaney (as Quasimodo) in 1923. The studio spent a lot of money on this production, and it shows. Universal claimed this film made Mr. Chaney a superstar. Their pride is understandable, but Chaney had already achieved that position. He was a hot property throughout the 1920s. The Lon Chaney silent The Hunchback of Notre Dame is an important document, and a pretty good movie, especially if you can see it projected. William Dieterle's 1939 film with Charles Laughton is an outright classic, with iconic casting in every role, but in a way it, like its predecessor, is as much a travesty of Victor Hugo's story as the Disney version. Tragedy is softened, hard edges blurred. (And actually there's a lot to admire in the cartoon: an epic cinematic scale and vision, use of humor that doesn't actually wreck the serious aspects. It's just that, starting with Quasimodo not being deaf—because he has to sing, you see—means you're not filming Notre-Dame de Paris by Victor Hugo at all.)So it was perhaps inevitable that the French would one day have to show us how it's done, and present a more faithful rendering of the book.

Live action remakes of favorite animated movies are all the rage these days, so it makes sense that yet another formerly animated film is getting a reboot. This time, though, the new movie will remind you of a film that.s gotten little love since it was originally released. According to The Tracking Board, a live action update of Victor Hugo.s 1831 novel The Hunchback of Notre Dame is being planned. I say it.s based on the novel, because Disney is not actually involved in this production. The film, Esmeralda will tell the story from her point of view. This was most famously adapted for the screen in the 1996 Disney film of the same name. In the book and the animated movie, Esmeralda is a beautiful and compassionate Gypsy street performer who is beloved by the townsfolk. Esmeralda comes to the aid of Quasimodo after he is flogged by...

It's a little late in the day to extol the virtues of the Papermill Playhouse's production of "Hunchback of Notre Dame" which has its last performance on April 5, but since the show is being groomed for Broadway, it's relevant to point out that the production is simply magnificent. (The play premiered at the La Jolla Playhouse in San Diego last fall before moving here.) Upon entering the Papermill, we took our seats in front row, center....generally the best in the house. However, there was concern because the entire stage now had a massive new floor temporarily built on top of it. The result of this was the "new" stage not only extending practically into our seats but also having the effect of "elevator shoes"....it was a good foot above where the normal stage rose. My concern was that everyone would have to crane their necks...

Montreal’s Cineclub film society is holding a special screening of the classic silent film, The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1923) on October 3rd & 4th at 7:30pm. One of the most enduring adaptations of the popular novel by Victor Hugo, the film stars the incomparable Lon Chaney in the role of Quasimodo. The event is far more than just a screening though, and will be accompanied by live music and during the intermission the audience will be delighted by a live performance from a dancer of Cirquantique, who will perform a dance befitting of a real-life Esmeralda.
The event will also take place at a beautiful Gothic church located in the heart of Westmount, just outside of the Park. The film will be shown as it was originally intended, at 18 frames per second in celluloid. There will be snacks and home-made refreshments available. The event is part of a fundraising...

“I think we’re all glad that they changed the name to Fantasia,” states Steve Martin dryly during his introduction of Fantasia 2000 regarding the film’s predecessor, which was originally called The Concert Feature. (Fantasia may be a slightly cooler-sounding title, but it’s not much more inviting to the average audience member than The Concert Feature.) That single line of dialogue represents the key to the creative struggle at the heart of Fantasia 2000, a perfectly entertaining film with no identity of its own. Though Martin is funny in his few moments on screen (all of the celebrity introductions in this new film are mildly charming in their own way, though they vary in tone from Martin’s wacky fourth-wall-breaking humor to regal sincerity, as with Angela Lansbury’s climactic appearance), the fact that a recognizable comedian needs to be one of our ushers into a world of...

Exclusive: Almost two decades after The Hunchback Of Notre Dame animated feature, Disney is revisiting Victor Hugo’s gothic classic, this time in TV. ABC has put in development Esmeralda, a limited/event series written by feature scribe Evan Daugherty, who co-wrote a revisionist take of another classic tale with Snow White And The Huntsman. Esmeralda is the latest entry in the event series genre, which is red hot among the broadcast and cable networks. It marks the first major sale for Mandeville since the company signed a new deal with ABC Studios and brought in Zaks as president of television in April. File this under films to start paying some serious attention to. Chinese auteur Zhang Yimou is circling Quasimodo, the Josh Brolin vehicle based on Victor Hugo’s classic novel The Hunchback of Notre Dame.
If you don’t know who Yimou is, let me throw a few titles out there: House of Flying Daggers, Hero, Raise the Red Lantern, and the more recent The Flowers of War, about the Rape of Nanking. Now do you understand why this piece of information is so exciting?
Variety reported that Yimou is interested in directing Quasimodo, a project that Josh Brolin pitched to Warner Brothers way back in 2011. Brolin has plans to star, presumably as Quasimodo. The film is being written by Kieran and Michele Mulroney (Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows).
Quasimodo will follow the story of Esmeralda, a gypsy girl who takes sanctuary in the Notre Dame Cathedral after being accused of murder.

House of Flying Daggers director Zhang Yimou is in negotiations to join Warner Bros' Quasimodo.
The project is based on the original Hunchback of Notre Dame novel, and has been in development for more than two years, according to Variety.
Josh Brolin signed up for the project back in 2011, and Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows writers Kieran and Michele Mulroney have completed a screenplay.
Victor Hugo's novel Notre Dame de Paris was first published in 1931 and centres on Quasimodo, the deformed bell-ringer of Notre Dame Cathedral who falls for gypsy Esmeralda.
The story has been adapted several times for the big screen, including 1939's black-and-white classic and Disney's 1996 animated version.
Quasimodo is yet to be assigned a release date.

Josh Brolin is a busy man these days, with his scene-stealing and spot-on performance as young Agent K (Tommy Lee Jones) in "Men In Black 3," chasing baddie Sean Penn with Ryan Gosling in the buzzy ensemble crime flick "Gangster Squad," and getting "gnarly" in Spike Lee's "Oldboy."

The St. Louis Globe-Democrat is a monthly newspaper run by Steve DeBellis, a well know St. Louis historian, and it.s the largest one-man newspaper in the world. When Steve informed me that this month.s St. Louis Globe-Democrat was to take place in 1939, often labeled “Hollywood’s Greatest Year”, I knew the possibilities were immense.

You’d think my walk home from Rango, a movie that consistently kept me laughing like a madman for two hours, would be one of elation and knee-slapping fun memories. Not so. As my laughter subsided, I realized — man, I just saw an animated movie that centered on a sociopathic lizard who takes a contemplative, hallucinatory look inward to discover his true calling in the world. Whoa – suddenly that fart joke had a lot more resonance. There are universal questions everyone asks themselves at some point in their lives. Ideas, complications, internal debates that spring out of existence and challenge us as individuals. Some turn to spirituality. Others take back packing trips through difficult-to-pronounce regions of the world. But after watching Rango and looking back through a lengthy history of Hollywood’s animated films, I wondered: why not turn to cartoons? The Hunchback of Notre Dame The Existential Crisis: My lack of attractive physical qualities will never...

A lot has happened to Quasimodo since novelist Victor Hugo first imagined him in 1831′s The Hunchback of Notre Dame. Most obviously, he’s gotten better and better looking, especially since the advent of movie houses. In 1923, Lon Chaney portrayed the grotesque yet sympathetic outcast who rings the bell atop Paris’ most famous cathedral. Charles Laughton (left) was a little more dignified in the 1939 version. In 1956, Anthony Quinn was less monstrous, and in 1997, the otherwise dashing Mandy Patinkin labored under the hump. The trend from gargoyle to GQ continues with today’s news, first reported by Variety, that handsome Josh Brolin...

Josh Brolin is said to be teaming up with screenwriting duo Kieran and Michele Mulroney to develop a film that takes a different look on Victor Hugo's The Hunchback of Notre Dame, according to Variety.
The trade also suggests Tim Burton may be in early talks to direct the adaptation.
The Hunchback of Notre Dame dates back to 1831 by French novelist Victor Hugo. The story has been much-loved throughout the years and has been adapted many times for television, film, and stage.
The story is about Quasimodo, a deformed hunchback who lives in the Notre Dame Catherdral in Paris. He falls in love with a beautiful Gypsy, Esmeralda, which proves dangerous for him.
Not much is known about the film at this time, but it might not be for a while as Brolin is currently shooting Men in Black III.

Tim Burton and Josh Brolin are to team up for a big screen remake of 'The Hunchback of Notre Dame'. The 'Alice in Wonderland' director and the actor-and-producer are working with Warner Bros. to develop the project, with a script based on the 1831 novel by Victor Hugo, 'Hunchback'. It tells the story of Quasimodo, a deformed and hunchbacked bell-ringer of the Norte Dame cathedral in Paris, France, who tragically falls in love with a beautiful gypsy called Esmerelda. The book was first turned into a film for 1905's 'Esmeralda', although the last major adaptations were in 1997, with an animated Disney movie and a TV action picture starring Mandy Patinkin and Salma Hayek. The project is being spearheaded by Josh - who would produce as well as star - and while Tim is keen to get involved, he won't commit until he sees the final script according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Actor Josh Brolin ("Jonah Hex") and director Tim Burton will team up to produce a live-action, Warners adaptation of author Victor Hugo's "The Hunchback Of Notre Dame."
Screenplay is by Kieran and Michele Mulroney ("Sherlock Holmes: A Game Of Shadows)."
"The Hunchback of Notre-Dame" (aka "Our Lady of Paris") was first published in 1831.
Set in Paris, France, circa 1482, the story introduces 'Quasimodo', the deformed bell-ringer of the Notre Dame Church, at the 'Festival Of Fools', where he is crowned the 'Pope of the Fools''.
Meanwhile 'Esmeralda', a beautiful Gypsy with a kind heart, captures the hearts of 'Captain Phoebus', Quasimodo and his adopted father, 'Claude Frollo', Archdeacon of Notre Dame.
Frollo, torn between his lust and the rules of the church, orders Quasimodo to kidnap Esmerelda, but during the attempt, the hunchback is captured by Phoebus and his guards. After Quasimodo is tied and whipped, Esmeralda, seeing his thirst,...

Josh Brolin is set to star in Tim Burton's take on The Hunchback of Notre Dame. The project is being developed at Warner Bros. and is being written by Kieran and Michele Mulroney, who wrote the upcoming Sherlock Holmes sequel.
The film will be an adaptation of the 1831 novel by Victor Hugo, which tells the story of "Quasimodo, a deformed and hunchbacked bell-ringer of the Norte Dame cathedral who tragically falls in love with beautiful gypsy named Esmerelda."
It was first adapted for the screen in 1905's Esmeralda, and was again brought to the screen in two 1997 films, Disney's animated movie and an action-heavy pic starring Mandy Patinkin and Salma Hayek.
This sounds like the perfect project for Burton's sensibilities. The project is being spearheaded by Brolin, who is also producing. Burton is busy working on Dark Shadows for Warners, and is only interested if the script turns out well.

There are some stories out there that the film industry will always come back to, find a way to retell, and rake in the profits (hence Gnomeo and Juliet and the upcoming Beastly). One of these stories is Victor Hugo's The Hunchback of Notre Dame. Hell, the first version of the story came all the way back in 1905 with Alice Guy and Victorin-Hippolyte Jasset's short film Esmeralda. Well guess what? We're getting another one. Variety reports that Josh Brolin - of all people - is now developing a new version of the story over at Warner Bros with plans to star. Even stranger, the studio is seeing it as a possible film for Tim Burton, though he hasn't yet been attached. The script is being written by Kieran and Michele Mulroney based on an idea by Brolin, though the exact details are being kept under wraps. While I...

If Alice in Wonderland weren't one of the most atrocious films I have ever seen, I'd probably be excited to see Tim Burton get behind the camera for his own version of the Hunchback of Notre Dame. And in all honesty, could he pick anything more obvious? I'd just wish he'd do something original again... What makes this interesting is that Josh Brolin (Jonah Hex) is developing the "Hunchback of Notre Dame" project at Warner Bros., with the thesp starring and producing through his Brolin Productions shingle. The scripting team of Kieran and Michele Mulroney are on board to pen the screenplay, based on an idea developed by Brolin. Plot details are being kept under wraps, other than being based on the Victor Hugo's novel "Notre Dame de Paris" about Quasimodo, the deformed bell-ringer of Notre Dame, and the beautiful gypsy Esmeralda.

Josh Brolin is teaming with screenwriters Kieran and Michele Mulroney to develop an idea of his that features a new take on Victor Hugo's The Hunchback of Notre Dame . Variety is reporting the deal and suggesting that Tim Burton could be in early talks to direct. With the story dating back to 1831, "The Hunchback of Notre Dame" has been adapted dozens of times across film, television, radio, and for the stage (including in musical and ballet versions). Set in Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris, the novel tells of Quasimodo, a deformed hunchback who dwells within and who falls in love with a dancing Gypsy, Esmeralda. Specifics of the project are unknown and, while it is likely that Brolin would appear in the film, it is unclear whether it would be in the part of Quasimodo....

Just when you think the shamelessness and the senselessness of Hollywood can’t possibly get any shamelesser or senselesser, Variety is there to correct this misapprehension: Paramount has snagged an untitled action/comedy pitch from the scripting team of Will Block and Jake Emanuel for Lorenzo Di Bonaventura to produce. Story is based on the framework from Victor Hugo's original "The Hunchback of Notre Dame." Hugo's novel, published in 1831, is set in the 15th century and centers on the tragic romance between Quasimodo, the deformed bell-ringer of the Notre Dame cathedral in Paris, and the gypsy woman Esmeralda. Surely this will pave the way for all the other long-awaited action-comedy adaptations from literature, including The Count of Monte Cristo starring Will Farrell and Adam Sandler, Medea starring Tina Fey, The Confessions of Saint Augustine starring Steve Carell, Hamlet starring Russell Brand (with The Stranger as Claudius), The Great Gatsby...

Looks as if Paramount is ready to have Quasimodo come back for a quasi-retelling of the Victor Hugo classic The Hunchback of Notre Dame. That's right, kids! It's almost time once again to do the hump!

Not sure exactly how much this retelling will dabble in our genre, but we'll keep our eyes open!

As far as I know, there is no completely faithful film adaptation of Victor Hugo's The Hunchback of Notre Dame. Therefore it's not surprising to learn, via Variety, of yet another big screen version in the works that will play loose with the plot. However, even without knowing many details of this new project, which is being set up at Paramount under producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura (Transformers), I'm having difficulty with the thing being called an "action/comedy."
Sure, there have been a lot of liberties taken with the classic novel, and Disney's animated version has those comic-relief gargoyles, but this is already sounding like it could be the most detached so far. And it's a good bet the humor will be tasteless enough that the cartoon Esmeralda's stripper-pole dance will seem perfectly appropriate by comparison.
