- Agatha, called "Miss Petticoats," is daughter of a French nobleman and an American woman, lives with her grandfather, Captain Joel Stewart, since the death of her mother years before. Knowing nothing of her royal heritage, Agatha gladly takes a job as secretary to the wealthy Sarah Copeland, whose nephew, Guy Hamilton, immediately begins pursuing the new employee. Jealous of Agatha, one of Guy's former sweethearts, Mrs. Worth Courtleigh, starts spreading rumors about her, and when Joel hears a particularly scandalous one, he dies of shock. Taking Agatha away from all the gossip, Sarah sails with her to Europe, where Agatha finally learns about her bloodline, and also discovers that she is the heiress to a fortune. Then, when she and Sarah return home, Agatha forgives all the people who believed the rumors, and marries the Reverend Ralph Harding, who was always certain of her innocence.—Pamela Short
- Miss Petticoats, a young mill worker, lives with her grandfather. Her mother eloped with a French count who neglected and abused her and shortly after the birth of Miss Petticoats, died. Miss Petticoats' parentage is the subject of gossip in the village. She stops a runaway and saves the life of wealthy Mrs. Copeland, who rewards her by giving her a position as secretary. Guy Hamilton, Mrs. Copeland's spoiled nephew, resents Miss Petticoats' entrance into the home, fearing she might share some of the inheritance which would otherwise be his. Mrs. Worth-Courtleigh, a young married woman who is in love with Guy, is jealous of the girl, fearing her power over Guy. Guy is gradually attracted to Miss Petticoats and takes her about, making Mrs. Worth-Courtleigh spreads reports of the girl's parentage and her relations with Guy and Miss Petticoats is subsequently snubbed by all, and when she questions Guy, he makes an insulting proposal that they go to the city together. Mrs. Copeland, who alone stands by and believes in Miss Petticoats, denounces Guy for his infamy, Mrs. Worth-Courtleigh's husband learns through a letter of his wife's infidelity and after a scene, she and Guy leave together for the city. Mrs. Copeland and Miss Petticoats leave together for France, where Miss Petticoats meets her paternal grandfather and is acknowledged by him just before his death, making her the heiress to his title and fortune. Harding, a young minister who has been in love with her since childhood and who had preached the sermon that drove Guy and Mrs. Worth-Courtleigh from the village, because of their treatment of Miss Petticoats, had afterwards resigned his pulpit and devoted himself to social welfare work. He meets her again, but despite the fact that she is rich and popular, she is not happy, so he endeavors to interest her in his welfare work. Together they go to see Mrs. Worth-Courtleigh, who is dying, and she confesses her part in ruining Miss Petticoats and in weakening and demoralizing Guy. Guy tries to renew friendship with Miss Petticoats, but she scorns him.
