Reels 2-5 survived. The first reel is lost.
A "Red Feather Photoplay." Early on, since Universal did not own theaters, they used to have a three-level system to make it easier for theater owners to decide whether to acquire a film for display. Red Feather films were the lowest level, then Bluebird, then Jewel. Red Feather films were cheaper, everyday productions with widely popular (if a bit simple or sentimental) stories. Contrast this with Jewel films like Lon Chaney in Phantom of the Opera where the full prestige and resources of Universal were tapped.
The partial 35mm nitrate print was found buried in a Canadian landfill in 1978.
It is believed that Lon Chaney did not appear in the missing first reel, so all of his footage is thought to have survived.
