The plane crash scene at the end of Chapter: 3, beginning of Ch: 4, is popular newsreel footage of a Gee Bee Z Racer's tragic accident. Lowell Bayles was the ill fated pilot who died in this crash. This happened on December 5, 1931 and the footage was edited into this movie.
Most of the flying scenes are stock footage from newsreels, other movies, and film taken at air shows. For instance, the "tire repair in the air" scene, is from a popular barnstorming newsreel of the time featuring Gladys Ingle. Wing-walker, Gladys Ingle transferring from Bon McDougall's airplane to Art Goebel's airplane with no parachute or safety gear in 1927 is shown. Other airplane transfers were taken from various barnstorming films that starred some of the famous stunt performers of the time. Included are the famed pilots Earl Daugherty of Long Beach, California and Florida's Bill Lindley. Stunts by the "13 Black Cats" group of stunt pilots are also included.
