Lovely...and actually meant to appeal to most viewers!

This is just one of many strange films from the DVD collection "Unseen Cinema: Early American Avant-Garde Film 1894-1941" and it's from Disc 3. Unlike many of these art films, "Rhythm in Light" does have a musical score on the film strip--from Grieg's "Per Gynt Suite". According to the film maker, this film is meant to try to show what occurs in the mind when one listens to music. And, unlike most of the art films on this disc, this one appears to be an effort to create a piece of art that IS approachable to the average person--with a very nice melody and an amazingly beautiful arrangement of objects and shapes that move across the screen. I really appreciated this after seeing a succession of Dadaist films, as the Dadaists DIDN'T want to appeal to a person in a positive way but provoke them! Here, the work is very relaxing and hypnotic. Because of this, it's one of the few films on this disc to which I can actually give a numerical rating. It's lovely and I truly appreciate the work that went into making this.
