A high-flying crowd pleaser that only the studio system could manufacture, MGM’s Test Pilot was directed by Victor Fleming, written by Howard Hawks, and starred the can’t-miss trio of Clark Gable, Myrna Loy, and Spencer Tracy. Gable plays a reckless flyboy, Loy his down-home sweetheart, and Tracy his true-blue pal. The airborne pyrotechnics and earthbound romance spawned a big box office and several Oscar nominations.

Roughly 50 years after the first episode of “The Jetsons” premiered, fans are gearing up to celebrate the birth of George Jetson, which according to lore, is July 31, 2022. But is that really his birthday?
On Thursday, a hawk-eyed fan pointed out that “someone is about to give birth” to the show’s main character, via a fan site listing the family patriarch’s exact birthdate.
The animated sitcom created by William Hannah and Joseph Barbera took place in the 21st century. Although no mention to a specific year was ever made in the show, promotional materials and articles from the time explained that it was set exactly 100 years in the future, according to MeTV.
Further evidence can be found in the episode “Test Pilot,” which aired Dec. 30, 1962. When Jetson’s doctor tells him he “should live to be 150,” he replies, “I’ve got 110 good years ahead of me!” – making him 40 years old.

Clark Gable did not intend to see action when World War II came to America. Which is not to say he ignored the war. Gable was there that day in 1940 when President Franklin Roosevelt gave his famous “Arsenal of Democracy” speech from the Oval Office. And, indeed, the first thing the movie star did when he heard about the Pearl Harbor attack was cable Fdr to offer his full support—and, tellingly, the besieged president promptly answered right back.
But then in the 1930s and early ‘40s, Gable was “the King of Hollywood;” the reigning movie star who could sell more tickets than anybody this side of Shirley Temple, and he didn’t have to sing or dance to do it either. He was a mustachioed and muscular alpha who appealed to everybody, even presidents, and was one of the few leading men who would tell Louis B. Mayer no...

John Glenn died Thursday at the age of 95. One of the founding figures of the U.S. space program and also a long-serving U.S. Senator, Glenn had a profoundly historic and uniquely American life. Let’s take a closer look.
Glenn was born in Cambridge, Ohio, in 1921. He went to elementary and high school in New Concord, Ohio, and attended Muskingum College in the same town, though he didn’t complete his senior year at the school, opting to drop out at 20 and enlist in the U.S. Air Corps after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, according to the New York Times.

Veterans Day movies on TCM: From 'The Sullivans' to 'Patton' (photo: George C. Scott in 'Patton') This evening, Turner Classic Movies is presenting five war or war-related films in celebration of Veterans Day. For those outside the United States, Veterans Day is not to be confused with Memorial Day, which takes place in late May. (Scroll down to check out TCM's Veterans Day movie schedule.) It's good to be aware that in the last century alone, the U.S. has been involved in more than a dozen armed conflicts, from World War I to the invasion of Iraq, not including direct or indirect military interventions in countries as disparate as Iran, Guatemala, and Chile. As to be expected in a society that reveres people in uniform, American war movies have almost invariably glorified American soldiers even in those rare instances when they have dared to criticize the military establishment.

Adele would only lose weight if it affected her sex life. The 24-year-old singer - who recently gave birth to her first child with partner Simon Konecki - is happy being her size and does not think she needs to change unless her health worsens. She said: ''I read a comment on YouTube that I thought would upset me 'Test pilot for pies' - but I've always been a size 14-16 and been fine with it.'' ''I would only lose weight if it affected my health or sex life, which it doesn't.'' Karl Lagerfeld has previously criticised her size, saying that despite...

Myrna Loy Q&A Pt.2: Political Activism, Hollywood blacklist While doing research on Myrna Loy and her times, was there anything that came as a shock to you? Any major difficulties while trying to uncover aspects of Loy's life and career? Was there a "most enjoyable" area of research? Or perhaps a "least enjoyable"? I sometimes felt frustrated by Loy's success in covering her tracks. I longed for more revelations, but her step-granddaughter Deb Hornblow warned me when I first got going on this book that it was going to be tough to find original material that was going to unlock secrets. Also, time has passed, and most of those closest to her are not around any more. Most enjoyable to me was watching Myrna Loy movies. She was a really terrific actress, a natural, without formal training or a background in theater, who had a grace, intelligence and...

The Twitch-curated Attack The Bloc series of Cold War era science fiction films from the Eastern Bloc continues at the Tiff Bell Lightbox tonight at 9:15 with a screening of Marek Piestrak's Test Pilot Pirxa.Corporate interests want to replace human space crews with lifelike robots ("finite non-linears"), arguing that it will be cheaper and safer than sending humans into space. But steely Commander Pirx (Sergei Desnitsky) is having none of it: he knows this isn't about safety or cost effectiveness, but rather about lining the pockets of big business. Determined to prove the superiority of humanity, he agrees to pilot a test flight commanding a crew made up of both humans and nonlinears, without knowing which is which -- but when disaster strikes, to...

Mostly a Paramount star, Claudette Colbert hasn't been a frequent presence on Turner Classic Movies — that is, apart from reruns of her relatively few movies at MGM, Warner Bros., and Rko. Unfortunately, TCM's "Summer Under the Stars" day dedicated to Colbert — Friday, August 12 — won't rectify that glaring cinematic omission. [Claudette Colbert Movie Schedule.] Despite the fact that dozens of Claudette Colbert movies remain unavailable — thanks to Universal, owner of the old Paramount movie library — TCM is only presenting one Colbert premiere, Ken Annakin's British-made 1952 drama The Planter's Wife / Outpost in Malaya, co-starring Jack Hawkins. Of course, one rarely seen movie is better than none, but still… Think The Wiser Sex, The Lady Lies, Manslaughter, Young Man of Manhattan, The Phantom President (in case it's lying in some vault somewhere), The Man from Yesterday, Misleading Lady, His Woman, Zaza, Secrets of a Secretary, I Met Him in Paris, Texas Lady, Practically Yours, Skylark, Private Worlds,...

The Ch'p to my G'nort, fellow Astorian and nerd Rick Marshall at MTV SplashPage scored a solid exclusive today by debuting a line-up of some of awesome space cops we'll be seeing in Green Lantern. You can see it here in high-res.
In addition to Tomar-Re, Kilowog and Sinestro who've been seen in their own character one-sheets, now's the time for super deep cut nerds to (and I believe this is the medical term) squee to their heart's content.
If you don't know who some of these emerald warriors are, let's go from left to right and make an introduciton.
Boodikka: A tough-cookie from the planet Bellatix. She first appeared in Volume 3 of the Gl series. (The current comics run is Volume 4. Volume 1 is the really old school Golden Age stuff with Alan Scott, Volume 2 is the cheesy-but-fun Silver Age stuff that introduced Hal Jordan, The Guardians, Sinestro and Qward.

Chicago – As the weeks, months, and years make it clearer that we will never get a live-action continuation of one of the best television programs ever, “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” (it’s just cruel that there are two “Sex and the City” movies and we can’t even get a “Buffy” reunion special), fans of the franchise are forced to turn to alternate advancements in the universe, such as the Dark Horse Comics series. The very-popular and critically-acclaimed comics have been turned into Motion Comics and released in a 2-disc Blu-ray set with mixed results.
Blu-Ray Rating: 3.5/5.0
The first issue of the “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” comics was released in March of 2007 with an arc written by show creator Joss Whedon. Naturally, that arc, “The Long Way Home,” kicks off the Blu-ray set and it does so with the melodramatic abandon allowed only by the print form. If “The Long Way Home” was on TV,...

Yesterday marks a small but significant moment in history: Test pilot Markus Scherdel flew the Solar Impulse aircraft for the first time. It's amazing because Solar Impulse is entirely solar-powered, and took to the sky through simple light from the sun.
The flight was nothing more than a short 350-meter hop a meter off the ground, but with the four props spinning under electric motor power, it's an amazing triumph that marks the beginning of the end of 10 years of work. Solar impulse Hb-sia was, for this short flight, not garnering its energy from the sun--the solar cells are going to be connected up for the next series of trials--but the significance is undiminished, since now the research team knows its vehicle is air-worthy, all it needs is to perfect the solar charging system.
The flight, despite its similarity to the Wright brother's first short hop, is unlikely to be as transformational.

If I only had a brain, I would have asked for The Wizard Of Oz: 70Th Anniversary Ultimate Collector’S Edition (Warner, $69.92) three months before it premiered on DVD last Tuesday instead of three days before. But, like the Cowardly Lion, I lack courage, and couldn’t muster the resolve to ask Warner Home Video for this stellar (and extras-packed) four-disc set so far in advance. If you read Part One of my review, then I guess you have a lot of free time. Speaking of time, I’m running Out of it, so let’s get back on that Yellow Brick Road as I break down the bonus features on Discs Three and Four. (And remember: I Have watched Everything on this whole set! Really!)
