And now for something we had read about but never before saw: Tod Slaughter’s highly entertaining murder thriller is stylized in a vintage theatrical format, the Victorian blood & thunder barnstorming drama, originally from 1880 or thereabouts. Slaughter’s refined gentleman is also a crazed killer with a bizarre modus operandi. Everything that happens is borderline preposterous, and all the better for it. It’s not exactly a horror picture — unadventurous fans may just see a creaky 80-year old movie — but Tod Slaughter is one of a kind. Kino’s new Blu-ray is a beautiful restoration with an informative and entertaining audio commentary.

Luther fans, rejoice! The BBC has today confirmed that Idris Elba’s gruff detective will don that signature tweed coat once again for an “utterly heart-stopping and unmissable” four-part season.
That’s right, Luther season 5 is a go, and it’ll herald John Luther’s first small-screen appearance since December of 2015. Granted, Elba has since reprised as the iconic sleuth, specifically for last year’s Sport Relief sketch, but with the show’s co-creator and writer Neil Cross also on board, fans will no doubt be looking to this all-new fifth installment with bated breath.
Filming is due to commence sometime next year, which would put Luther‘s fifth season on course for a late 2018 premiere. Whatever the case (see what we did there?), Elba’s husky-voiced detective was last seen tackling crime opposite DS Emma Lane (Rose Leslie), and with no mention of casting at this early, early stage,...

It’s approaching newly a year and a half since the TV favourite Luther last hit the small screen, but word has just come through that BBC America have given the big thumbs up for the go ahead on Season 5, and yes Idris Elba fans – the big man himself will be returning.
Currently slated as a limited return with only four episodes scheduled, no other cast or air date has been revealed but shooting is set to start early in the new year for the BBC and BBC America. Show creator Neil Cross confirmed the award-winning series return with a statement,
“Now what? It’s a question Idris and I get asked a lot. What happened to John Luther after we last saw him striding unbowed through the streets of his city, his blood red London? It can’t be over, can it? There’s so much we don’t know.
