- A rookie flyer, Ens. Alan Drake, joins the famous Hellcats Squadron right out of flight school in Pensacola. He doesn't make a great first impression when he is forced to ditch his airplane and parachute to safety when he arrives at the base but is unable to land due to heavy fog. On his first official outing, his poor shooting skills results in the Hellcats losing an air combat competition. His fellow pilots accept him anyway but they think he's crossed the line when they erroneously conclude that while their CO Bill Gary is away, Drake has a purported affair with his wife Lorna. Drake is now an outcast and is prepared to resign from the Navy but his extreme heroism in saving Bill Gary's life turns things around.—garykmcd
- Within the US Navy, Ensign Alan Drake has just graduated from flight school in Pensacola, Florida at the top of his class, excited that his first assignment is with an elite squadron in San Diego nicknamed the Hellcats who are known to hand pick their members. What he doesn't know is that he was not hand picked by them, the squadron members who generally want experienced pilots for their sometimes risky maneuvers. Their reservations with Alan, who they mockingly nickname Pensacola, are heightened upon his auspicious arrival, he risking his and the other members' lives by ignoring orders of the CO Bill Gary in his yet unwarranted bravado. While not quite shunned but not accepted in the casual camaraderie that exists between the squadron's pilots and flight crew, he is at least given a chance by a few of the men, including Bill. While he slowly begins to be accepted by the other members on his own merits, a series of events that happen between Alan and the first person he met upon his arrival in San Diego, namely Bill's wife, Lorna Gary, most specifically in helping her deal with the grief of the death of her childhood best friend in Bill's absence, she who was taught upon her marriage that she has to display a certain sense of stoicism in what is the all too often situation of attending military funerals, that may forever jeopardize Alan's standing within the squad.—Huggo
- Ensign Alan Drake is assigned to the elite "Hell Cat" squadron of Navy fliers based in San Diego, despite being relatively inexperienced. Getting off on bad footing by ruining the squadron's chances of winning a target-shooting competition, Drake is encouraged by Jerry Banning, an officer whose sister Lorna is the wife of the squadron commander, William Gary. Drake and Banning work on a device to help aircraft land in the fog, but when Banning is killed testing it and Drake appears to be getting romantically entangled with Lorna, the men of the squadron turn on Drake. Only when Commander Gary himself is in jeopardy does Drake get a chance to show his fellow fliers what kind of man he really is.—Jim Beaver <jumblejim@prodigy.net>
