Sex & Nudity
-
- The closing gag has two of the boys kissing. (The instigator thinks he's with a woman.)
Violence & Gore
-
- A man in a cemetery shoots and injures a boy with buckshot.
- The boys find rifles in a haunted house and fire them.
- One youth has a brief fistfight with a villain near the end.
Profanity
-
- A white youth bumps into his black friend in the dark and says, "Next time you come out of the dark, put a coat of whitewash on, will ya?" He replies, "I'm so scared, I'm turning white now."
- Another character says to him, "Ah, you're yella." He replies, "If I'm yella you're colorblind."
- In the kissing scene (mentioned above), the boy being kissed is black. His race seems to be part of the joke.
- Despite the color jokes, the gang treats him no different than they do one another. Although he is portrayed as the wide-eyed, frightened black, he seems no more frightened by his scary predicament than his friends are.
- A dwarf becomes the butt of jokes about his size. When two of the boys capture him and seek a place to keep him, Scrunno says, "I wish we had a mousetrap."
Alcohol, Drugs & Smoking
Frightening & Intense Scenes
-
- Characters make many references to the "monster killer" and how he sucks blood.
- A boy becomes a "zombie" and moves about as if in a trance.
- There are many spooky scenes in a cemetery and a shadowy, cobwebbed house with hidden passageways. The horror star Bela Lugosi is typically frightening in appearance and manner. He looks like his most famous character, Dracula.
- A floating skull with glowing eyes vows revenge. (This turns out to be the boys in disguise.)
- There are many other supernatural occurrences, including objects that move on their own and a character who can vanish into thin air. They are (unconvincingly) explained away at the end.
- The general comic tone of this film may mitigate the effect of the scary scenes.
