Purely being at the right place at the right time, namely while his ship is docked in San Diego, Casey Kirby, the most unassuming of US Navy sailors, is chosen to be in a publicity photo kissing Hollywood starlet, Diana Golden. The resulting published photo leads to a new appreciation for Casey among his fellow sailors as a man who can get any girl he wants, the biggest doubter being Jake. Knowing her reputation for spurning *any* man who tries to hit on her, Jake lays down a bet among his fellow sailors that Casey will not be able to get a kiss from a singer who goes by the stage name "The Countess" of Swingland, a club in their next stop, San Francisco. Upon Casey meeting her, The Countess does prove that her reputation precedes her. Nonetheless, Casey, by his pure nature regardless of the bet, is able at least to spend time with The Countess. What happens between the two of them is affected by they actually falling for each other, combined with the fact of the bet. Complicating matters is the meddling by both Bessie Dale and Barney Waters, a fellow Swingland singer/The Countess' roommate and Casey's fellow sailor/best friend respectively, the two, much to Barney's chagrin, who are also dating (he equally enamored and scared of her).
