- Oliver Yates (Jess Barker), young instructor at a Military Academy, who is idolized by his students, leaves his post to enlist in the army. The school gives him a big going-away party and Yates leaves in a flurry of speeches and gifts. Upon taking his army physical, he is rejected because of an old ear injury. Ashamed to go back to academy, Yates gets a job through Joe Briggs (Frank Sully), a friend of his school days whom he Hmeets at the recruitment station. Joe also takes Yates to his boarding house, and introduces him to Dr. Carl Hesser (Albert Basserman), a German refugee. Hesser tells him he will improve his ear to the extent that he can pass the army physical in a short time. At the boarding house, Yates becomes especially friendly with Jonsey Jones (Edgar Buchanan), foreman of the shipyards, and his pretty daughter Ruth (Claire Trevor) who is a shipyards welder. He incurs the dislike of Charlie Edmonds (Tom Neal), who is interested in Ruth. In order not to disillusion the boys at the academy, Yates has Jonsey send letters from the army camp, supposedly from him. Finding one of the letters, the jealous Charlie spreads the rumor that Yates is a spy working for the Nazi cause along with the old German doctor, thus inflaming the whole shipyard against him. Learning that Charlie is responsible for the antagonism of his fellow workers, Yates seeks him out and there is a grim fight between the two. During the fight a blow-torch drops and causes a tremendous fire. Charlie is caught in an open hatch and Yates, at the risk of his own life, saves him. He becomes a hero in the eyes of his fellow workers as well as the cadets at the academy. That makes him happy, for the boys had learned that his letters were a hoax and they'd being thinking he was a fake. As a result of the fire, Yates finds that his ear hand been damaged beyond repair. Altough the school leaders and the boys beg him to come back,he and Ruth, now very much in love, feel their place for the duration of the war is on the home-front firing line.—Les Adams <longhorn1939@suddenlink.net>
