- [expecting a stiff shot of whiskey to wash down the trail dust, Rusty is disappointed when Travers pours him a glass of milk]
- Johnny Williams: [chuckling] Come on, partner, drink up!
- Rusty Peters: You gotta give me time. I ain't used to this stuff. I never did taste it except in coffee.
- Johnny Williams: You better tell us who killed those two men, or you'll find yourself dangling from the end of a rope.
- Les Travers: Yeah? Well, I know better. Shootin' at somebody ain't no hangin' offense.
- Johnny Williams: No, but murder is.
- Les Travers: Yeah? Well, I ain't kill nobody. You can't pin anything like that on me!
- Johnny Williams: What's to prevent Rusty and I from saying we saw you do the killing.
- Les Travers: You wouldn't dare pull a trick like that. Why, that's perjury!
- Rusty Peters: Well, you ought to know. You've been lyin' plenty about Stevens.
- Johnny Williams: Make up your mind. Do you want to talk or hang?
- [having been given just a week to pay his mortgage's interest, Travers examines his dead wife's diamond jewelry and sighs]
- Joan Travers: Dad, you're not thinking of selling them. They were Mother's. You can't do that. You've cherished them for years. They're all you have left to remind you of her.
- Les Travers: You're wrong, dear. I still have you.
- Johnny Williams: Say, what's happened to this place? It's all run down. Where's Uncle Ed?
- Rusty Peters: Haven't you heard?
- Johnny Williams: No. Is he dead?
- Rusty Peters: Yeah, some time ago. He was killed in an accident comin' back from the railhead. Neck was broken and his reputation for bein' an honest man at the same time.
- Johnny Williams: What do you mean?
- Rusty Peters: Well, if he hadn't been killed in the accident, he'd a been arrested for embezzlement.
- [first lines]
- [after nodding at Johnny on the trail, a townsman suddenly reverses course and gallops back into town]
- Johnny Williams: Huh. Wonder what's wrong with him, Rebel.
- [last lines]
- Henry Stevens: It's been quite a struggle, but now we're ready to go. This map tells the story.
- Joan Travers: Isn't it wonderful, Dad, that you're finally starting the dam. Just think what it will mean to the country in a couple of years.
- Les Travers: Yes, thanks to Johnny.
- Joan Travers: By the way, where is Johnny?
- Rusty Peters: He's gone.
- Henry Stevens: Gone? Where?
- Rusty Peters: Just gone.
- Joan Travers: Oh, but we didn't get a chance to thank him.
- Rusty Peters: Well, that's why he's gone. He just don't like to be thanked.
- [scene cuts to one showing a lone rider galloping away]
- [to Duke, after the henchman repeatedly shot at what he thought was Johnny's back]
- Johnny Williams: Did ya get him?
- [startled, Duke reaches for his gun, but Johnny beats him to the draw]
- Johnny Williams: Turn around. You're wasting a lot of ammunition on an old dead log aren't you? All right, let's go.
