A breath of fresh air for traditional commercial television was Taylor Sheridan’s Yellowstone, especially in an era when streaming services and binge-worthy content ruled the television landscape.
If you enjoy vintage badass Westerns with lots of revolvers and hard-boiled cowboys, you have probably heard of, if not seen, Paramount’s neo-Western drama series. Fans of the genre will find much to enjoy in this gripping drama series that brings back the glamour of Hollywood’s golden era into the present day.

But before going on to give birth to one of the best TV shows ever, Sheridan, 54, was just an actor, most known for his role in the FX drama series Sons of Anarchy (2008–2010). However, he left Kurt Sutter’s series and later said the experience motivated him to work on Yellowstone.

In 2007, Miley Cyrus was a 14-year-old TV star better known as her character, Hannah Montana, than as singer Miley Cyrus. But much like her onscreen Hannah Montana persona, she felt she was stuck in an identity crisis where people didn’t know the real her. As she explains in a new TikTok, she tried to differentiate the two on her first record — a double album where one disc was titled Hannah Montana 2 and the other was Meet Miley Cyrus. But for as much as she believed in her Meet Miley material,...

It’s been nearly 50 years since Frank Zappa’s celebrated album, Over-Nite Sensation, first debuted. Now, the record is receiving box set treatment: the “super deluxe” Over-Nite Sensation: 50th Anniversary Edition will drop on November 3rd via Zappa Records and UMe.
Released in September 1973, the original Over-Nite Sensation was produced by Zappa and features a group of virtuosic musicians, including Tina Turner and a then-newly-reformed iteration of Zappa’s backing band called The Mothers, which had grown to include a number of jazz greats like Jean-Luc Ponty and George Duke. It came to be one of Zappa’s most commercially-successful releases, bringing his avant-garde sound to a wider audience.
Over-Nite Sensation: 50th Anniversary Edition was produced and compiled by Zappa’s son, Ahmet Zappa, as well as “Zappa Vaultmeister” Joe Travers. It boasts a whopping 57 previously unreleased tracks, including masters, mix outtakes, two live concerts, and more. It’s all packaged as a five-disc set,...

French Montana’s new documentary, For Khadija, debuted at the Tribeca Film Festival on June 16. It looks back on the rapper’s extraordinary story—from emigrating to the Bronx from Morocco and finding his way into the music industry.
“[The doc] has a lot to do with my music,” French told Rolling Stone, “but it’s mostly an immigrant story about a mother that struggled for 20-something years and didn’t see her family to make sure her kids is good.”
French Montana’s thoughts on immigration
“Immigration affects anybody that doesn’t have an equal opportunity — and haven’t done no crime,” he said. “Criminals that go to jail for murder come home and still have a better opportunity than the immigrant that came from another country with a dream of making this land a better land.”
Immigration is the main theme in French’s documentary. But French hopes people who...

The ad campaign for “Father Stu” — before-and-after photos with Mark Wahlberg looking sleazy in a mug shot, then as a clean-cut clergyman glancing up at the heavens — makes you think it’s going to be a movie about the world’s toughest priest. It is, but not in the way you expect. “Father Stu” is based on the true story of Stuart Long, who started out as an amateur boxer, and Wahlberg plays him as an innocent ruffian in shaggy hair and a handlebar mustache who’s grinding away at being a fighter because he doesn’t know what else to do. By the time the film starts, in the ’90s, he is already over the hill: a former Montana Golden Gloves heavyweight champ who can’t find a sponsor, and who walks away from each bout with lingering infections. So he decides, on a whim, to go to L.

Canadian-born actress Alexis Smith (born 1921) would have turned 96 years old today, June 8. Turner Classic Movies is celebrating her birthday by presenting nine of her movies, mostly during her time as a Warner Bros. contract player. In addition to Michael Curtiz's box office hit Night and Day, a highly fictionalized Cole Porter biopic starring Cary Grant as a heterosexual version of the famed gay composer. Night and Day is being shown as part of TCM's Gay Pride Month celebration. Alexis Smith died on June 9, 1993, the day after she turned 72. After her film career petered out in the 1950s, she went on to receive acclaim on the Broadway stage, making sporadic film appearances all the way to the year of her death. Smith's last film appearance was in a minor supporting role in Martin Scorsese's overly genteel period drama The Age of Innocence (1993), starring Daniel Day-Lewis, Michelle Pfeiffer, and Winona Ryder.

Robert Redford movies: TCM shows 'Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid,' 'The Sting' They don't make movie stars like they used to, back in the days of Louis B. Mayer, Jack Warner, and Harry Cohn. That's what nostalgists have been bitching about for the last four or five decades; never mind the fact that movie stars have remained as big as ever despite the demise of the old studio system and the spectacular rise of television more than sixty years ago. This month of January 2015, Turner Classic Movies will be honoring one such post-studio era superstar: Robert Redford. Beginning this Monday evening, January 6, TCM will be presenting 15 Robert Redford movies. Tonight's entries include Redford's two biggest blockbusters, both directed by George Roy Hill and co-starring Paul Newman: Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, which turned Redford, already in his early 30s, into a major film star to rival Rudolph Valentino,...

In A Better World (Sony) Winner of last year’s Best Foreign Film Oscar, this Danish export looks at two fractured families and the effect that the adult world dysfunction has on their two sons, who form an immediate and potentially deadly bond. Director Susanne Bier delivers another powerful work that maintains its drive during the films’ first 2/3, then falters somewhat during the last act. Still, well-worth seeing, and beautifully made. Also available on Blu-ray disc. Bonuses: Deleted scenes; Commentary by Bier and editor Pernille Bech Christensen; Interview with Bier. Widescreen. Dolby and DTS-hd 5.1 surround.
X-men First Class (20th Century Fox) “Origins” film set in the early 1960s, traces the beginnings of Magento and Professor X (played ably here by Michael Fassbender and James McAvoy), and how the once-close friends and colleagues became bitter enemies. First half is slam-bang entertainment at its stylish best,...

A wise man once said, “All I have in this world is my balls and my word, and I don’t break them for nobody.” Okay, it was Tony Montana, but that’s not entirely true in the world of horror, as we’ve seen plenty of so-called “final chapters”, then that promise is broken as we get another sequel…and another sequel. It’s the best marketing ploy a franchise has this deep in the game. Friday the 13th Part IV: The Final Chapter. A Nightmare on Elm Street 6: Freddy’s Dead. Halloween: H20. All liars. So where does this leave one of horror most successful franchise in Saw: The Final Chapter?
It’s game over (perhaps finally), but Saw: The Final Chapter (formerly known as in theaters, Saw 3D) feels a lot like Friday the 13th Part V: A New Beginning. It’ll be the...

With 2010 only a week over, it already feels like best-of and top-ten lists have been pouring in for months, and we’re already tired of them: the ranking, the exclusions (and inclusions), the rules and the qualifiers. Some people got to see films at festivals, others only catch movies on video; and the ability for us, or any publication, to come up with a system to fairly determine who saw what when and what they thought was the best seems an impossible feat. That doesn’t stop most people from doing it, but we liked the fantasy double features we did last year and for our 3rd Writers Poll we thought we'd do it again.
I asked our contributors to pick a single new film they saw in 2010—in theaters or at a festival—and creatively pair it with an old film they saw in 2010 to create a unique double feature.
