When Netflix started taking its originals game seriously — a.k.a. when it started commissioning productions by itself — the surging streaming service quickly earned a prestigious reputation. On the backs of “House of Cards” and “Orange is the New Black,” the over-the-top platform became an immediate awards contender and critical darling.
But over the last 12 months, as Netflix releases more and more original content, there’s been a noticeable dip in the quality of its dramas; a dip that precedes a changing of the guard for the service when it comes to TV’s kingmaker: the Emmys.

The winding tale of Justice League Dark continues. This is one movie that can’t seem to catch a break or gain any momentum. For the longest time, fan favorite filmmaker Guillermo del Toro was attached to bring the project to the big screen. However, like with many of del Toro’s projects in the past, he ultimately had to drop out. Stepping in to take his place was Doug Liman, who hopped on over from the long-gestating Gambit standalone flick.
The film continued its development over the course of the next year and a half. Then, last week, Liman dropped out. It made sense. Liman has another big sci-fi project in the form of Chaos Walking, and he’s also got the impending sequel for the Edge of Tomorrow sequel, Live Die Repeat and Repeat.

“Life” spends its first act building up some big ideas, but eventually unravels into another monster movie in space. The story follows the crew of the International Space Station on a special mission to find evidence of alien life among dirt samples retrieved by a Mars lander. Believe or not, they find it — which is just enough buildup to unleash a serviceable “Alien” knock-off in disguise.
But that’s not the only sci-fi hit to which “Life” owes its existence. Director Daniel Espinosa (“Safe House”) imbues the otherworldly setting with a visual flair right out of the “Gravity” playbook. The movie opens with mission specialist Rory Adams (Ryan Reynolds), who has a penchant for derring-do and always has a one-liner handy, undergoing a spacewalk captured in an ambitious long take. As the camera roves through the zero-gravity corridors of the station, peeking out windows at the black void, we meet the rest of the crew.

The 1990s, however, saw creative stagnation and some of the worst wrestling television in history… until World Championship Wrestling began to beat the WWF in the ratings, turning a skirmish into a full-fledged Monday Night War. Revitalised by a newfound Attitude, Mr. McMahon and his pet Rattlesnake saw off the competition once again. Riding high on the likes of The Dark Knight trilogy, Inception, and Interstellar, Christopher Nolan is one of the biggest filmmakers working today. That, of course, wasn.t always the case, and in 2000, the little known director burst onto the scene with Memento, a twisted indie mystery thriller with a clever hook. Despite only being 15-years-old, and a movie that still totally holds up, Memento is getting a remake, because why not. Ambi Pictures recently acquired the back catalog of Exclusive Media Group, a library that also includes Donnie Darko, Sliding Doors, Cruel Intentions, and hundreds more titles. According to The Hollywood Reporter, following this windfall, they gave a green light to the Memento remake. In a statement, Ambi head Monika Bacardi said: Memento is a masterpiece that leaves audiences guessing not just throughout the film, but long after as well, which is a testament to its daring approach. We...

Patching together portraits of his beloved Portland streets, bits of Shakespeare’s Henry IV via Welles’ tumultuous Chimes at Midnight, and vignettes of a narcoleptic vagabond hustler whose motherless anxieties send him travelling through time and space in shimmeringly nostalgic deep sleep, Gus Van Sant‘s My Own Private Idaho is a wildly original amalgam of cultural references and personal investments that transcend a mere tip of the hat. Riding high in the wake of Drugstore Cowboy‘s Hollywood success, Van Sant convinced River Phoenix and Keanu Reeves, two rising Tinseltown heart-throbs, to take a serious risk, committing themselves, against the loudly voiced opinions of their agents, to a pair of overtly homosexual roles in a film that opens with an off-screen blowjob. After River was awarded the prizes for Best Actor from the Venice International Film Festival, the Independent Spirit Awards and the National Society of Film Critics Awards...

The forty-first season of "Saturday Night Live" kicked off last week without too much of a bang, forgoing performance fireworks for actual whimpers from host/musical guest Miley Cyrus, whose characteristic energy eventually morphed from loudly screaming about drugs to openly weeping about her deceased pets while playing the piano (a genuinely moving, if strange scene that seemed real, out of place and real out of place within the context of the show). How much difference a week makes. Josh Trank’s Fantastic Four once held so much promise. Riding high off the back of Chronicle‘s success, the director had assembled some of the most promising rising stars in the industry in Miles Teller, Michael B. Jordan, Kate Mara and Jamie Bell for a reboot that was designed to Nolanize Marvel’s First Family. Stan Lee and Jack Kirby’s indelible foursome have a long and storied history in the comics, but after much hullabaloo, alleged internal fallouts and reshoots, it’s official: Trank’s Fantastic Four is an unmitigated turkey.
Panned by critics – including our own Sam Woolf – the film is a forgettable, incoherent attempt at re-inventing the superpowered foursome. With Trank’s feature now on an international mission to recoup its initial budget, the possibility of a direct sequel has been put to question, though the director has now claimed that the studio is to blame for Fantastic Four‘s shortcomings.

Back in 1980, the cast of “Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back” was gearing up for an old-fashioned press junket. Riding high on the popularity of “A New Hope,” audiences were clamoring for the second installment. As the only person who knew the big reveal hiding near the end of the story — the other actors were given a dummy script and saw Vader’s declaration only when they first watched the film — Hamill teased out the connection between Luke and Vader without giving anything away. A deft interviewee, Hamill turned a question about his then infant son Nathan into a chance to hint at the future of the Star Wars franchise, including a few nuggets about the original prequels. Twenty years earlier, in the third story, you see how Darth Vader came to power and fell from grace, and how the Obi-Wan character battled with Darth, and why he was forced to wear this mask.
