Some actors’ legacies will always be dominated by one defining role, and for Marlon Brando, it was ironically one he was never expected to have. Brando was initially a breakthrough actor in the 1950s thanks to the realism and emotional honesty that he brought from his experiences on stage to the big screen; his film roles in classics like On the Waterfront and A Streetcar Named Desire captured the intimacy of a New York theater. As detailed in William J. Mann’s excellent biography The Contender, Brando increasingly felt disillusioned by his work in the film industry due to current political issues, even though it still had value to him. Even if he didn’t even accept the Academy Award for Best Actor for his work in Francis Ford Coppola’s The Godfather, he showed that he still enjoyed the role of Don Corleone with his self-reflexive performance in the underrated 1990 comedy The Freshman.

Acting streaks are rare; even the best actors have disappointments in their careers. A fantastic streak can completely change an actor's career, like Matthew McConaughey's stellar 2013-2014 run. A strong streak can make an actor legendary, like Marlon Brando's amazing string of critically acclaimed movies.
Even the greatest actors sometimes star in a few bad movies, so it's rare for an actor to put together a long winning streak. Making two brilliant movies back-to-back is hard enough, and stringing together multiple hits requires a bit of luck. Sometimes it's as much about selecting the right projects as it is about delivering great performances. For example, Brad Pitt had the beginnings of a great streak after Fight Club and Snatch but his next movie, The Mexican, was a complete disappointment. This doesn't diminish his talents as an actor. It just shows how rare great acting streaks are.

There are few movie stars in cinematic history that have changed the way performances are perceived quite like Marlon Brando. After peaking in New York’s theater scene with his breakthrough work on A Streetcar Named Desire, Brando brought a level of emotional sensitivity to his performances that popularized the “method” approach to acting. While “method acting” is itself a somewhat controversial style that is often dismissed as a gimmick, it’s hard not to look at Brando’s resume of classics and argue against his work. Between classic social dramas like On the Waterfront to crime movie masterpieces like The Godfather, Brando’s range was unparalleled. However, the notion that he resembled the dark, brooding anti-heroes he so often portrayed on screen is entirely inaccurate, as Brando was a major prankster who brought a jovial sense of humor to his projects (when he wasn't being difficult), and he really loved farts.

A real-life Curb Your Enthusiasm billboard that recently went up on Santa Monica Boulevard in Los Angeles was graffitied to match Susie Greene’s (Susie Greene) Catch as Caftan billboard that appeared in episode six of the show’s 12th and final season last week.
In the episode titled “The Gettysburg Address,” David gets quite the laugh when he sees Susie’s billboard that she purchased for her new business venture hit by a graffiti artist — two large penises were spray-painted on the billboard.
The Hollywood Reporter learned last week that HBO was planning a marketing scheme to display a real billboard to promote Susie’s business (one without graffiti). “Imagine the traffic jams if we actually had a Susie poster on Santa Monica Boulevard where she was getting double-dosed,” Jeff Schaffer said at the time.

Italy’s Torino Film Festival will celebrate the centennial of Marlon Brando’s birth with a 24-title retrospective of films featuring the groundbreaking two-time Oscar winner, known for his naturalistic acting style and rebellious streak.

Mike Nichols Made His Movie Directorial Debut with ‘Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?’ — and Got Fired
Everyone involved with the film adaptation of “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?” had a lot riding on its success. For star Elizabeth Taylor, this was perhaps her first chance to prove that she could act (certainly the middle-aged Martha was the most demanding role she had ever had). For first-time producer Ernest Lehman, the movie could make or break him as he moved away from writing classics like “North by Northwest” and “Sweet Smell of Success.” And for director Mike Nichols, “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?,” his feature film directorial debut, would either burnish his growing reputation as a boy genius after several smash Broadway hits or prove that he was out of his depth.

By respectively receiving Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor Oscar nominations for “American Fiction,” Jeffrey Wright and Sterling K. Brown made history as the first two Black male cast mates to compete in separate categories for the same film. They are also the eighth pair of performers to earn academy recognition for playing brothers and constitute the 28th case of Oscar-nominated sibling characters overall. Check out our photo gallery of this and the previous 27 examples, which date as far back as 1948.
At this point, the only two people who have won Oscars for playing siblings in the same film are “A Streetcar Named Desire” cast mates Vivien Leigh (Best Actress) and Kim Hunter (Best Supporting Actress). Best Actor champ Lee Marvin can technically also be counted alongside them since he was honored for portraying twin brothers in “Cat Ballou.”

Throughout the 96-year history of the Academy Awards, the amount of acting lineups consisting only of first-time nominees has reached 37, or about 10% of the overall total. While that number may not seem high in a general sense, these cases actually outnumber those exclusively involving veteran contenders by a ratio of three to one. However, although this list expanded as recently as 2023, rookie-only acting lineups are gradually becoming less common than veteran-only ones, the amount of which has nearly doubled within the last dozen years.
Whereas 75% of veteran-only acting quintets have involved lead performers rather than supporting ones, almost the exact opposite is true of lineups full of newcomers. For instance, only one existing case of the former kind concerns supporting actresses, whereas the same category has produced 15 rookie-only rosters. The last such group consisted of 2000 winner Angelina Jolie and nominees Toni Collette (“The Sixth Sense”), Catherine Keener (“Being John Malkovich...

Among the various distinctions “Everything Everywhere All at Once” incurred by winning seven awards at the 95th Oscars was becoming the first film in a dozen years (and ninth overall) to conquer both supporting acting categories. This rare occurrence involved Ke Huy Quan and Jamie Lee Curtis preventing their respective “The Banshees of Inisherin” competitors from accomplishing the same goal, as the sets of featured nominees from “Belfast” and “The Power of the Dog” had both failed to do one year earlier. Now, two more pairs of cast mates – who happen to hail from the two highest-grossing live action movies of 2023 – are gunning for entry into this exclusive club.

Richard Linklater’s ongoing fascination with the passage of time has seen him use lengthy shooting schedules to make some of the most beloved independent films of the last quarter century. He famously spent a decade shooting “Boyhood” in order to accurately showcase the process of his actors aging, and the 18-year gap between “Before Sunrise” and “Before Midnight” (with “Before Sunset” coming in between) allowed him to capture a relationship from its initial spark to the domesticity of marriage. But his upcoming adaptation of Stephen Sondheim’s “Merrily We Roll Along” might be his most ambitious undertaking yet.
Sondheim’s musical — which has a book by George Furth and is based on George S. Kaufman and Moss Hart’s play of the same name — famously tells the story of three friends whose lives change over the course of 20 years as they pursue diverging career paths in show business.

In the 95-year history of the Academy Awards, 88 films have each received nominations for both Best Actor and Best Actress. Although there have been 19 cases of two or more movies doing so in a single year, there hasn’t been such an occurrence since 1996, when both lead lineups included performers from “Dead Man Walking” and “Leaving Las Vegas.” However, according to Gold Derby’s late-stage 2024 Oscar nominations predictions, that nearly three-decade gap is set to soon be closed by costar pairs from “Killers of the Flower Moon” and “Maestro.”

Many actors, including Jack Nicholson and Johnny Depp, cite Brando as a chief influence in their careers, admiring his ability to genuinely transform into his characters. Brando's performances in films like "The Godfather" and "On the Waterfront" showcase his exceptional talent and emotional depth, earning him deserved acclaim and awards.

Brando was widely known for adapting the Stanislavski system, also known as method acting. His early film work in the 1950s was massively influential, with movies like A Streetcar Named Desire and On the Waterfront popularizing his naturalistic performances and revolutionizing the film industry. Before the 2023 Academy Awards, only “A Streetcar Named Desire” and “Network” had won three Oscars for acting. The former won its hat trick in 1952 with Vivien Leigh taking home Best Actress, Karl Malden claiming Best Supporting Actor, and Kim Hunter winning Best Supporting Actress. Then, in 1976, “Network” won Best Actor for Peter Finch (posthumously), Best Actress for Faye Dunaway, and Best Supporting Actress for Beatrice Straight. Those two movies stood alone as the only pictures to win three acting Oscars until 2023 when “Everything Everywhere All at Once” produced wins for Michelle Yeoh (Best Actress), Jamie Lee Curtis (Best Supporting Actress), and Ke Huy Quan (Best Supporting Actor). These three films now have the joint-highest number of acting wins in Oscars history as no film has ever managed to reign victorious in all four acting categories.
Plenty of movies have had four nominations for acting, including “American Hustle” and “Everything Everywhere All at Once.

Despite being one of the greatest actors of all-time, Marlon Brando was a risky actor to cast in the early 1970s. Brando had amassed the reputation of being a brilliant, but notoriously difficult-to-work-with actor, thanks to his experiences with Elia Kazan on the groundbreaking dramas On the Waterfront and A Streetcar Named Desire. No one could doubt Brando’s brilliance, but that didn’t mean that his personality made him very fun to work with. Even when Brando seemed “uncastable” due to the stories circulating about his off-screen activities, he managed to have a major comeback role in 1972 when he took on perhaps his most beloved role as Don Vito Corleone in Francis Ford Coppola’s gangster film masterpiece The Godfather. Working with Brando was in Coppola’s favor, but that didn’t mean that the notorious The Wild One star didn’t present some difficulties on set. In fact,...

(Welcome to Did They Get It Right?, a series where we look at Oscars categories from yesteryear and examine whether the Academy's winners stand the test of time.)
With all the milestones that have occurred throughout the 95-year history of the Academy Awards, there are still plenty of accomplishments that have not transpired. No Black woman has ever been nominated for Best Director, and no Black person has ever won that category. No animated film has ever won Best Picture, and no documentary has ever been nominated. I do believe all of these things will eventually happen in the future. As the diversity of the industry steadily increases and Academy membership gradually expands, these sorts of things must happen as time moves on.
But there is one thing I remain skeptical about when it comes to Oscars milestones. It has nothing to do with representation, nor does it have to...

Vivien Leigh's career spanned four decades, with iconic roles in films like "Gone with the Wind" and "A Streetcar Named Desire." Leigh was celebrated for her looks but considered herself first and foremost a serious actor. She had incredible chemistry onscreen with her then-husband Laurence Olivier, and their performances together were highly regarded.
Vivien Leigh is a star of old Hollywood, and her career as a leading lady spanned four decades, in which she frequently delivered award-winning performances. Born in British India, Leigh began her career in both theater productions and films. First appearing in four smaller parts in 1935, Leigh had her breakthrough in the 1937's Fire Over England as Cynthia, where she also began a much talked about affair with Laurence Olivier which resulted in a 20-year marriage.
In 1939, Leigh received the role that would define her career, Scarlett O'Hara in the epic, famously long Gone with the Wind.

There's a piece of advice that every writer gets at some point in their career, and it goes like this: "Write what you know."
It's not bad advice if you don't take it too literally. "Write what you know" doesn't mean that you should only write about your own autobiographical experiences, it means that when you do write from experience you'll probably be able to write more truthfully, more meaningfully, and in more detail than if you had to make it all up from scratch. Even if you write about strange new planets filled with creatures totally unlike anything found on Earth, you're probably better off finding an angle that speaks somehow to your personal interests, your beliefs, or your memories.
The irony of course is that as writers keep on writing, eventually "what they know" the most about is being a writer. You may have noticed that a whole...

Marlon Brando's film "Reflections in a Golden Eye" from the 1960s is briefly referenced in Francis Ford Coppola's "Apocalypse Now" through a photograph of Brando's character in the movie. Francis Ford Coppola actually worked on the screenplay for "Reflections in a Golden Eye," which was directed by John Huston, before his collaboration with Brando on "The Godfather." Brando's career took a turn in the 1960s with box-office flops, but he later made a comeback with "A Dry White Season" in 1989, almost a decade after "Apocalypse Now."
A brief scene in Francis Ford Coppola's Apocalypse Now referenced the acclaimed director's first Hollywood link to the celebrated actor Marlon Brando. Although Coppola was known primarily for his masterful directorial efforts in The Godfather and Apocalypse Now, he was also a skilled screenwriter, getting some of his first career opportunities as a co-writer for notable films such as 1970's Patton. Vivien Leigh was the two-time Oscar winner who made only a handful of films before her untimely death in 1967 at the age of 53. Yet several of those titles remain classics. Let’s take a look back at 10 of her greatest films, ranked worst to best.
Born in British India, Leigh appeared in a number of roles on both the stage and screen in England, including a production of “Hamlet” opposite her husband, Laurence Olivier.
She came to international attention after landing the coveted role of Scarlet O’Hara in David O. Selznick’s massive adaptation of Margaret Mitchell‘s bestseller “Gone with the Wind” (1939). Leigh was far from the first choice to embody the headstrong Southern belle who pines after a married man (Leslie Howard) while wedding another (Clark Gable) against the backdrop of the Civil War. Yet the relatively unknown thespian beat out the likes of Bette Davis, Claudette Colbert,...

She reteams with the latter’s director, Yorgos Lanthimos, for Searchlight Pictures’ “Poor Things.” The film, which is out in US theaters on Dec. 8, follows Stone as Bella Baxter — a woman brought back to life by a scientist (Willem Dafoe) and subsequently goes on a journey of self-discovery, meeting a variety of people along the way including a lawyer (Mark Ruffalo) and a potential suitor (Ramy Youssef).

Gillian Anderson paid tribute to Terence Davies, the British filmmaker who directed one of her most acclaimed performances for “The House of Mirth,” crediting him with giving her “my first ‘proper’ film job.” Davies died on Oct. 7 at the age of 77 following a short illness.
“The House of Mirth,” an adaptation of Edith Wharton’s novel of the same name, saw Anderson portray Lily Bart, a tragic socialite whose quest for love and financial security leads her to ruin. Davies wrote the script, in addition to directing the film.
The role came to Anderson at a time when she was best known for portraying FBI Special Agent Dana Scully in the paranormal series “The X-Files.” The film provided an opportunity for the actor to showcase her range with a meaty role in a period piece. It was also good news for Davies, with “The House of Mirth” representing a significant...

Gladiator 2 director Ridley Scott reveals he was convinced to cast Paul Mescal as the lead in his long-awaited sequel to the original epic historical drama after seeing his performance in the miniseries Normal People.
Speaking with Total Film for its latest issue, Scott expounded on his impression of Mescal's showing in Normal People, the acclaimed Irish romantic psychological drama where he plays the central character Connell Waldron. Though Scott admitted Normal People isn't really his cup of tea, he was blown away by Mescal's portrayal of Connell in the series and had him on his radar for the Gladiator sequel from then on. "I watched Normal People. It’s not my kind of show, but I saw four episodes in a row – boom, boom, boom. I was thinking, 'Who the hell is this Paul Mescal?'" he said. Irish heartthrob and "Normal People" star Paul Mescal has been one to watch in recent years. Heralded as an up-and-coming talent with a breakthrough Hulu series under his belt, he was always going places. And 2023 seems to be the year he's reached the top of the mountain after being announced as a surprise nominee for best actor at the 2023 Oscars for his moving turn as single dad Calum in Charlotte Wells's father-daughter drama "Aftersun." Although he lost out to Brendan Fraser, the accolade has cemented his position as an A-list star.
Mescal's acting career started mostly on stage, starring in the likes of "The Great Gatsby," "A Midsummer Night's Dream," and the world premiere of "Asking For It." However, it was his 2020 television debut in "Normal People" that catapulted him into the public eye overnight. Playing Connell in the BBC adaptation of Sally Rooney's novel caught the attention...

Psycho destroyed censorship norms of the time, which set the stage for future subversive horror films. Psycho arrived during the decline of the Hays Code and pushed boundaries in ways not experienced in films. Hitchcock's ability to finance and make the film he wanted with minimal interference allowed Psycho to become a huge hit.
Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho was the subject of controversy when it opened in 1960. Though technically a thriller, it redefined the horror genre in one fell swoop and created the template for the slasher movies of the 1970s and 80s. Today, its influence can be seen in horror films like X and Pearl, and in many ways it still defines the subversive potential of the genre.
Yet, after more than six decades, it can be hard to see what the fuss was all about. Psycho's sex and violence -- shockingly intense at the time -- are very much the norm today.

Years after his death in 2003, two-time Oscar-winning director Elia Kazan remains both an influential and controversial figure, respected and reviled in equal measure. Let’s take a look back at 15 of his greatest films, ranked worst to best.
Kazan started his career as a stage actor, soon transitioning into directing. He mounted several landmark productions, including the original run of “A Streetcar Named Desire.” Throughout his career he received three Tony awards for Best Director of a Play: “All My Sons” in 1947, “Death of a Salesman” in 1949, and “J.B.” in 1959.
He transitioned into filmmaking with “A Tree Grows in Brooklyn” (1945). Two years later, he won his first Oscar for Best Director for “Gentleman’s Agreement” (1947), which also took home Best Picture and Best Supporting Actress (Celeste Holm). A taboo-shattering drama about antisemitism, the film established Kazan as a director drawn towards contemporary, hot-button topics.

The second David Bowie World Fan Convention hit New York in June, featuring some of David Bowie’s closest collaborators in music, film, and fashion. Vocalist, songwriter, model, and actor Ava Cherry sang on some of Bowie’s most transformative records, and changed his outlook on music, fashion, and nightlife. From 1974 to 1978, Cherry was one-third of Bowie’s vocal backing trio, appearing onstage, in the studio, and on all TV appearances. Cherry and Bowie’s relationship was even closer than that, beginning as lovers, and enduring as friends.
According to the autobiography All That Glitters, written by Cherry and Lisa Torem, Ava was raised in Chicago, taking a job at Hugh Hefner’s Playboy Mansion when she was 17 years old, before moving to New York and working at the nightclub Genesis. This is where she met Bowie, who asked her to provide backing vocals on an upcoming tour in Japan.

Parady died Wednesday in the Norfolk, Virginia, home of her son, Jonathan Peverall, he told The Hollywood Reporter. She had been dealing with a brain tumor, and he had set up a GoFundMe page to help with expenses.
Parady and former NFL star Merlin Olsen were introduced as wife and husband Alice and Jonathan Garvey on the Michael Landon-created Little House on the Prairie during the season-four opening episode, “Castoffs,” in September 1977.
On the sixth-season installment “May We Make Them Proud,” which aired as a two-hour episode during a sweeps ratings period in February 1980, Alice races into the School for the Blind, which has caught fire, to save some children inside, including Mary and Adam’s (Melissa Sue Anderson,...

“Everything Everywhere All at Once” last year made Oscar history by becoming just the third film ever to win three awards in acting categories — Michelle Yeoh (Best Actress), Jamie Lee Curtis (Best Supporting Actress), and Ke Huy Quan (Best Supporting Actor). “A Streetcar Named Desire” (1952) and “Network” (1977) also pulled off this triple play
No film has ever won all four acting prizes but plenty have contended across the board, with the most recent being “American Hustle” in 2014. “Network,” “Mrs. Miniver” in 1943, “From Here to Eternity” in 1954, “Peyton Place” in 1958, “Bonnie and Clyde” in 1968 and “The Godfather: Part 2” in 1975 all snagged five acting nominations in total.
So, how about this year? Are there any movies that could match that haul of five nominations? Or even become the first picture to win all four acting Oscars? Let’s take a look through this year’s early contenders to see which movies...

It's been ten years this week since Blue Jasmine arrived in theaters, kickstarting one of the most unwavering award sweeps in living memory. After a period where she dedicated most of her attention to the theater, Cate Blanchett returned to big screen leading lady status with Woody Allen's San Francisco-set Madoff-inspired spin on A Streetcar Named Desire. Her Jasmine is a modern Blanche Dubois bedecked in Chanel, a showcase for thespian pyrotechnics so immense nobody can be left indifferent. No wonder so many count the performance as Blanchett's best and one of the top Best Actress winners of the 21st century. I understand and even grasp the grandeur that enchanted Oscar voters, critics, cinephiles everywhere.
And yet, I can't deny a certain skepticism when faced with the achievement itself, finding it highlights many of the issues I often have with Blanchett on screen. Maybe I am a Blanchett agnostic…...

“Barbie” is a box office smash, along with its acclaim from critics and audiences alike. If you follow the social media chatter and the general feeling from most pundits, it could be a viable awards contender for Warner Bros. One category being debated is where the screenplay by Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach would be able to compete — whether in original or adapted screenplay. The answer lies in how the WGA classifies it and whether the Academy could or would overrule that choice.
Variety confirms there are ongoing conversations with strategists and Warner Bros regarding where “Barbie” would compete at next year’s ceremony.
On the title cards, it reads “Based on ‘Barbie’ by Mattel,” which is, of course, a toy company. At the same time, there have been multiple CGI films and TV series featuring the fashion doll since its debut in the late 1980s (42 to be precise). This...
