Before he even had a dozen movies on his directing resume, Elia Kazan had seen nine different actors to Oscar victories. Nearly seven decades later, he remains one of only two filmmakers associated with that many or more winning performances (along with William Wyler) and one of four responsible for at least one victor in each of the four acting categories. Check out our complete photo gallery of Oscar-winning turns in Kazan films, which also includes a rundown of the unsuccessful nominees directed by him.
Between 1945 and 1976, Kazan directed 19 narrative feature films, 13 of which earned a collective total of 59 Oscar nominations and 21 wins. Prior to his death in 2003, he was personally recognized seven times across three categories, winning Best Director for “Gentleman’s Agreement” (1948) and “On the Waterfront” (1955). He also received an honorary award in 1999 “in appreciation of a long, distinguished and unparalleled career.”

Some actors’ legacies will always be dominated by one defining role, and for Marlon Brando, it was ironically one he was never expected to have. Brando was initially a breakthrough actor in the 1950s thanks to the realism and emotional honesty that he brought from his experiences on stage to the big screen; his film roles in classics like On the Waterfront and A Streetcar Named Desire captured the intimacy of a New York theater. As detailed in William J. Mann’s excellent biography The Contender, Brando increasingly felt disillusioned by his work in the film industry due to current political issues, even though it still had value to him. Even if he didn’t even accept the Academy Award for Best Actor for his work in Francis Ford Coppola’s The Godfather, he showed that he still enjoyed the role of Don Corleone with his self-reflexive performance in the underrated 1990 comedy The Freshman.

Acting streaks are rare; even the best actors have disappointments in their careers. A fantastic streak can completely change an actor's career, like Matthew McConaughey's stellar 2013-2014 run. A strong streak can make an actor legendary, like Marlon Brando's amazing string of critically acclaimed movies.
Even the greatest actors sometimes star in a few bad movies, so it's rare for an actor to put together a long winning streak. Making two brilliant movies back-to-back is hard enough, and stringing together multiple hits requires a bit of luck. Sometimes it's as much about selecting the right projects as it is about delivering great performances. For example, Brad Pitt had the beginnings of a great streak after Fight Club and Snatch but his next movie, The Mexican, was a complete disappointment. This doesn't diminish his talents as an actor. It just shows how rare great acting streaks are.

There are few movie stars in cinematic history that have changed the way performances are perceived quite like Marlon Brando. After peaking in New York’s theater scene with his breakthrough work on A Streetcar Named Desire, Brando brought a level of emotional sensitivity to his performances that popularized the “method” approach to acting. While “method acting” is itself a somewhat controversial style that is often dismissed as a gimmick, it’s hard not to look at Brando’s resume of classics and argue against his work. Between classic social dramas like On the Waterfront to crime movie masterpieces like The Godfather, Brando’s range was unparalleled. However, the notion that he resembled the dark, brooding anti-heroes he so often portrayed on screen is entirely inaccurate, as Brando was a major prankster who brought a jovial sense of humor to his projects (when he wasn't being difficult), and he really loved farts.

Now that the Oscar winners are known, we can determine the other winners: the studios’ and distributors’ strategic release decisions that impacted results.
Some may reflect genius or gut instinct; others are timing and preparation creating luck. In each case, distribution (or the lack thereof) played a significant role in positioning the films for success — but none of them could be considered a template.
Surprisingly, the universal non-factor appeared to be SAG strike, which constrained promotion. “Oppenheimer” completed most cast appearances in time, while “Killers of the Flower Moon” had press stockpiled from Cannes. The French “Anatomy of a Fall” was unaffected.
“The Holdovers,” along with “Priscilla,” took the biggest chances with their October releases. Both made platform debuts on the same day. Sofia Coppola’s biopic showed a faster response, but Alexander Payne’s film found awards success (as well as a near-equal box office haul and bigger home...

When the winners of the 96th Academy Awards are announced on Sunday, Mar. 10, “Oppenheimer” will become one of the winningest films of all time with eight trophies. This final tally is derived from our official odds with nearly 8,000 experts, editors and users logging their predictions for the champions in 23 categories. See a complete list of predicted winners organized by film below.
If it does indeed take home eight Oscars, “Oppenheimer” would tie with only eight other films that have won eight trophies. Those movies are a veritable list of classics: “Gone with the Wind,” “From Here to Eternity,” “On the Waterfront,” “My Fair Lady,” “Cabaret,” “Gandhi,” “Amadeus” and “Slumdog Millionaire.” Amongst “Oppenheimer’s” awards will be Best Picture, Director for Christopher Nolan, two acting prizes for Cillian Murphy and Robert Downey Jr. and four other design and craft categories.

As the expectation of an “Oppenheimer” steamroller at the Academy Awards this coming Sunday rises seemingly by the day, it’s worth looking at some of the Oscar juggernauts of the past and guessing where the film will fall in terms of number of victories. It’s possible the movie could even score a double-digit total, and if it does, that would elevate it into some very rarified air.
While it could conceivably win as many as 13 statuettes based on its 13 nominations, “Oppenheimer” is obviously highly unlikely to sweep every category. It probably won’t, for instance, take home the trophies for costume design or for makeup and hairstyling. When you think of the Father of the Atomic Bomb, after all, you don’t necessarily envision what a sharp dresser he was or how perfectly coiffed. I’m also predicting the film will lose at least one other of the...

The 2024 Oscar race is on, and one film has the potential to accomplish a feat that hasn’t happened in 64 years. “Oppenheimer” leads the nominations with 13, and it’s on track to win several of those categories. If Christopher Nolan‘s epic claims Best Picture, Best Actor (Cillian Murphy) and Best Supporting Actor (Robert Downey Jr.), it will be the first time since 1960 that the same film (“Ben-Hur”) has won those three exact categories. And it would be only the fourth time it’s ever happened.

Marlon Brando is both one of the greatest actors in the history of cinema and a notoriously erratic Hollywood star who earned a toxic reputation based on how difficult he was to work with. Brando changed the nature of film acting forever with his grounded performance in On the Waterfront, an acclaimed role that earned him the Academy Award for Best Actor; however, Brando's opinion on the superficiality of the industry had soured to the point that he actually refused to accept his subsequent win in the same category for his comeback performance as Don Coreleone in The Godfather. While his extensive career led to many feuds and disputes, Brando had an understandable reason for disliking his experience working with the silent film star Charlie Chaplin.

Italy’s Torino Film Festival will celebrate the centennial of Marlon Brando’s birth with a 24-title retrospective of films featuring the groundbreaking two-time Oscar winner, known for his naturalistic acting style and rebellious streak.
The Brando retro will be “the backbone” of the fest, according to its new artistic director, Italian actor/director Giulio Base. Accordingly, an image of Brando – photographed when he was shooting Bernardo Bertolucci’s “Last Tango in Paris” – is featured on the poster for the fest’s upcoming 42nd edition, which will run Nov. 22-30.
Torino is Italy’s preeminent event for young directors and indie cinema, and is where Matteo Garrone and Paolo Sorrentino screened their first works. The festival’s lineup will be announced at a later date.

Just 30 minutes after final voting for the Screen Actors Guild Awards wrapped up, I made a last-minute switch in my best actress prediction — from Lily Gladstone in “Killers of the Flower Moon” to Emma Stone in “Poor Things.” Let this be a lesson: Second-guessing yourself is seldom a good idea.
Lily Gladstone made history as the first Native American and Indigenous person to clinch an individual SAG Award for her portrayal of Mollie Burkhart, an Osage woman, in Martin Scorsese’s gripping crime saga. With a lead actress (drama) Golden Globe and a SAG Award now under her belt, Gladstone’s award-season momentum continues to be formidable. Historically, only seven performers have failed to win the Oscar after winning the unique combination of Globe and SAG:
1995: Lauren Bacall (“The Mirror Has Two Faces”) lost to Juliette Binoche 2001: Russell Crowe (“A Beautiful Mind”) lost to Denzel Washington (“Training Day...

Since the beginning of the Academy Awards in the late 1920s, Hollywood filmmakers have been making socially conscious films. Many of the best of those have scored the film town’s top honor — Oscar best picture.
This year, that winner could be “Oppenheimer,” a film that boldly and starkly dramatizes the creation of man’s most dangerous invention: atomic weapons.
It could be “Killers of the Flower Moon,” a film that brought a lost and dreadful piece of American history into the sunlight of the Cannes Film Festival and ultimately the spotlights of awards season.
It could be either “Barbie” or “Poor Things,” two of the wildest, most colorful and inventive investigations of feminist and/or post-feminist womanhood to ever hit the big screen.
It could be “American Fiction,” a wry and witty look at Black American middle-class identity and family relations under preposterous, dispiriting cultural pressures.

By respectively receiving Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor Oscar nominations for “American Fiction,” Jeffrey Wright and Sterling K. Brown made history as the first two Black male cast mates to compete in separate categories for the same film. They are also the eighth pair of performers to earn academy recognition for playing brothers and constitute the 28th case of Oscar-nominated sibling characters overall. Check out our photo gallery of this and the previous 27 examples, which date as far back as 1948.
At this point, the only two people who have won Oscars for playing siblings in the same film are “A Streetcar Named Desire” cast mates Vivien Leigh (Best Actress) and Kim Hunter (Best Supporting Actress). Ryan Gosling's two favorite films, On the Waterfront and Step Brothers, couldn't be more different from each other. On the Waterfront is a classic film that delves into the struggle of the working man and the corrupt power dynamics at play. Step Brothers is a bonkers comedy about two adult men who act like children and eventually become best friends.
Ryan Gosling has been in the public consciousness for decades. This year, following his turn as Ken in the smash Barbie movie, he's looking at a possible Oscar for Best Supporting Actor. Bradley Cooper’s “Maestro” about the composer/musicians/conductor extraordinaire Leonard Bernstein is in contention for seven Oscars including three for Cooper. We’ll have to wait until the Academy Awards on March 10 to see how “Maestro” does.
But did you know that Bernstein received an Oscar nomination for his evocative and powerful score for the 1954 classic “On the Waterfront”? And just what score won that year? Veteran Dimitri Tiomkin’s “The High and the Mighty.”
Bernstein was also a powerhouse on television. According to LeonardBernstein.com, he “came of age artistically as television became part of everyday life and he immediately saw the potential to share and explore music with the mass audience. A generation of Americans appreciate music because of Bernstein.” His CBS series “Leonard Bernstein’s Young People’s Concerts with the New York Philharmonic” debuted Jan. 18, 1958, just two weeks after he became the Music Director for the Philharmonic.

In the 1995 movie "Waterworld," Kevin Costner was the draw in more ways than one. To much of the audience, he was still the glamorous movie star who had managed to pull off a blockbuster "Robin Hood" movie despite his inability to successfully nail an English accent. To others, he seemed like he might be a potential trainwreck on the verge of derailment. "Waterworld" had fallen victim to many behind-the-scenes tales of sinking sets, director fights, and Costner rewriting the script to make himself look better. Ultimately, for one reason or another, enough people were curious about the film that it turned a profit. However difficult he may have been behind the scenes, the star turned out to still have it.
Within the movie, however, the person everyone wants to see is Enola, a nine year-old girl whose back tattoo features an encoded map to the last bit of dry land on a post-climate change world.

Kieran Culkin is in Park City, Utah, for the Sundance Film Festival, but he’s still delivering mic drop moments on stage much like he did when he cleaned up at the recent Golden Globes, Critics Choice Awards and Emmys.
Culkin joined his A Real Pain collaborators at the Eccles Theater on Saturday afternoon for the world premiere of the film, directed by Jesse Eisenberg and starring the filmmaker alongside Culkin, Will Sharpe and Jennifer Grey. The plot follows mismatched cousins David and Benji who reunite for a tour through Poland to honor their beloved grandmother.
After the credits rolled, the film got a standing ovation and the energy kept flowing through the Q&a with a slew of amusing moments. Top of the list is when Culkin described what it was like to work with and for Eisenberg. “There was a pretty good rapport right away,” said the Succession star.

Despite being one of the greatest actors of all-time, Marlon Brando was a risky actor to cast in the early 1970s. Brando had amassed the reputation of being a brilliant, but notoriously difficult-to-work-with actor, thanks to his experiences with Elia Kazan on the groundbreaking dramas On the Waterfront and A Streetcar Named Desire. No one could doubt Brando’s brilliance, but that didn’t mean that his personality made him very fun to work with. Even when Brando seemed “uncastable” due to the stories circulating about his off-screen activities, he managed to have a major comeback role in 1972 when he took on perhaps his most beloved role as Don Vito Corleone in Francis Ford Coppola’s gangster film masterpiece The Godfather. Working with Brando was in Coppola’s favor, but that didn’t mean that the notorious The Wild One star didn’t present some difficulties on set. In fact,...

Kurt Russell didn't know he was rumored to play Jor-El in Superman: Legacy and joked about living up to the role once played by the iconic Marlon Brando. Brando's portrayal of Jor-El in Superman: The Movie helped promote and give the project its much-needed gravitas back in 1978. Brando was paid $3.7 million for just under 20 minutes of screen time, but was considered worth it by director Richard Donner.

The Black List announced the top unproduced screenplays of the year on Monday, December 11.
The “most liked” scripts include 76 feature screenplays by 80 writers, selected by more than 375 film executives. In the 19th edition of the annual list, the topics range from a Tom Hanks meta satire to a time-traveling couple who try to fall out of love. The making of ill-fated Broadway production “Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark,” a Patsy Cline biopic, and the true story behind the feud between Elia Kazan and Arthur Miller are also among the selected scripts.
After Todd Haynes helmed The Black List alum Samy Burch’s “May December” script, leading to multiple Golden Globe nominations, this year’s crop of best scripts is all the more essential following the writers strike.

Russell responded in an interview with ComicBook.com:
Yeah! Yeah, I'll take on Marlon Brando!

Since 2012, revered filmmaker Martin Scorsese has belonged to a select group of three-time Best Director Golden Globe winners that grew to include six members when Steven Spielberg took last year’s prize for “The Fabelmans.” Over a decade later, the ever-active octogenarian has a strong chance at rising above his fellow triple champs by achieving another directing victory for “Killers of the Flower Moon,” thus following Elia Kazan as the second quadruple honoree in this category’s 81-year history. Since this would be his 10th time competing here, he would also join Spielberg in the rare distinction of having double-digit directing mentions.
Scorsese earned his first Golden Globe Award in 2003 for “Gangs of New York” (on his sixth bid) and was then further lauded for “The Departed” (2007) and “Hugo” (2012). His remaining half dozen directing notices came for his work on “Raging Bull” (1981), “Goodfellas” (1991), “The Age of Innocence” (1994), “Casino” (1996), “The Aviator...

The greatest film score of 2023 isn’t eligible for an Academy Award. That’s because Leonard Bernstein composed it between 1944 and 1977, multiple pieces that collectively form the musical backdrop of “Maestro,” Bradley Cooper’s film about the 20th century American composer-conductor.
The classical excerpts functioning as dramatic score include Bernstein’s ballets “Fancy Free” and “Facsimile,” parts of his Broadway scores for “West Side Story” and “Candide,” his opera “A Quiet Place,” music for the film “On the Waterfront,” portions of his second and third symphonies as well as his “Mass” and “Chichester Psalms.”
“I think of the score as the co-star of the film,” says the composer’s oldest daughter, Jamie Bernstein. “We knew that Bradley wanted to use our dad’s music in the score, but I don’t think, in the beginning, we even grasped how much of a presence it would wind up having in the film.

“We didn’t need dialogue. We had faces,” proclaimed former silent film queen Norma Desmond (Gloria Swanson) in Billy Wilder’s 1950 masterwork “Sunset Boulevard.” One of the greatest faces of the era belonged to French actor Albert Dieudonne who starred in Abel Gance’s breathtaking 1927 epic “Napoleon.” With this dark eyes, distinct nose and rock star style hair, Dieudonne channels the infamous French military leader and emperor who conquered most of Europe in the early 19th century until his disastrous 1812 invasion of Russia. Exiled to Elba in 1814, he emerged once again and suffered a massive defeat at Waterloo in 1815. He died in exile six years later at the age of 51.
Dieudonne commands the 5 ½ hour film restored by Kevin Brownlow which features the jaw-dropping triptych finale that is as exciting now as it was 96 years ago. BFI states that the film is “monumental and visionary, the story’s chapters play out...

Marlon Brando is one of the most acclaimed actors in the history of cinema, but you’d be hard-pressed to find someone saying he was also one of the easiest to work with. While Brando has more than earned his reputation thanks to his performances in films like On the Waterfront and The Godfather, his off-camera behavior has put a damper on an otherwise mythical career. Refusing to memorize lines, halting production until his eccentric list of demands had been met, arriving on set late and without any preparation (assuming he even showed up)… all common grievances those who collaborated with him had to endure in the name of great art. His resumé includes some of the best films ever made, but also plenty that underwent lengthy (and often arduous) productions, for which Brando shoulders part of the blame. One of the most noteworthy examples is One-Eyed Jacks, a 1961 Western...

When Bradley Cooper’s sophomore directorial outfit Maestro, an ambitious and extravagant Leonard Bernstein biopic, debuted at Venice, none of the film’s stars or crew made it on to the red carpet. SAG was 51 days deep into its strike against the studios.
The experience of observing the premiere and subsequent raves from afar had “actually been better than usual,” two-time Oscar nominee and Maestro DoP Matthew Libatique told Deadline. Libatique was calling into us at Poland’s EnergaCamerimage Film Festival, where Maestro is playing in the main cinematography-focused competition.
“It’s actually a lot of work when promoting a film. I’ve always been a fan of just putting the work out there and letting people decide whether or not they like it without me saying anything,” he added.
Maestro tells the complex love story of Leonard Bernstein and Felicia Montealegre Cohn Bernstein (Carey Mulligan) — a story that spans over 30 years.

(Welcome to Did They Get It Right?, a series where we look at Oscars categories from yesteryear and examine whether the Academy's winners stand the test of time.)
With all the milestones that have occurred throughout the 95-year history of the Academy Awards, there are still plenty of accomplishments that have not transpired. No Black woman has ever been nominated for Best Director, and no Black person has ever won that category. No animated film has ever won Best Picture, and no documentary has ever been nominated. I do believe all of these things will eventually happen in the future. As the diversity of the industry steadily increases and Academy membership gradually expands, these sorts of things must happen as time moves on.
But there is one thing I remain skeptical about when it comes to Oscars milestones. It has nothing to do with representation, nor does it have to...

After four months, the Sag-Aftra film and television union has reached a tentative deal, but we may be waiting a while for the art itself to triumph
It’s over. The stream of sweatshirted and placard-wielding Instagram no-filter/no-makeup posts from stars is at an end. The Sag-Aftra film and television actors’ strike in Hollywood is paused after four months, with a tentative deal giving actors larger minimum-pay increases, a streaming bonus and “consent and compensation” provisions against AI, although how exactly this last is to be enforced remains to be seen. For those who had thought of Hollywood as the very epitome of free-marketeerism, the spectacle of an actual strike, which remained reasonably popular and un-demonised in the press, and which produced a result, is quite startling. Especially as British Equity doesn’t have this kind of power.

Thanks to Priscilla and Elvis, films about Elvis Presley, the “King of Rock ’n’ Roll,” are finally getting the attention that their subject always wanted. Although Presley is one of the most culturally significant musicians of all time, the films that he starred in don’t exactly live up to that reputation. Sure, Jailhouse Rock, Blue Hawaii, Speedway, and Spinout among others gave Presley the chance to rattle off a few iconic musical numbers. However, as films they fall well below any reasonable expectations of quality. What makes these largely forgettable film roles from Presley more disappointing is that he clearly had greater ambitions in mind for his acting career. Presley modeled much of his stage persona and acting ambitions off of one of the most iconic performances in Marlon Brando’s career – On the Waterfront.

When it comes to selecting which year of the 1950s was the best for cinema, 1954 is a difficult one to argue against. For the Japanese films alone, it had the likes of Seven Samurai, Godzilla, and Sansho the Bailiff, with classics from elsewhere in the world including Rear Window, La Strada, and of course On the Waterfront. But every year has its great movies, and 1959 - to haphazardly paraphrase that aforementioned Marlon Brando movie - could well be a contender.

Marlon Brando's film "Reflections in a Golden Eye" from the 1960s is briefly referenced in Francis Ford Coppola's "Apocalypse Now" through a photograph of Brando's character in the movie. Francis Ford Coppola actually worked on the screenplay for "Reflections in a Golden Eye," which was directed by John Huston, before his collaboration with Brando on "The Godfather." Brando's career took a turn in the 1960s with box-office flops, but he later made a comeback with "A Dry White Season" in 1989, almost a decade after "Apocalypse Now."
A brief scene in Francis Ford Coppola's Apocalypse Now referenced the acclaimed director's first Hollywood link to the celebrated actor Marlon Brando. Although Coppola was known primarily for his masterful directorial efforts in The Godfather and Apocalypse Now, he was also a skilled screenwriter, getting some of his first career opportunities as a co-writer for notable films such as 1970's Patton.
