Joan Weldon, an opera singer and actor who starred in the 1954 sci-fi film “Them!,” died on Feb. 11 in her home in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., her family announced Thursday. She was 90.
“With profound sadness, we announce the passing of Joan Louise Weldon Podell, a loving and devoted mother, wife, grandmother and dear friend, on February 11th, 2021, who passed away peacefully at her home in Fort Lauderdale Fl,” the family wrote. “A talented and successful opera singer and actress of theatre, film, musicals and television, she was simply known to many as Joanie, whose love for light-hearted pranks and practical jokes spread joy wherever she went.”
In “Them!,” which was nominated for a special effects Oscar and spawned a series of “big bug” movies in Hollywood, she played Dr. Patricia Weldon, who helps destroy the colony of mutant ants along with her doctor father.

Deep in the heart of Texas, three outlaws are on a road trip in a vintage muscle car. At the wheel, a gorgeous but deadly piece of work named Tulip O'Hare. Riding shotgun is the Reverend Jesse Custer, a preacher with a shady criminal past (and an even shadier sexual history with Tulip). And the one who never shuts up in the back seat? That's an Irish vampire called Cassidy, who smokes too much weed and rants about topics like why he thinks The Big Lebowski sucks or where all...

We must have been very good this year because Santa just delivered us one heck of an early Christmas present. And by Santa, of course, we mean the holly jolly James Corden. On tonight's new episode of The Late, Late Show, James delivered some much needed holiday cheer in the form of a new Carpool Karaoke—the second of the week after Tuesday's drive with Bruno Mars! Riding shotgun this time around? The queen of the modern day Christmas song, Mariah Carey. Only, this was no regular Carpool Karaoke. What seemed like an innocent duet between the pair to Mimi's classic "All I Want for Christmas Is You" turned into a surprisingly star-studded sing-along, mashing up familiar faces from Ck segments...

With wind in their long hair and drugs stowed in their motorbikes, a couple of born-to-be-wild men blaze a path on the American highway in the opening credits of “Easy Rider.” It’s a quintessential cinematic moment that epitomized the general mood of an entire generation. American 1960s counterculture was a watershed for free speech and socio-politically […]

Few genres have more dedicated fans than simulation racing games. After all, that’s an audience that purchases expensive driving wheels to ensure they get the most accurate experience possible. That’s why I don’t envy developer Codemasters, who has to juggle pleasing that fanbase while also making sure their racing games are fun for a wider audience. It’s something that only a few developers have nailed, namely Turn 10 with the Forza series, as it continues to be a challenge to this day.
Codemasters’ latest racing sim, Dirt Rally, is a triumph in realism. Never before has a rally racing title felt so much like the real deal. A large part of this is thanks to the fantastic job that Codemasters has done with incorporating a co-driver into the game. Riding shotgun, your co-driver will read off notes to the player to warn them about upcoming turns. You...

Randolph Scott plays a former Confederate spy in the 1953 western “The Stranger Wore a Gun.” When the movie starts, Jeff Travis (Scott) is involved in a brutal murder during the final days of the Civil War while spying for Quantrill' Raiders, a gang of notorious Confederate guerrillas. A wanted man after the war, Travis heads west to Arizona to start a new life. Josie Sullivan (Claire Trevor) helps him escape from a river boat and meets up with him later in Arizona. Travis also meets up with one of his former Quantrill Raider associates, Jules Mourret (George Macready), who offers him a position in his new gang of outlaws so he can continue to steal “Yankee gold.”
Mourret wants Travis to continue his old ways as a spy and pretends to be a detective sent by the stage line to investigate recent gold robberies. Travis meets the...

Light spoilers for Shoot 'Em Up lie ahead.
See related Westworld episode 10 review: The Bicameral Mind Westworld episode 9 review: The Well-Tempered Clavier
Shoot ‘Em Up is a very silly film. It’s at its best when it is being very silly, and not when it attempts to be serious or apply something as clichéd and boring as a plot to all the bits between shootings.
Made during a period in Clive Owen’s career when he was making quite a few awards-troubling, critically acclaimed movies, Shoot ‘Em Up stands out quite distinctly as a knowingly trashy and cheerfully ludicrous series of set pieces. The plot that connects all these stunts comes with a pithy Team America-light philosophy on gun use, and could be a parody...

1971’s Duel revved the engines of cinematic road-ragers everywhere and put many a vicious vehicle on the old highway to hell. What horror fan doesn’t love The Car, Christine, and Death Proof?
Those are classics. But what sets the Joy Ride film franchise apart from the rest is that it’s more about the diabolical driver and less about the terrifying truck. Which is not to say the big rig isn’t badass in its own right, but let’s face it: The 18-wheeler isn’t nearly as fun to chat with as actor and stuntman Ken Kirzinger.
Dread Central: Were you familiar with the Rusty Nail character before stepping into the role?
Ken Kirzinger: I auditioned for Rusty in Joy Ride 2 but didn’t get the part. Instead it went to a good friend, Mark Gibbon, who I ended up stunt doubling for in the movie. So yes,...

Zach Anner came to national attention back in 2010 when he participated in Oprah Winfrey's Your Own Show contest by releasing a video stating the reasons he should be the next big thing in TV. Anner has cerebral palsy, and he quickly became an Internet favorite. Despite our fervent support, Anner didn't win Oprah's contest; however, that's not stopping him from rolling along. Anner has released the first episode of Riding Shotgun, in which Anner, his brother, and two of their friends go on a road trip across the Us (and Canada). Reddit will play a big role in Riding Shotgun. The show has its own subreddit, where fans previously voted for the cities they wanted Anner to visit during his trip. After Anner picked out eight choices from the nominees, fans were then encouraged to post the highlights of their favorite cities so that Zach would know what...

Zach Anner might have missed his chance at fame when his show, "Rollin' With Zach," was cancelled from Oprah Winfrey's Own television network last year after just six episodes. Now, Zach is back with a new Reddit-powered travel show -- and he wants you to ride shotgun.
"Riding Shotgun With Zach Anner" is a new web series starring Anner, a comedian with cerebral palsy who pokes fun at his condition in his comedic bits. Reddit users will have the chance to pick eight cities where Anner will travel over the course of six weeks. Submissions will be accepted through Monday, July 23, at midnight via the official Zach Anner subreddit.
"I want to make a travel show that encapsulates all the awesomeness of the Reddit community," Anner wrote to Reddit users for his "Ask Me Anything" jaunt. "I want to incorporate your unique perspectives and experiences. And I want you...

Reto-Moto would like to show you a shooter based in WWII.
We've got the exclusive debut trailer for the upcoming World War II Fps Heroes & Generals from Swedish developer Reto-Moto. I can't find a ton of information about the game or the developer (or even announced platforms, for that matter), but Heroes & Generals appears to be in an early stage of development. Based on the scant details on the game's official site, I'm hard-pressed to say that the game is primarily an Fps. This bit is especially intriguing:
Fight to become a war hero or rise through the ranks to command the armies of nations. Your actions can turn the tide of a persistent online war being fought by thousands of players.

50 Cent is coming out with a new book, Playground about a 13-year-old bully “who finds redemption as he faces what he's done." Of course, 50 Cent is somewhat famous for being a bully himself, so I don’t know if this smacks of hypocrisy, redemption, or hubris.
The big news of the day was the continued fallout from At&T attempting to influence Glbt orgs to lobby for their business interests with large cash donations. After Bilerico broke the original story on GLAAD, they’ve followed up with news that at least three other organizations, Ngltf, National Gay and Lesbian Chamber of Commerce, and Equality California have all admitted to lobbying for the telecom giant. Chris Geidner adds that the Hrc declined to submit a letter in support of the merger.

"We all sat there and decided to make a china cup, a beautiful, delicate china cup. You can't tell me we should have made a beer mug." --David Fincher on making Alien 3
David Fincher's Alien 3 (1992) has become somewhat infamous, thanks mostly to how it illustrates how creative differences behind the camera affect the end product (to say nothing about how the film alienated---pun intended---fans of James Cameron's Aliens by killing off the beloved characters of Hicks and Newt during the opening sequence). Essentially, the film began production on the whim of a release date: May 22nd 1992. Seven million dollars were allegedly spent before filming began, as the unfinished script ran through a gauntlet of writers (including cyberpunk writer William Gibson) and, directorially, the project was handed off from Renny Harlin to first-timer David Fincher (who began his career as a technician for Industrial Light and...

The Coens do cowboys – and shoot them surprisingly straight – in this overhaul of the John Wayne classic, says Xan Brooks
Jeff Bridges – stooped and shambling, with a gravelly drawl – gives us the Duke by way of the Dude in the Coen brothers' satisfying, back-to-basics overhaul of the antique John Wayne classic. True Grit is a film in which boot-heels bump reassuringly on wooden porches and where horses kick up sprays of water as they canter through the creek-bed. The old-school American western was not dead, it seems. It was just playing possum, waiting for the Coens to come along and rouse it.
True Grit beats a path back to the original Charles Portis novel to spin the tale of 14-year-old Mattie Ross (newcomer Hailee Steinfeld), a pig-tailed angel of vengeance, hellbent on finding the man who robbed and killed her father. Given the choice of three Us marshals to hire,...

Ice Road Truckers has always been one of those shows that just missed me. Reality shows frequently have trouble getting the final experience to match up with their on paper sell, but Irt worked that problem in the opposite direction of most. When I first heard about the show, I couldn’t imagine the interest. Well, apart from a certain Nascar “maybe a truck will go in the drink” sort of interest. Amazingly, the show has delivered, and the ratings show that I’m not alone in thinking so.
Still, as I mentioned, the show didn’t completely hook me. The crew is taking things up a notch now with Ice Road Trucker Deadliest Roads, and it’s hard to deny that this one makes it difficult to look away. We’ve moved to a job hauling loads in the Himalayas, on roads where on average someone dies every 4.5 minutes.
