Kaley Cuoco, the Golden Globe-nominated star of HBO Max sleeper hit series “The Flight Attendant,” is set to play Doris Day in an upcoming limited series over at Warner Bros. Television. The show will be based on A.E. Hotchner’s 1976 biography of the Academy Award-nominated “Pillow Talk” actress’ life, which she historically kept private, from her days as a big band singer to her death at 97 in 2019. She was also one of the last classic legends of Hollywood, as well as a dedicated animal-rights activist. Her other film credits include “Calamity Jane,” “The Man Who Knew Too Much,” “Move Over, Darling,” and “The Thrill of It All.”

At the age of 96, Carl Reiner remains impressively engaged with life.
He tweets daily to his 237K Twitter followers, often in criticism of President Trump. A tweet he posted on Friday garnered 12,000 likes: “I ask: Is there anything more upsetting than having our blow-hard, self serving President meet with foreign leaders and, suppossedly [sic], on our behalf, make deals that make him and his billionaire friends richer?”
And he keeps on top of the news, like the recent controversy over late night TV host Samantha Bee, who earned widespread censure after she called Ivanka Trump the “c” word.
“I know Samantha Bee, and I know she’s not a racist or anything,” Reiner tells Deadline. “She’s a very good soul, and she made a mistake and she apologized profusely, and it’s a little different than what Roseanne did. It’s quite a bit different because Samantha Bee’s heart is in the right place.

Actress Dorothy Malone, who starred in the primetime soap opera Peyton Place, died Friday in her hometown of Dallas. She was age 93.
Malone died in an assisted living center from natural causes days before her 94th birthday, said her daughter, Mimi Vanderstraaten.
After 11 years of mostly roles as loving sweethearts and wives, the brunette actress decided she needed to gamble on her career instead of playing it safe. She fired her agent, hired a publicist, dyed her hair blonde and sought a new image.
"I came up with a conviction that most of the winners in this business became stars overnight by playing shady dames with sex appeal," she recalled in 1967. She welcomed the offer for Written on the Wind, in which she played an alcoholic nymphomaniac who tries to steal Rock Hudson from his wife, Lauren Bacall.
"And I've been unfaithful or drunk or oversexed almost ever since— on the screen,...

No, Hollywood legend Doris Day is not making her comeback in Clint Eastwood's next movie.
Strange rumours of a new film project for the 93-year-old actress-singer started in a German tabloid, eventually catching fire online.
Her spokesperson Charley Walters has since spoken out to insist that Day is solely focused on her animal charity at this time.
"While Doris always appreciates hearing from her fans, the rumours about her returning to the big screen are not true," Walters told Deadline.
"She adores her longtime friend Clint Eastwood, but Doris's recent and current focus remains on her Doris Day Animal Foundation, which continues to help animals and the people who love them."
Day last appeared on the big screen back in 1968, in the blackout movie Where Were You When the Lights Went Out? and romantic comedy With Six You Get Eggroll.

Doris Day today Doris Day, who turned 89 last April 24, was a special guest at the Nancy for Frank show — that’s Nancy Sinatra for Frank Sinatra — on SiriusXM Radio channel 71. The Doris Day photo above was posted on Nancy for Frank‘s Facebook page and on the Frank Sinatra Family Forum. (See also: Doris Day photo, with furry friend.) The Doris Day special was aired in two parts in late June 2013. The radio show consisted of Nancy Sinatra chatting with Day, in addition to musical interludes featuring Doris Day songs such as "I’ll String You Along with Me," "But Not for Me," "I’ll See You in My Dreams," and "Hooray for Hollywood," plus two versions of "I Didn’t Know What Time It Was" — one sang by Day, another sang by Frank Sinatra. Doris Day and Frank Sinatra made only movie together, Gordon Douglas’ 1954 musical drama Young at Heart,...

"I don't want you
But I hate to lose you
You've got me inbetween
The devil and the deep blue sea." —Harold Arlen & Ted Koehler
The idiom "between the devil and the deep blue sea" refers to a dilemma where one must choose between two undesirable situations. In Terence Davies' filmic adaptation of Terence Rattigan's 1952 play of the same name—The Deep Blue Sea (2011) was commissioned by the Sir Terence Rattigan Charitable Trust to commemorate the centenary of the playwright—it might be thought that Davies is playing with the idiom's unconfirmed nautical origins. As a portrait of class structure in post-wwii England, Davies could be said to be borrowing from the reference that "between the devil and the deep blue sea" signifies how English Navy sailors were pressed unwillingly into service and then positioned beneath the upper deck (officer territory). Or, perhaps more accurate to its romantic subtext,...

Doris Day may have been — once again — absurdly bypassed by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences' Board of Governors, but at least she'll be getting some much deserved recognition from the Los Angeles Film Critics Association (Lafca). Day, 87, has been named the recipient of the L.A. Critics' Career Achievement Award of 2011 — or 2012, as the ceremony will take place early next year. (This year's winners will be announced on December 11.) The first Lafca award winners were announced in 1975. The annual Career Achievement Award was instituted the following year. Since then, a mere four women have been recognized for their contributions to the motion picture industry: actresses Barbara Stanwyck (1981) and Myrna Loy (1983), editor Dede Allen (1999), and now Doris Day. Male recipients — sometimes two per year — range from auteur John Cassavetes to comedian/auteur Jerry Lewis, from producer John Calley to silent-era pioneer Allan Dwan, from animator Chuck Jones to filmmaker Akira Kurosawa.

"My Heart" is to be released in the United Kingdom on Sept. 5. It'll be available on CD and digital-download formats. "It was brought to my attention that the recordings were in storage and Sony was interested in releasing them," Day explained. "So I listened to them and at first had some misgivings, but after they were re-mastered, I liked them and hoped my fans would too." Day added that "these are the tunes that reflect my love of animals and my love for my son." The album features the track "Life Is Just a Bowl of Cherries," produced by Day's son Terry Melcher, who died of cancer in 2004. Doris Day, who began her film...

With only four weeks and eight episodes remaining in its not-so-fresh ninth season, American Idol is going to try something a little different next Tuesday: Harry Connick Jr. will be the first guest mentor in the show's history to arrange the songs and write the orchestrations for the remaining contestants as they tackle the Frank Sinatra songbook. And since the top 5 hopefuls are having control wrested from their hands anyway, I say let's do the honor of choosing their songs as well. The full list of 50 pre-approved Sinatra tracks is listed after the jump, and below is my dream set-list.

The "American Idol" contestants are being saddled with the songs of Ol' Blue Eyes for this coming week. What should they sing?
This is probably the hardest week for song choice so far. Shania Twain may be limited but at least her songs were written in the last 15 years.
Don't get us wrong -- love Sinatra. But his songs are from the 40s and 50s and are classics, so the Idols are stuck in a catch-22 of "make it your own, make it current" and "don't mess with an original." It's a very hard line to walk and the judges are really harping on it this season. But here are our choices for the Idols:
Crystal Bowersox, "One for My Baby"
Raise your hand if you vote for "Idol" and remember Bette Midler singing this to Johnny Carson. That's what we thought. Regardless, Crystal should glam it up even more...
