Quotes

  • Paul Hochen : I tell you something. From this grape, see, comes the kind of wine that emperors trade castles for. Oh, thank you. And, also, in my opinion, this is the kind of woman that them's traded castles for.

  • Paul Hochen : These are the finest grapes in California. Maybe the finest grapes in the whole world. Grown by a friend of mine. A friend of mine named Gino Verdugo. Gino Verdugo's a friend. Each one of these hand selected, a perfect jewel, rich and full. Each, a jewel.

  • Paul Hochen : Locked doors don't keep dreams out.

  • Paul Hochen : You know what you are? You're like a vineyard. You're like a vineyard that has been choked with weeds. It can't breath and it can't grow and it can't reach towards the sun because no one's paid any attention it. And one day there comes somebody. And he takes away the weeds. And the vines begin to grow. And they reach towards the sun. I would like, very much, to be that someone.

  • [last lines]

Paul Hochen : [to Michael as he carries him through the vineyard fields]  You pay attention, it's very important.

Paul Hochen : [picking a grape off the vine]  Take a grape, like that. You hold it gently between your fingers, then you squeeze it. If it pops like that, then it's ready for wine, that's the Hochen secret. That's what my grandfather told my father, and my father told me, and now I've told you.

[Paul gives Michael a loving kiss on the cheek before setting him down as they continue joyfully wandering through the vineyard fields]
