Quotes

  • Judge Wood : Hart wasn't an outlaw to start. Fact is, he taught school here and we all liked him. Now at about that time, my son Henry and the sheriff's kid brother Jim were helping slaves escape from Missouri.

Captain Alan Westcott : Your son?

Judge Wood : Yes. Hart said he wanted to help, saying that he was all for the Union. But we were tipped off that what he really intended to do was to betray our set-up to Southern bushwhackers. I don't understand how men can play both sides. You?

Captain Alan Westcott : Uh, peace time? No, Judge, I can't. But, uh, when there's a war, I guess... guess a man does what he's told.

  • Captain Alan Westcott : Kate! I didn't expect to run into you out here.

Kate Clarke : You didn't run into me. I knew you'd be back. I want to talk to you about Quantrill. Don't trust him.

    Captain Alan Westcott : I don't.

Kate Clarke : Quantrill will kill you the minute he doesn't need you.

Captain Alan Westcott : Well, I know that too.

Kate Clarke : Well, then why do you... why do go to him?

Captain Alan Westcott : I gotta talk to him about somethin'.

Kate Clarke : Oh? Don't you have anything to talk... talk to me about?

Captain Alan Westcott : [laughs]  Well, not with uh... not with Quantrill packin' four guns.

Kate Clarke : You don't fool me. You're not afraid of Quantrill. And you're not afraid to take me away from me either. It's just that you just don't want to, that's all.

Captain Alan Westcott : [laughs]  Well, Kate...

Kate Clarke : [Coming on to him]  Naw it's alright. Maybe you will when, ah, when you think about what you're missing.

    [They kiss passionately]
