All "Game of Thrones" fans know the words Valar Morghulis, a Valyrian saying for "All men must die." That phrase almost proved prophetic when it came to HBO's attempts to whittle down the many spin-off shows at various stages in development over the years. Although "House of the Dragon" survived the culling to earn a second season, several others -- the Jon Snow-centric series, an untitled prequel starring Naomi Watts (which actually filmed a full pilot episode before being scrapped), and even a show set in the slums of King's Landing, Flea Bottom -- were doomed to the chopping block.
One of the more fascinating concepts, however, involved a famous figure from Westerosi history known as Nymeria. Titled "Ten Thousand Ships", this, too, never coalesced and we've never known why. The second season (or “Part”) of The Jinx is arriving on HBO nine years after the conclusion of the first and, wholly coincidentally, right on the eve of the Jewish observance of Passover.
This timing has me thinking of “Dayenu,” the festive song in which we recite the various miracles of the Exodus, one at a time and each followed by the declaration of “Dayenu,” meaning “It would have been enough.” So… Leading us out of Egypt (“Dayenu!”), parting the Red Sea (“Dayenu!”), giving us the Torah (“Dayenu!”) and so on.
When it comes to the first six episodes of The Jinx, it goes something like: If it had just been an exceptionally well-produced depiction of a twisty, unresolved series of murders tied to real estate mogul Robert Durst? Dayenu! (Or it would have been enough for a generally enthusiastic review.)
If it had just been an exceptionally well-produced documentary...

Spoilers for "X-Men '97" to follow.
The latest episode of "X-Men '97," "Remember It," took us to mutant haven Genosha (before it all went to Hell anyway). The island turned out to be a treasure trove of cameos; the Genoshan ruling council included Hellfire Club leaders Emma Frost and Sebastian Shaw, Morlock leader Callisto, the Irish mutant Banshee, Professor X's old flame Moira MacTaggert, and former Goblin Queen Madelyne Pryor. The streets of Genosha were filled with other mutants whom "X-Men" comics fans may recognize, from Pixie to Dazzler to Marrow to Exodus.
The best mutant cameo of all, though, is the blue-skinned Bavarian Kurt Wagner, aka Nightcrawler. His voice actor, Adrian Hough, joins the ranks of those who've reprised their roles from the 1992 "X-Men" cartoon.
Kurt shows up in the episode's title sequence doing some sword fighting with Gambit. In the episode itself, he escorts Rogue and Gambit...

"In the vastness of space and time, many tales weave into one, under the light of a thousand suns." There's an exciting original sci-fi series about to launch next week. A Thousand Suns is the latest creation from a filmmaker known as "Macgregor", produced by a company called Blackmilk Studio. There's not much out yet about the plot or the different stories. There will be a total of six anthology episodes to watch: Episode 1 - Ice; Episode 2 - Red; Episode 3 - Exodus; Episode 4 - Deal; Episode 5 - Bug; & Episode 6 - Tomorrow Land. Macgregor says his team of filmmakers, including Ruairi Robinson & Tyson Wade Johnston, worked to craft "films that serve as a gateway to our hopes, dreams... and nightmares." This seems like a sleek live-action anthology series akin to Love Death + Robots that will tell various sci-fi stories. I'm really digging the footage in this teaser, and will be...

“Me wanting to be on the show was prompted from my family,” says Grammy-nominated R&b star Sisqo while discussing his time as Lizard on “The Masked Singer.” “They’re big fans of the show. And as it turns out, it seemed like once a season or every other season one of the judges would guess that whoever was masked was me. My family was like, ‘They keep guessing it’s you, when you just gonna go on there?'” Watch his exclusive video interview with Gold Derby senior editor Denton Davidson above.
As Lizard, Sisqo sang “Bring Me to Life” by Evanescense on “Shower Anthems Night.” After receiving the least amount of votes in the Group C final, he was forced to “take it off” and reveal himself. Christian Bale is known for his insane transformations and some of the most critically acclaimed roles in Hollywood. The 50-year-old Oscar winner has worked with some of the greatest directors and delivered some critically and commercially successful flicks. However, he also has a fair share of flop films in his career. Interestingly, many of these projects even came after his highly successful, The Dark Knight Trilogy.
Christian Bale in The Dark Knight Trilogy
Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Trilogy is one of the most significant works in Christian Bale’s filmography. His incredible performance as the Caped Crusader in Nolan’s gritty world elevated the trilogy’s quality and made Bale a household name. Surprisingly, even that stardom could not save the American Psycho fame from some of the biggest flops in his career.

Ziggy Marley thinks that the mixed response to 'Bob Marley: One Love' is fitting. The 55-year-old musician produced Reinaldo Marcus Green's biopic about his late reggae legend father and thinks the fact that audiences have enjoyed the flick more than critics would be appreciated by the 'Three Little Birds' singer.Ziggy told Variety: "I remember when reviews came in. It was like, 'Let's see what the people say.' That was my demeanour."I was like, 'Yeah, this is actually perfect for something representing Bob. That the critics don't get it, but the people get it.' It was meant to be this way."I was just going over the review of the 'Exodus' album (1977 record from Bob Marley and the Wailers). They killed it, (writing) 'It's terrible.' So, the box office thing was how it was meant to be. People make the decisions,...

Ziggy Marley spoke about the disparate box office success and lukewarm critical reviews of the Bob Marley: One Love biopic in an interview on Thursday, likening the project to the critical consensus around his late father’s legendary album Exodus.
“The reviews of my father’s Exodus album … they bashed the album that became the album of the century,” Marley told Variety. “It’s not what they missed, but what they were looking for. They were looking for a different story. Our story’s about this man inside himself and his heart.

Before “Bob Marley: One Love” hit theaters on Valentine’s Day, the musical biopic about the Reggae legend was expected to sing its way to No. 1 on the charts.
But box office projections indicated the Paramount movie — which chronicles Marley’s (Kingsley Ben-Adir) rise to fame in the mid-1970s and complex relationship with his wife Rita Marley (Lashana Lynch) up until he died in 1981 — would start slow. It looked like it would collect $30 million and $35 million during the six days between Valentine’s Day on Wednesday and Presidents’ Day on Monday.
Instead, “One Love” smashed those expectations, earning $52 million during the extended holiday stretch. It remained victorious in its sophomore outing (despite the presence of three new releases), raising its domestic total to $71 million. After three weeks in theaters, the film is nearing the $150 million mark globally. It’s an impressive benchmark for a PG-13 drama that’s aimed...

Randy Spendlove, president of worldwide music and publishing at Paramount Pictures, is no stranger to musical biopics. His roster includes “Dreamgirls” and “Rocketman.” When it came time to bring reggae icon Bob Marley’s story to the big screen, his challenge remained the same as always: “How do you tell the story about a legendary figure? How do you accomplish it? And how do we make sure we utilize Bob?”
Early meetings took place during the pandemic with Marley’s sons Ziggy and Stephen as well as director Reinaldo Marcus Green over Zoom. The answer would be in authentically preserving Bob Marley’s live recordings and enhancing them – with actor Kingsley Ben-Adir’s vocals layered in.
However, the first complication the team needed to overcome was clearing the music rights.

Ridley Scott’s Gladiator 2 is one of the most anticipated movies ever since it was announced. But when it was first announced, fans were initially apprehensive of the sequel being made literally two decades after the original Oscar-winning movie and exclaimed there was no need for a sequel since the first movie was already as perfect as it could be. However, they turned quite welcoming after hearing that the likes of Paul Mescal, Denzel Washington, and Pedro Pascal would be joining the cast.
Ridley Scott’s Gladiator 2
Yet it hasn’t been the first time the director’s decisions have come under fire for he was previously criticized for using only white actors in his movie Exodus and making several historical faults in Gladiator. But as Taylor Swift sang— Karma is a God and it has come to bite Scott in the form of PETA.

Paramount’s “Bob Marley: One Love” is feeling more than alright at the global box office. The musical biopic has generated $101.1 million worldwide after only 10 days in theaters, including $61.4 million in North America and $39.7 million from 59 international territories.
“One Love” retained the top spot on domestic charts in its second weekend of release, grossing $3.7 million on Friday. Internationally, the film added $3.3 million on Thursday and expanded into eight new markets this weekend.
“Bob Marley: One Love,” which opened on Valentine’s Day on Feb. 14, beat expectations in its box office debut with $28.6 million over the traditional weekend and $52 million during the six-day holiday stretch. Although the biopic landed mediocre reviews (and holds a 42% average from critics on Rotten Tomatoes), it earned an “A” CinemaScore from early audiences. “One Love” cost $70 million to produce.

Paramount’s Bob Marley: One Love delivered a huge $50 million-plus domestic opening over the six-day Valentine’s Day-Presidents Day corridor, enough to crush Madame Web‘s $26.2 million start, a record worst for Sony’s superhero adventures.
Monday estimates show One Love raking in $52 million for the six days domestically, up from Sunday’s estimate of $51 million. That includes $34.1 million for the four-day Presidents Day weekend and a record $14 million on Valentine’s Day (rival studios say the decision to go out on sweetheart’s day was a smart choice in building momentum). The movie’s weekend debut is on par with the starts of such musical biopics as Rocketman or Elvis, and did almost double the business it was tracking to do. (Grosses for all films could shift again when final weekend numbers are tallied following the Monday holiday.)

Paramount’s “Bob Marley: One Love” continued its run as box office leader through the specialized six-day holiday frame, adding $7.4 million on Friday from 3,539 locations to bump its domestic tally to $25.3 million. The biopic about the reggae legend could even double the six-day haul of Sony’s new superhero film “Madame Web,” which earned $4.3 million from 4,013 theaters on Friday. North American haul for the Marvel Comics adaptation currently stands at $12.5 million.
Both features opened on Valentine’s Day and are hoping to carry momentum through the Presidents’ Day holiday. “One Love” asserted itself out of the gate with an impressive $14 million on Wednesday, boosted by a handful of premium large-format auditoriums (“Madame Web” has the majority though). On the fifth anniversary of its release, Vertigo Games announced that Metro Exodus hit the 10 million sold copies milestone. They also have some words about the franchise’s next installment, Metro Awakening. The Metro franchise was always one of the most beloved series of horror-survival games culture.
After years, the Vertigo Games studio achieved to meet the fans’ expectations on every single title they worked on. Although the good news given last week was pretty exciting, the studio’s release date information isn’t that satisfying. Vertigo Games says the game will be released “when it’s ready”. It’s still great to know that the game is developing; experiencing the Metro franchise on VR headsets sounds promising at the time, especially after the latest improvements in the virtual-reality industry.

Paramount’s Bob Marley: One Love easily maintained its lead over Sony’s troubled superhero pic Madame Web at the Thursday box office after opening the previous day at $14 million from 3,536 theaters, the top midweek opener ever for Valentine’s Day, the studio says. The honor previously belonged to 2012’s The Vow ($11.5 million). Better yet — and despite “meh” reviews — audiences seem to dig One Love and gave it an A CinemaScore.
The Bob Marley biopic earned another $3.9 million Thursday for a two-day domestic tally of $17.9 million. It is also a force overseas, including opening Wednesday to $2.3 million in the U.K., a record for a music biopic.
In North America, One Love is doing more than double the business of Madame Web, which grossed $6 million on Valentine’s Day after getting ravaged by critics and a C+ CinemaScore from audiences. It added $2.2 million Wednesday for a two-day total of $8.2 million.

Plot: The story of how reggae icon Bob Marley overcame adversity, and the journey behind his revolutionary music.
Review: I remember discovering Bob Marley in college and being blown away at the amount of passion he put into his music. Those on the outside may have just minimalized him to simply being a reggae pot smoker, but he was so much more than that. His message of peace through unity always stuck in this hippie’s mind. So I’ve always felt Bob would be a fantastic subject for a big-budget musical biopic. Unfortunately, I’m not sure I’m any closer to knowing the man than I was before sitting down in the theater.

Valentine’s Day and Presidents Day will host a six-day box office race between two films that could bring some surprises and drama as Paramount’s Bob Marley: One Love biopic goes up against Sony’s supehero offering Madame Web.
Both films are opening everywhere on Wednesday to take advantage of sweethearts wanting to go the movies on Valentine’s Day. Advance ticket sales and very early returns show One Love winning the day.
Both also open in the leadup to the long President’s Day weekend, with the official holiday falling on Monday. The combo of the two holidays means that both films will report a six-day opening.
Tracking suggests that One Love could beat Madame Web with $30 million for the six days (one tracking service is giving a range of $27 million to $33 million). In past years, a superhero pic would generally be the safe bet to win, but...

Reinaldo Marcus Green’s Bob Marley: One Love focuses primarily on Marley’s (Kingsley Ben-Adir) life between 1976 and 1978, during which time the reggae legend fled Jamaica for London and his homeland was plagued by rampant violence and political upheaval. One might think that this limited scope would allow the filmmakers to explore this era of Marley’s life with some measure of specificity, whether in the challenges his marriage faced as his wife, Rita (Lashana Lynch), spent much of this time in America and Jamaica, or how the fractured state of his homeland and his love for its people informed his landmark 1977 album, Exodus. But Green’s shaggy, disjointed film is less interested in the complexities of Marley’s personal or professional life than it is in presenting him as a hero and an inspiration.

Bob Marley and the Wailers music has inspired fans since the 1970’s. From “Could You Be Loved” to “Three Little Birds” to the monumental, “One Love/People Get Ready” it all sounds timeless. And in the new feature film, Bob Marley: One Love, director Reinaldo Marcus Green celebrates the man’s legacy. Thankfully, it doesn’t simply follow the bio pic tradition. The new film places focus on the release of the extraordinary “Exodus.” The band’s attempt to put on a concert meant to bring people together plays a significant part of the feature as well. It’s a wonderful film, and yes, Kingsley Ben-Adir is utterly marvelous as the singer.
As an admirer of Mr. Marley and his legacy, I was thrilled to speak with the folks who brought it to life. First up, we spoke with the fantasic Ziggy Marley, who is one of the producers of the film.

BAFTA-winning Once Upon a Time In Northern Ireland creator James Bluemel has found his next project, an exploration of space.
Bluemel, who has made some of the most critically-acclaimed British docs of the past few years, has also joined Once Upon a Time … producer Keo Films as Creative Director.
Once Upon a Time in Space will look at the humans who are once again heading back out into the atmosphere. China, Russia, America, India, Saudi Arabia and Japan are all investing heavily in lunar exploration, jostling for power and influence amongst the stars, and the series will profile this new space race, examining the consequences for the future of humankind.
“It will be interesting creatively to take the Once Upon a Time approach and focus it on a subject like space, to move the strand on in an unexpected and refreshing way,” said Bluemel. He is EPing alongside Will Anderson and Andrew Palmer for Keo.

London-born actor Kingsley Ben-Adir stars as reggae superstar Bob Marley in this perfectly serviceable biopic from King Richard director Reinaldo Marcus Green. Written by Green, Terence Winter, Frank E. Flowers, and Zach Baylin and from a story by Winter and Flowers, Bob Marley: One Life charts the life of the Jamaican singer from his rise to fame to his untimely death at the age of 36.
Bob Marley: One Love portrays the tumultuous political and social landscape of Jamaica following its independence from the United Kingdom in 1962. Amidst escalating tensions between rival gangs, Marley finds himself thrust into the midst of national turmoil. When he is approached to participate in a peace concert aimed at uniting the people, Marley realises that his involvement in politics could jeopardise not only his career but also his life.

Over the last decade or two, we’ve seen the Hollywood biographical drama — once the cheesiest of genres, though often an irresistible one — mature as a popular art form. The key evolution, dating back to films like “Capote” and “Lincoln” (and extending through “Oppenheimer”), was the decision to ditch the old cradle-to-grave sprawl in favor of focusing on a crucial time period of someone’s life — a strategy that allows for more texture and truth.
“Bob Marley: One Love,” a drama about the most larger-than-life of all reggae superstars, ardently follows the new biopic rules. The film opens in 1976, when Bob Marley (Kingsley Ben-Adir), lean and majestic in his bouncing dreadlocks, heading toward the height of his fame, is getting ready to play a peace concert in Kingston. His goal is to heal the violent factionalism of Jamaican politics. It’s an uphill battle. The Jamaica we see is a...

For 15 minutes or so, Bob Marley: One Love promises to be an antidote to the usual cookie-cutter music biopic, the kind skewered by the 2007 spoof Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story. Riffing back then on 2005’s Walk the Line, which starred Joaquin Phoenix as troubled country star Johnny Cash, Jake Kasdan’s film took aim at the whole jukebox-movie industry, featuring a solemn lead character who “has to think about his entire life before he goes on stage.”
Spoiler alert: this kind of thing also happens in One Love. But Reinaldo Marcus Green’s film promises so much more, things like real-world politics, emotional complexity, and serious danger. In other words, an alternative to the usual narrative of the greenhorn who dreams big, lives that dream, and then gets sucker-punched by The Man. Gradually, though, the realization dawns that we’re being sold a pup. As Led Zeppelin might say,...

In 1976, Bob Marley was the most famous person in Jamaica. He was also a marked man. The star had agreed to play a free concert dubbed “Smile Jamaica.” He’d even written a theme song for the event. Though the show was conceived as a way to quell the rising tide of violence over the island nation’s precarious political state, Marley’s involvement made many think that it was his way of tacitly endorsing the People’s National Party over the more conservative Jamaica Labour Party. Two days before the concert,...

In the years since his premature death, reggae legend Bob Marley has been culturally defanged into a benevolent good-times symbol safe for dorm rooms and yuppie living rooms everywhere. Marley’s string of popular songs, many of which were compiled in his posthumous greatest hits collection “Legend,” turned him into one of the best-selling artists in the world, but this mass-market commercial appeal also necessitated a dilution of his radicalism and spiritual essence. Though many can probably identify “Jamming” or “Is This Love?” as a Marley tune if it was played for them, he’s still probably associated more with generic weed culture than any type of revolution, which is an obvious shame given the political roots of reggae and Jamaica’s storied history.

During a 1979 interview with Bob Marley, New Zealand journalist Dylan Taite asked the musician about his early exposure to different genres. Taite wanted to know if Marley had dabbled in rock or soul before settling on reggae. Marley rubbed his chin and fixed his gaze off camera as he considered the question. “I wasn’t really into dem tings,” he said, “I was really into spiritual music, you know, cause it get more revolutionized.” For Marley, music was a transcendent experience with political potential.
Reinaldo Marcus Green’s Bob Marley: One Love tends unevenly to this idea. The film builds a portrait of Marley (Kingsley Ben-Adir) around the creation of the Jamaican star and his band’s ninth studio album. Exodus was released in 1977 — two years before Bob Marley and the Wailers performed in New Zealand for the first time, and a year after an attempted assassination on the musician’s life.

Filming a scene as the title mystic in Bob Marley: One Love, Kingsley Ben-Adir was striding across a room in Jamaica when he heard, “Cut!” Marley’s son Ziggy, who was on set, had some input: He told the actor that his father wouldn’t have walked that particular way. “He was going up the stairs,” Marley says, “and I tell him, ‘Listen! When Bob walks, he takes two steps at a time.’ ”
Months later, in New York, Ben-Adir re-creates the revised move, his knees almost coming up to his chin.

By racking up three Best Actress Oscar notices between the ages of 26 and 32, previous teenage supporting nominee Jodie Foster proved it possible to earn academy recognition more than twice during adulthood after initially charming them as a child. Now, nearly three decades later, she has improved upon that distinction by landing her fifth career bid for “Nyad,” thus entering the Best Supporting Actress arena for the first time as an adult. Since her two featured bids are separated by 47 years, she now holds the record for longest span between consecutive Oscar nominations in a single acting category.
Foster, who first caught the academy’s attention at 14, belongs to the 18% minority of child nominees who went on to contend as adults. She was preceded in that regard by 17-year-old “Rebel Without a Cause” (1956) cast mates Sal Mineo and Natalie Wood and has only been followed by Saoirse Ronan, who competed for...

In “Amphetamine”, Scud's most visually polished drama about a toxic and intoxicated love between a young Australian financial executive Daniel (Thomas Price) and a straight Hong Kong jack of all trades Kafka (Byron Pang), hope is the only thing permanently absent.
Amphetamine is screening at International Film Festival Rotterdam
The melancholic Kafka is caught between working three jobs to help provide for his sick mother and a not so functional relationship with his girlfriend, who is struggling to understand his broken psyche. When she decides to break off in broad daylight in a posh bar, the boy with the sword has already caught Daniel's eye. Just to make sure we'll understand this instant crush, Scud shows us Kafka's beauty from all sides. Right at the beginning of the film, we observe him giving swimming lessons and being pestered by an elderly man who tells him “he has a body like Michelangelo's”. Soon after,...

Kacey Musgraves has released a studio version of the oft-covered Bob Marley and The Wailers classic “Three Little Birds.” Her rendition is for Reinaldo Marcus Green’s upcoming biopic Bob Marley: One Love.
Musgraves wisely didn’t try to replicate Marley’s roots reggae instrumentation here. Instead, she used his melodies and evergreen lyrics over a gentle acoustic guitar strum, some minimal drums, and a pedal steel. It’s all blanketed in heavy reverb, staying authentic to the comforting quality of the original song while making it her own.
“Three Little Birds” is just one of six Marley covers on an eponymous EP accompanying One Love. That’ll also feature Leon Bridges, Daniel Caesar, Bloody Civilian, Jessie Reyez, Wizkid, and Bob’s grandson Skip Marley. Stream Musgraves’ contribution and then see the full EP tracklist below.

His secret was that he had many conversations with God in the lead-up to the speaker role with which he was anointed.

A new documentary argues some young Jewish Americans – including the directors themselves – have been raised in a system that demands pro-Israel activism
Erin Axelman was a fervent Zionist by the time they reached high school in the late 2000s. For their bat mitzvah, they had received a copy of Exodus by Leon Uris. The 1958 novel, one of the bestselling books of the decade, tells a story about the creation of the Israeli state that helped cement American Zionism. “It’s this kind of heroic, almost mythical tale of the creation of the state of Israel and it was incredibly empowering,” Axelman said.
After reading Exodus, Axelman “became obsessed with Israel”, they said. “I considered joining the Israeli military and fantasized about moving there.” They latched on to the story of Jews returning home.

TV drama writers obsess over audience engagement, with a huge emphasis on personal stakes for their characters. The biggest of these is the prospect of death. But 70+ years of TV have taught us that mortality is rare for characters played by a show's stars. So, when actors leave a show or the decision is made to cut a character, writers see a golden opportunity to play the ultimate stakes game by going terminal.
It's safe to say character departures always upset a segment of a show's audience, however small. But not all such deaths are created equal. Some generate a wave of complaints, others a tsunami of outrage. It's the deaths of characters we love or love to hate, and those especially shocking or egregious, that drive fans to write all-caps messages, accompanied by many exclamation points, in fanzines, letter columns, and social media.
Here are 14 of the most controversial of the controversial.
