Do we feel sorry for a winner?
lora649 July 2001
It's an unusual slant on the subject of money. In this case our hero has got to get rid $1 million by spending it within a certain time if he hopes to inherit millions more. What does he do? He helps his friends with loans, invests in projects and more, bets on races, and so on. Trouble is he actually becomes successful, gains returns on investments, wins bets, etc., so he's not that far ahead! Poor fellow. It's fun though.

Losing millions by making billions?
mark.waltz2 January 2021
Warning: Spoilers
This British perspective on "Brewster's Millions" features Jack Watling as your ordinary good natures office clerk who loses his job for being late, is immediately rehired (which means that he loses his senority and thus an upcoming raise) then finds out that he's the beneficiary of a strange bequest from a wealthy uncle. The only snag is that he has to spend 1,000,000 pounds in a month which seems easier said than done, especially since everything he invests in (guaranteed losses) ends up making more money.

Watling gets two work mates fired so he brings them into his sure thing losing venture, but even when investing in guaranteed flop inventions, he finds out that they succeed irregardless. An attempt to lose it at the roulette wheel also fails. His fiancee, hoping that he won't change, is horrified when he becomes the proud owner of a sheik's harem. Last ditch efforts to lose the money is invest in a show where the acts hired are outlandishly untalented.

Over-the-top in its comedy style with Watling getting to act like a kid overdosing on coffee is funny in spots but most of these moments induce smiles not laughter. This is certainly not overwhelmed with a British way of speaking so plain speaking Yanks like me can find things to enjoy in it. Some of the biggest genuine laughs come from the types of characters he encounters, oddballs to say the least, but not to the point where they become irritating and obnoxious. A fun little distraction but nothing more.

Unfunny remake of Brewsters Millions
malcolmgsw3 July 2020
Difficult to know what is the biggest contributor to the sheer lameness of this remake.Maybe the story had just outlasted its times. It could be the leads.Jack Watling shows he cannot handle comedy.Poor Carole Lesley was no actress but she couldn't cope with the end of her career and committed suicide. There are no less than six writers credited, which is always a bad sign..
