[gang start physically harassing Anita]

Anita : [sung] Anita's gonna get her kicks tonight... We'll have our private little mix, tonight! He'll walk in hot and tired, poor dear! Don't matter if he's tired, as long as he's here, tonight...

Maria : Chino. When I look at Chino nothing happens.
Anita : What do you expect to happen?
Maria : I don't know. Something. What happens when you look at 'Nardo?
Anita : [smiles] It's when I DON'T look that it happens.
Maria : [mischievously] I think I will tell mama and papa about you and 'Nardo in the balcony of the movies!
Anita : [holding up the dress she is sewing] I'll rip this to shreds!
Maria : Oh no! But if perhaps you could manage to lower the neck?
[holds out scissors]
Anita : [taking the scissors back] NEXT year.

[Anita has found Tony and Maria meeting each other]
Maria : He just came from the drugstore, to deliver aspirin.
Anita : You'll need it.
Tony : Not us. We're fine - we're out of this world!
Anita : You're out of your heads.
Tony : We're twelve feet in the air!
Maria : Anita can see that.
[to Anita]
Maria : You will not tell?
Anita : [sarcastic] Tell what? How can I tell what goes on twelve feet over my head?

Bernardo : Now, I do not say these things to spoil your evening, or to hear myself talk - I am here longer than you, Maria!
Maria : Sí, Nardo.
Bernardo : Someday, when you're an old, married woman with five children, then you can tell *me* what to do! But right now, it is the other way around. Now go to bed.
Anita : [Bernardo exits, to Maria] He's the old, married woman.

Maria : [looks down at her chest, pulling down her slip's neckline] One inch. How much can one little inch do?
Anita : Too much.
Maria : Anita, it is now to be a dress for dancing, no longer for praying.
Anita : Listen, with those boys, you can start in dancing and end up praying.
