Bad, but fascinating
sm0jsm9 December 2003
It's bad. Normally I would not waste my time watching a bad movie (that I know beforehand will be bad), but at the same time it is fascinating. I guess what fascinates me and other swedish viewers is the fact that this is really CAMP. It is funny sometimes - and corny most of the time, but that is part of the charm. I will watch out for the other Åsa-Nisse movies as they are shown at odd hours on some TV channel, because they are part of our heritage. Don't ask me why, though.

Spot-on, humorous caption of Swedish class-struggle

This film, by many connosoirs regarded as the peak of the Åsa-Nisse sequence, is indeed director Ragnar Frisk´s undisputed masterpiece. The plot takes master poacher and illegal fisherman Nils Nilsson on the Ridge, commonly known as "Åsa-Nisse" ("Ridge-Nils") and his faithful, if not overly gifted, side-kick Klabbarparn into high adventure as they have to pose as noblemen to help a young girl win her heart´s desire. As you understand, the clash between the Swedish nobility and the rural antics of Åsa-Nisse and his crew of misfits makes for a truly hilarious tale of the burlesque. John Elfström and Arthur Rolén, having already portrayed these legendary Swedish folk-heroes on numerous occasions, act as if their lives depended on it, and are sure to leave you with cramps of laughter in your stomach.

On a personal note, I, being of noble heritage myself, found the depiction of old Swedishs counts and barons acceptable, bur perhaps a trifle naive.
