we thought that we were on the way to ending poverty

With Johnson's war on poverty underway, the Office of Economic Opportunity wanted to document it. Edmond Levy's Oscar-winning documentary "A Year Toward Tomorrow" shows VISTA members tending to African-Americans in Atlanta and Native Americans in Arizona. It's a sad irony that poverty increased after Johnson left. Even so, the documentary is worth seeing.

We had wars on poverty, drugs and terrorism, and all those things are more widespread than ever before. I heard a joke that because of that, we should have a war on jobs to ensure 100% employment.
