We will probably never see a motion picture phenomenon like George Lucas' "Star Wars" ever again. The United States was still shaking off its Vietnam War hangover in the mid-1970s, and while the top filmmakers of the New Hollywood were mostly attracted to edgy material that explored its characters' damaged psyches, audiences were in the mood to escape. Steven Spielberg's "Jaws" offered emphatic proof of this mindset during the summer of 1975 when it briefly became the highest-grossing movie in U.S. box office history.
Lucas' space opera was an altogether different kind of sensation. The briskly paced yarn about a young farm boy who discovers he might be the galaxy's savior ignited the imaginations of kids the world over, and Lucas deepened the viewer's immersion by employing an array of pioneering special effects and wildly inventive creature/production designs. "Star Wars" was world-building on a scale that matched "The Wizard of Oz,...

Lawrence Turman Dies: Oscar-Nominated Producer Of ‘The Graduate’, ‘American History X’ & More Was 96
Oscar-nominated producer Lawrence Turman died Saturday at the Motion Picture and Television Country Home and Hospital. He was 96. He had a stellar career not only as a producer of such seminal films as The Graduate (1967), The Great White Hope (1970), American History X (1998) and many more in a producing career that lasted six decades, but he also took a significant turn when he left his partnership with producer David Foster to head the prestigious Peter Stark Producing Program at USC in 1991, an association that continued until his retirement just two years ago.
His son, John Turman, confirmed the death to Deadline. “Our father Lawrence Turman passed away late yesterday,” he said. “It’s sad, but he had a long and storied life, and it’s the passing of an era.” He added that the MPTF is planning a memorial service as well as USC at a later date.

Almost four months after the BBC reformed its television division, the corporation has appointed the two leads for its most prominent channels.

Chief content officer Charlotte Moore introduced the new structure for BBC Television in December — a revamp that restructured the Beeb’s television division accordingly around a new iPlayer-focused strategy, coupled with plans to scrap channel controller positions and empower the broadcaster’s genre chiefs.
Both Irtizaali and Smith will report directly to Dan McGolpin, director of BBC iPlayer and channels, who will bring together all of the programming and curation activity across iPlayer and the channels.

Sue Lyon, the actress who at age 14 starred as the title character in Stanley Kubrick’s adaptation of “Lolita,” died Thursday in Los Angeles. She was 73.
Lyon had been in failing health for some time, her friend Phil Syracopoulos told The New York Times.
Born Suellyn Lyon in 1946 in Iowa, Lyon’s family moved to Los Angeles when she was a small child. As a teenager, she began acting in small television roles, including an appearance on “The Loretta Young Show” that brought her to Kubrick’s attention. She was subsequently cast in “Lolita” at 14 in part because the filmmakers aged the character up from 12, as in Vladimir Nabokov’s novel. Upon release, Lyon was catapulted to stardom, and she won the Golden Globe Award for Most Promising Newcomer — Female for her performance, which had her acting alongside James Mason, Shelley Winters, and Peter Sellers, some of the era’s biggest stars.

While most of us have already unpacked from our Summer travels, pushing those suitcases to the back of the closet, the movies make road trips a year-round activity, and a source for many screen stories. There are travel tales from Hollywood’s Golden Age, like It Happened One Night and, of course, Sullivan’S Travels. And when the young rebels took over in the late 60’s and 70’s we got more classics like Easy Rider and Scarecrow . Now it’s time to “hit the bricks” once more, with a considerably younger set of travelers. But it’s no vacation, they’re working hard, playing hard, and driving hard. Their lives are far from sweet in American Honey.
The heroine of Honey is almost twenty year-old Star (Sasha Lane). We first see her “dumpster diving” along with her boyfriend’s grade school-aged son and daughter. As they lug their “haul” down the street,...

A minute can seem a considerable amount of time when you’re waiting at the microwave door like a starved lion stalking its prey. A minute is forever when your legs are about to turn to soup on a treadmill; and as for being at work… well 60 seconds is a damn cruel eternity when it’s the last few minutes of the day.
We underestimate the power of the minute – you’d be surprised at what the world accomplishes by the time your microwave reaches zero. While you’ve been reading this intro, billions of chemical reactions have taken place in your body. Billions. If you’re reading this on the toilet… perhaps a few more. And if you’re reading this having sex it’s definitely about time you rethink your priorities.

Gogglebox. One Born Every Minute. Educating Yorkshire. You'd think Channel 4 had enough factual shows on its plate but apparently not, because last night at a fancy shindig at the Serpentine it announced a whole load of new series that could be our new obsessions. But which one is for you? What should you be looking forward to? Digital Spy is here to help - read on for our handy guide to what's coming up...
The new show for... you to chat about at work the next day
Introducing Freshers. We're properly excited about this new series following new university students - not only with cameras, but by actually tracking their phones, Facebook, Instagram and so on (don't worry, they've given permission - this isn't a scandal waiting to happen). In the clip we saw last night, an 18-year-old was moping about a romance-related scandal, while texts flashed up alongside footage of students.
