The first season, airing in the summer of 1968, sought to capture a throwback 1930s aesthetic, with costumes and songs inspired by the bygone period. The style was evocative of the streetwise "gold digger" chorus girl films of the '30s, as well as the popular gangster films of that decade (mostly produced by Warner Bros.). The stylistic choice may have been inspired by the popularity of recent box office hit Bonnie and Clyde (1967), set in the Depression era. The 1969 season expanded its retro aesthetic to include the 1940s war years, and the 1970 season abandoned the throwback gimmick in favor of a more contemporary sensibility.
The "Golddiggers" name was meant to evoke the streetwise chorus girls of the 1930s Warner Bros. "Gold Diggers" musicals - Gold Diggers of Broadway (1929), Gold Diggers of 1933 (1933), Gold Diggers of 1935 (1935), Gold Diggers of 1937 (1936), and Gold Diggers in Paris (1938) - and other musicals of their ilk (often featuring similar casts of Warner Bros. contract players and iconic choreography by Busby Berkeley), like 42nd Street (1933), Footlight Parade (1933), and Dames (1934). The original "Gold Diggers" films were based on Avery Hopwood's 1919 play "The Gold Diggers", where the use of the slang term "gold digger" originated.
The Golddiggers' Season 1 (1968) lineup included: Cathy Lee Crosby, Lezlie Dalton, Karen Dolin, Lynn Dolin (Lynn Dolin Mann), Wendy Douglas, Merry Elkins, Peggy Hansen, Suzannah Jordan, Julie Levin, Cheryl Masterson, Debi McFarland, Darlina Olsen, and Jeanne Sheffield. The 1968 season was inspired by a 1930s aesthetic.
The Golddiggers' Season 2 (1969) lineup included: Nancy Bonetti, Suzy Cadham, Jackie Chidsey, Paula Cinko, Rosetta Cox (Rosie Cox Gitlin), Lezlie Dalton, Michelle DellaFave, Peggy Hansen, Joy Hawkins, Sheila Mann (Sheila Allan), Debi McFarland, Barbara Sanders (Barbara Sanders Joiner), and Holly Smith. The 1969 season's retro aesthetic spanned the jukebox era of the 1930s-1940s.
The Golddiggers' Season 3 (1970) lineup featured ten members: Pauline Antony, Wanda Bailey, Jackie Chidsey, Paula Cinko, Rosetta Cox (Rosie Cox Gitlin), Michelle DellaFave, Tara Leigh (Renee Anderson), Susan Lund (Susie Ewing), Micki McGlone, and Patricia Mickey. The 1970 season, entitled "The Golddiggers in London", dropped the retro aesthetic of the previous seasons and was taped "across the pond" in London, England. British-born Antony and Bailey joined the troupe for the London series, and would remain with The Golddiggers on their return to America.
