It appears “The Trip” may have to relinquish its spot as one of the best movie trilogies, since it’s serving a fourth and final course. Not that we’re complaining. We’re just as hedonistic about delicious cinema as Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon are about food, wine, and James Bond impressions. “The Trip to Greece,” which just released its official trailer, reunites the sparring comedians in stunningly beautiful Greece to retrace Odysseus’s footsteps. “The Trip to Greece” is the fourth and final installment of the exceedingly entertaining comedy series and the culmination of almost 10 years of collaboration.
The brainchild of Brydon, Coogan, and director Michael Winterbottom, “The Trip” got its start as a British sitcom in 2010. Brydon and Coogan starred as fictional versions of themselves on a restaurant tour of the north of England, a conceit that went global in “The Trip to Italy” (2014) and “The Trip to Spain...

Loosely based on beloved author Caitlin Moran’s semi-autobiographical novel of the same name, Coky Giedroyc’s rollicking “How to Build a Girl” is an amusing enough entry into the canon of coming-of-age teen comedies, but one made even better with another winning performance by star Beanie Feldstein. The “Booksmart” and “Lady Bird” charmer has already left her mark on the genre, and Giedroyc’s feature only allows her to continue that tradition.
Set in mid-’90s Britain, the film follows Feldstein as Johanna (a Moran stand-in), a geeky nobody desperate to make her mark on the world. After a (hilarious and also terribly cringe-y) appearance on a local television show fails to launch Johanna’s latent dreams of being a writer, she opts to pivot to something new: wild rock critic. Reinventing herself as the showy “Dolly Wilde” eventually leads to unexpected success and Johanna’s admittance to a world of hip London types,...

Sylvester Groth shines in this East German movie about a luckless private in a Polish prison, thrown in with a group of defeated Nazi war criminals. For a country that usually paints the ideological divide in black and white red, Frank Beyer’s film of Hermann Kant’s semi-autobiographical story is surprisingly even-handed. An excellent addition to films from behind the old Iron Curtain.

Us screenwriter whose life was often wilder than his own scripts
William Norton, who has died aged 85, was a screenwriter whose pre- and post-Hollywood adventures surpassed anything he imagined for the screen. The exploits of the virile stars Burt Lancaster, Burt Reynolds, John Wayne and Gene Hackman, tracking down villains in his screenplays, pale in comparison to Norton's time as a gunrunner in Latin America and Ireland.
Norton was born in Ogden, Utah, where his parents (Irish Catholics) were ranchers who lost their land in the Depression. They moved to California, where Norton excelled at high school, until he was expelled because he had a child by a fellow student, Betty Conklin. The 18-year-olds married, just before he joined the army, serving in France and Germany during the second world war.
