Memorable masterpiece which is rarely seen today.
AZAM-KHORASANI21 August 2004
Mera Naam Joker will always leave a lasting impression on me. The story was loosely based on Raj Kapoor's life & is a tale of divided into 3 chapters (as the joker would say the 1st chapter representing childhood, the 2nd youth & the 3rd ultimately old age). The film tells the story of a man searching for love, giving his heart & soul to entertain the world asking only for the world to have a place in its heart for him. His philosophy prevents him from showing the negative human emotions as the joker lives for the audience applause he can only laugh at the hardships in life, never allowed to shed a tear in sadness.

A scene that sums this up is when Raju (Joker) loses his mother to a heart attack (when she discovers her son has taken up the profession which killed her husband in a stunt that went horribly wrong). But as they say in showbiz the show must go on. Therefore Raju has no time to mourn for the mother who had supported him all his life. Carrying the guilt that he may have directly caused his mothers death he returns to the stage to his adoring public. However the heartache he feels overwhelms him & in a fit of total despair & loss he cries out 'Maa (mother) Maa'. As the circus clears Raju is the only person left standing alone with empty seats surrounding him. Kapoor effectively pulls off the act of shear desolation shielded by a veil of self-ridicule to really give you an impression of the inner torment that Raju eventually succumbs to.

If you are prepared to ignore the flaws in the film such as the over melodramatic parts (which there are plenty of) & prepared to watch the full 4 hours you should find Mera Naam Joker thoroughly consuming & invaluable insight into the life & relationships of an actor few have surpassed in the Indian film industry.

One of Raj Kapoor's finest movies
Ibuk28 July 2008
I consider Mera Naam Joker to be one of Raj Kapoor's finest movie followed by Sangam. As a child I disliked Mera Naam Joker,I thought it was dull then years later I watched it again and realised how wrong I was. Mera Naam Joker was Raj Kapoor's personal project,he invested millions and millions into MNJ only for it to fail miserably at the box office. Since it's release MNJ is regarded as a cult classic. Looking at the movie you can see where that money went,MNJ has cameos from Bollywood's leading actors:Dharmendra, Simi Garewal, Manoj Kumar,Rajendra Kumar,Dhara Singh and many more. Mera Naam Joker tells the story of a man who is lonely and unhappy and yet he spreads his happiness around the world dressed up as a clown. The music as per usual for a RK production is extraordinary, my favourite is Jeena Yahan Marna Yahn which has a haunting feel to it. It is a real shame that on it's release MNJ didn't get the recognition it rightfully deserves. MNJ is a unique movie experience that will touch people's heart and will remain fixed in their memory forever

a sublime study of love
addytorials5 October 2005
This supposedly autobiographical epic tale from Raj Kapoor broke all film-making conventions of '70s India. It was too long, there was no constant heroine and the hero never won.

Yet, the story unfolds beautifully, taking the viewer through the life of a simple man and his women. The protagonist is unreal in his simplicity and is more of a metaphor for the ideal lover. And like an ideal lover, he fails again and again. No film has better romanticised the self-defeatist trend of being a "good human being".

It is an understanding of romance in many stages seen through an unbiased almost transparent male perspective. It is more a study of "love" than a love story in itself.

The protagonist, pitched as a clown, brings to light the forever defeated lover, who the world laughs at. Good guys really do finish last. This is no Devdas. This is a man who goes through extreme emotional anguish only to stand back up again and expose himself and his pain to the world so that others may have a good laugh.

The downward spiral of the protagonist's resilient self-defeatist selfless romance bring no conclusive climax. And perhaps, that's how it really is. For people like these, there really is no conclusion. Life just goes on and on and chapters of their defeat just pile on one after the other.

A sublime movie.

A heart touching movie
pragnabharathy8 August 2006
This film though stretched 3 hours and 44 minutes touches the human heart. Loving a girl next door, singing songs, marrying at the end were routine when this film was made.

Raj Kapoor who was famous for his innovative ideas and selection of plots for story aptly chose the untouched Joker as main character of his movie Mera Naam Joker. In different phases of the life he falls in love with different heroines, but always loses his love. This is the novelty in the story.

The dialogues like "kabhi mai bhi solah saal ka tha", Raj crying Maa...Maa.. touches the human heart.

Let the Film bombed at the box-office, but it was released for more than 30 times in Hyderabad(India)especially at Royal Theatre (Hyd, on all the occasions it ran for 40+ days.

I happened to watch this movie on all the releases, but every time the same age-old humane touch touched my heart. Even today, in the mechanical life, If I feel that I am becoming mechanical or going away from the humanitarian feelings, I simply close my bedroom doors, slid the CD in and watch this movie patiently. My heart weeps, my body becomes heavy and in the next morning I fully a human with concern towards my fellow beings.

In my life of 40 years I saw many a movie, but none touched my heart at Mera Naam Joker did.

I salute the thinker, director and brave producer...Late Raj Kapoor for producing the great movie Mera Naam Joker.

A Worthwhile Movie
Pratik11215 September 2006
I first saw this movie when it was first released in the cinemas in 1970. The movie shows the life of a clown, who has gone through many ups and downs in his life. As a child he is infatuated by his teacher, Mary but due to being poor he has to try and help his mother by acting like a clown. He finds out that his father was a clown in circus and that he is killed in an accident. He is finally expelled from school despite objections from the teacher. On his departure, he is informed that the teacher is leaving and is getting married and that her fiancé wants him to be his best man. At the same time, he is handed back a doll of a clown, which he had once given to his teacher. The next part is when he grows up and meets some Russian circus artists and decides to try and join them. During this time he falls in love with a female trapeze artist and despite language barrier he dreams of marrying her. but soon his mother, on finding out his real job, dies during one of his performances and he decides that life has to go on. But the circus closes and the artists return. Once again, he is handed the doll back The third and the final part is where he meets a dancer, Meena, who has to dress up as a boy in order survive. They fall in love and do many shows during which time, he informs her that he hates liers and leaves her for a while. Upon his return he gives her his doll. But soon this is returned when Meena finally finds a man with whom she thinks she will find fame with. The movie has a multistarcast, including Raj Kapoor himself. It is also partly based on his life. The music is provided superbly by Shankar Jaikeshen and the songs are meaningful and with emotions and are sung by the late Mukesh. Even after all these years, when I listen to the songs, I still find them full emotions but still fresh as ever and especially:"Jeena Hana Marna Hana" and Jane Kahan Gaye Woh Din." They say that Mukesh was Raj Kapoor's voice on the screen and this movies proves it. On the whole this is one movie that is worth to watch.

Raj Kapoor' best ever
manishk2113 June 2009
I will not repeat the same thing which is already covered by others. Mera Naam Joker I would say Raj Kapoor's one of the finest work in his career. A series followed after Awara, Sree 420, and Jagte Raho. Infect in true senses he expressed his real tribute to himself, his career. Whatever he learned he put everything into this. The philosophy says "the show must go on" who knows more than an actor. So whether he is happy or sad or crying he should always look happy and never show traces of his personal anguish. Personally Raj Kapoor was inspired by Charley Chaplin's work and we get the glimpse in his early movies. His philosophy behind this movie is true and very natural. Lets discuss different stages one by one.

Episode I

Adolescent infatuation, his thoughts, his dreams are true and I must say everyone must have faced the same situation with his teacher when in school. His point here only depicts how a young developing mind fantasies. His gesture to present his idol joker to his teacher is a very philosophical thought that only a director like Raj Kapoor can think. He repeats the same with other two women and gets it back all the time.

Episode II

This version depicts the young and passionate love of joker Raju. He tried to show a person in this age group does not think anything other than love, he thinks for romance and fantasies. Here too joker loves, dreams and shows his innocent heart. Raj Kapoor gave his life's best performance as a young joker.

Episode III

I would say this part was the only reason for the movie's failure. People at that time were not used to see mature love story. It was the time when they were used to see Shammi Kapoor's kind of love stories with young and sweet actresses. Padmini's appearance in the last episode makes the movie relatively dull as she was not a very talented actress rather a great dancer. She was never successful in her career in Hindi movies. However Raj Kapoor acted very well in as mature joker. His philosophy extends in this one. As he shows every one is a joker in his life. Life is a stage and everyone needs to perform his part and continue with his journey.

The symbol joker was returned to him thrice as if his heart was given back. His last duologue touches the most when his says his play will not stop here this is just an interval , which may be for 15 min,15 hours or 15 months so please don't go away . He said whatever he wanted to convey from this movie . He tried to prove that from this movie joker's next phase starts and surely after that he never acted in his movies as a hero. He chose his next episode where joker was directing other jokers for his show. Certainly it is his autobiographical work. At last I must say no one can replace a director like Raj Kapoor.

One of the Best from RK Banner.
Herag11 September 2004
Warning: Spoilers
This is a great movie for people who appreciate films and great film makers-in the caliber of Raj Kapoor. RK banner, probably the single most banner, that stood for quality in Indian Films, so much so, the posters are selling at a high premium! Raj Kapoor, poured his heart and soul in making of this movie, almost bankrupting this flamboyant film Maker. The story is down to earth, one of the best non-fiction tale in the Indian films. This movie failed at the box-office mainly because of the inordinate length, even for the Indian audience of the 70s'. Acting wise Raj Kapoor, Simi Agarwal, Achala Sachdev stand out. Raj Kapoor had his actresses dress erotic and provocative but never vulgar or crude as in the current decadence seen in movies like "Boom" etc. Albeit, the actresses were invariably on the plump side or at least compared to the emaciated looks of current day actresses!

Actress Padmini, who starts of with a non glamorous role for an actress, along with Vijayantimala ("Sangam"), were two of the best classical dancers-which an average Westerner would neither appreciate nor has taste for. There were several moments of directorial brilliance as in any RK banner. Young Raju, exposed to the nude teacher, the filming of song "Jeena Yahan Marna Yahan"(sadly, this was the song that was played in Raj Kapoor's final journey, after he collapsed while receiving "Dada Saheb Phalke" Award-the highest honor-bestowed on a film-maker and died of asthma.) These are the scenes only A, Raj Kapoor could do and that made him one of the most beloved director/actor in the World and till this day brings happiness to the millions with his unique talent. Yes, the movie drags with some redundant song and dance numbers but then again, Raj Kapoor had passion for music and the music of Shankar-Jaikishan ("Sangam", "Shree 420", Barsaat", "Jis Desh Mei Ganga Bahti Hai",) was one of the selling point in his films. The duo and 'his soul' the singer Mukesh, never let him down till the end. There is nothing like a bad movie from Raj Kapoor. 'Mera Naam Joker' is not in the league of "Barsaat " "Awaara" or "Sangam" but it had his unique stamp.

Positively not a Negative Film. One Of The Most Difficult Film to Review.
SAMTHEBESTEST15 June 2020
Mera Naam Joker (1970) : Brief Views (Not A Review) -

Positively not a Negative Film. One Of The Most Difficult Film to Review. After watching almost 2000+ films and almost 400+ Classics from Bollywood and Hollywood Cinema finally i see the first ever challenge in Film Reviews where i am not able to Review the film freely. I can call it a 'Misunderstood Masterpiece' which it deserves but on the other side i can also call it a 'Lose Vision Film' with no hesitation. Legend Raj Kapoor directed total 10 films in his Remarkable career and 'Mera Naam Joker' was his Only Commercial Failure. His dream project became his only debacle because he tried to show something which was very heavy and difficult to understand for the audience of early 70s and it lacked the concrete vision. I myself will try to find out what really it is, did I really understand it or not. MNJ is a story of Raju who has a desire to become a clawn and make people laugh. This main theme of the film is at centre but the screenplay is split into three chapters of his life and unfortunately all three stories ride on three different directions leaving the main theme alone in the centre. First chapter is about Raju's teenage crush on his teacher and where he learns what a Joker actually means ending up with his decision about working as a Joker for lifetime. The 2nd chapter is about his circus life where he finally gets the chance to fulfill his desire of being a Joker. But again fate disappoints him as he Loses his Mother and lover and he decides to quit circus with the promise that he'll be back one day to give his Last shot. Third chapter is about his Manhood where he finds another love and another job which is again meant to leave him alone. Now these 3 periods of his life never ever say that, yes he's a Joker forever and he should live with this fact or he doesn't even remain a Joker consistently. He continues finding something else rather than finding his own and the only desire. The overlong story is fastly forwarded to save the time towards the end and leaves so many loopholes such as what did he actually do in those unknown 20 years of his life? Was he working somewhere or was he doing again the same thing? Did he marry someone or not and why? Why didn't he decided to be a Joker for once forever or quit forever? His all 3 Love partners couldn't fullfill his love life for particular reasons then where was he when he actually realised the sad fact of his life. Despite overlong runtime of 239 Minute film couldn't answer so many questions then what was the use of such a long narrative? Now coming to the philosophical side which i find very emotional and profound. I am assuming that the philosophy was about Raju himself living the fictional sorrowful life of Joker in real life. Yes, he didn't get happiness and so he is the Clawn and he has realised finally and that's why he throws out all his emotions and feelings in the climax scene saying, '"The Show hasn't ended, more fiasco to be continued". And then the credits at the end says, "Positively Not The End". This is something deep and so thoughtful. This literally stabbed knife into my heart. MNJ is a mixture of these 2 opposite theories and both works on high level. It is just a matter of perspective, if you're fan of emotions and philosophy then the Positive one will work for you and if you're fan of intelligent sentiments rather than unnecessarily stretched feeling then the Negative pole is for you. I am fully confused to give a rating and give final verdict to the film and I don't think i am gonna find the answer in future. I am not at all humiliated because it took a Genius like Raj Kapoor to confuse me. The legend was thinking much ahead of the time, even ahead of Hollywood while making MNJ. Let me talk a little about regular review stuff. Raj Kapoor as an Lead Actor did a fantastic job, supporting cast is good. Music is Superb no doubt one of the finest album of the decade. Production was Huge but unfortunately saw huge loss (RK covered it with Blockbuster 'Bobby' though). Direction wise, like i said Raj Kapoor lacked the Concrete vision to tell the story. He could have easily made it as One Correct Emotional Saga rather than unfolding chapters in overlong runtime. Suppose, If Raju lived his full life as a Joker making people laugh hiding his personal sadness (of course he will experience pain but in simple manners) behind the mask rather than those not so useful Love interests then i guess Mera Naam Joker would have been a Popular and Easily Understandable Classic. It was Huge Flop when released and we all know 'Public is Never Wrong' but later it gained a Cult Classic status by the same public. See, again confusion. On personal thoughts i still say it is either 9/10*, 10/10* film for the deep philosophy of endless pain OR it is 6/10* film because of those diversions in the screenplay and you MUST WATCH this just to find out on which side you are. If you find out adn understand this film then please get back to me. Those who gave High Rating have probably found out those profound facts and those who gave Negative rating had probably gone blaming those diversional and lost storytelling factors. Don't even bother asking, i strongly recommend this film because such kind of content in Commercial Film is never seen, even though my personal rating is not high but one thing is sure that I just can't get this film out of my mind, that's forever i mean.

RATING - 7/10*

The sad story of a funny clown through Raj Kapoor's extraordinary craftsmanship
Peter_Young27 March 2021
I can't imagine another director who was as in control of his craft as Raj Kapoor was. Mera Naam Joker is an example of superb cinema. You can like or dislike it but people who appreciate cinematic quality will not deny the heart, soul, technique, and the artistic intensity with which it was made. Now, this film is not easy viewing, it is very entertaining, but it requires patience and it is perhaps one of the saddest films one can say. It's not just about particular scenes, it is the melancholy that Kapoor infuses it with. The film is the story of Raju, a famous clown who arrives on stage to give the last performance of his career. His invitees include all his past love interests, each representing a story of either heartbreak or unrequited love, or both, and three main flashbacks presented in three chapters proceed.

Mera Naam Joker could be described as slice-of-life cinema, given how real and detailed an account it is of one man's life, but if taken literally this would be an understatement, because it's a whole lifetime that is recounted in this picture. I'm not sure why Kapoor chose to make this film so sad in story and execution, and I often wonder if it was the outcome rather than his intention. Mera Naam Joker, of course, like many other films by Kapor, has moments of comedy, many such moments actually, but even beneath all of them, there's a deeply poignant foundation. Ironically, among the toughest and most heartbreaking scenes take place within the circus and even during a seemingly funny performance on stage. Some of these scenes are so poignant they really are tough to go through.

The film's first chapter is one of the most beautiful, sensitive portrayals of teenage life, puberty, and first love ever portrayed on screen. The character of Raju, that clumsy but lovable young adult, who has a heart of gold and a vulnerable soul, is a perfect reflection of the older clown. The way his teenage days are depicted, including his falling in love with his teacher Mary, his sexual fantasies, innocence, feelings of guilt, and romantic realisation, are just extraordinary. Rishi Kapoor is absolutely outstanding in this film, in one of the most natural, amazingly raw and unaffected performances one can imagine by a young man his age. His love interest Simi Garewal is wonderful as his caring teacher, and it's easy to see how this teenager fell in love with her given both her physical appearance and the cordial warmth she exudes.

The second chapter, set within a circus where a group of Russian entertainers arrive, is fascinating. First, being a bilingual episode, it is very rare, but the cultural and linguistic contact between the Indian and the Russian group is stupendous. This is where our protagonist meets the beautiful trapezist Marina, and their relationship is so beautifully portrayed and ends on such a touching, heart-wrenching note. Kseniya Ryabinkina is beautiful and radiant and plays really well opposite Kapoor. The third chapter, while clearly not as good as the first two, is also very interesting, but concludes on the most annoying note in relation to the characters' moral stand and Raju's attitude of accepting injustice and moving on. Padmini, the talented actress who was an extraordinary dancer, is fantastic in her part as the young woman pretending to be a man.

It would be fair to say Kapoor was the one filmmaker of Hindi cinema who had this incredible ability to exploit the raw sexuality of his heroines, sometimes by doing so little and without ever making them look vulgar or cheap. Few scenes could compare to the moment Simi Garewal steps out of the river she fell into and the right tip of her dress reveals her leg, the proceeding scene where she is seen undressing in the bushes, or her nude shot in young Raju's fantasies, which is shot brilliantly. The same can be said about the aesthetic brilliance with which Kseniya Ryabinkina is shot, and the moment Padmini reveals her identity as a woman and wears her sari is a scene of extraordinary artistic merit. The women in this film by Kapoor are the epitome of feminine beauty, each in her own way, and much of how well their beauty was captured is to Kapoor's credit.

Under his own extraordinary direction, Raj Kapoor, the actor, shines through. He employs most of his regular gestures and mannerisms, his well-known flamboyance and innocence, but just like with his circus persona, what lies beneath the surface of this amusingly eccentric man is a truly authentic, heartbreaking and compassionate performance of a man who spent his life wanting to make others laugh and never quite got his due. Other than Rishi Kapoor and the extraordinary leading ladies, Rajendra Kumar is there, Dharmendra and Dara Singh make nice appearances, although the best are Achala Sachdev as Raju's mother who fears most that her son would be a clown like his father, and particularly Manoj Kumar, the teacher's cool fiancé who immediately recognises Raju's feelings for his wife and accepts it with full understanding.

The film's narrative style and high production values are never less than excellent. The cinematography is excellent, and the background score keeps tugging at the heartstrings as it enhances the situations and gives life to an otherwise difficult story. The music by Shakar-Jaikishen is a classic of Indian cinema. "Ae Bhai Zara Dekh Ke Chalo", "Kehta Hai Joker Sara Zamana", "Ang Lag Jaa Balma", are all melodious, beautiful numbers brilliantly and soulfully sung by Manna Dey, Mukesh, and Asha Bhosle, respectively. The film's trademark number, of course, is Mukesh's poignant rendition of "Jeena Yahan Marna Yahan". This song pretty much sums up what Mera Naam Joker is, the sad story of a funny clown, a difficult film to watch but an ultimately rewarding experience. This film is a true example of the craftsmanship of Raj Kapoor, a true showman of Indian cinema who reinforced time and again the high quality present in mainstream films.

A hypothetical autobiography
avisolo27 September 2002
Raj Kapoor presents an hypothetical autobiography of scathing power that might be his most uncompromising movie and true legacy. Rishi Kapoor plays the young Raj very convincingly and I found the first part to be the most refreshing and touching. The Joker's philosophy is true but does not have may buyers but use this movie as a grand scale memento mori. Check out Raj Kapoor's 'Jagte Raho' for a more devastating social critique. The film is unique for a true Indo-Russian love story and dialogue in Russian. Love and let live.

A great philosophy
h_thakor5 October 2005
One of the greatest films ever made in India. No film has ever evoked my heart to such an extent and it's philosophy is outstanding.THe musical theme is magnificent and the songs remarkable. The story of a clown making the world laugh while secretly brushing that tear from his eye is like re-writing the life of Charlie Chaplin in the Indian form. The symbol of the joker however is over repeated after the first part which partly created a monotony for viewers.

I can never forger the scene when he smiles with a tear in his eyes after removing his glasses telling Russian actress Marina in the Circus that he is not sad.It is an absolutely heart touching film unsurpassed in the annals of Indian film history.

Heartwarming
sourav89427 December 2011
Mera Naam Joker is certainly one of the most insightful, heart-warming commercial films made in India. This film shows Raj Kapoor's orientation towards world classics. The cinematography is Tarkovskyish, Raj Kapoor's performance draws heavily from Charlin Chaplin, while the ending reminds of Fellini's Otto e Mezzo. This is possibly the greatest semi auto-biographical film- portrays major part of a person's life. It is the Indian Citizen Kane! Where it stands different from Citizen Kane or Otto e mezzo is its inherent optimism, and its commercial value. Raj Kapoor is not hesitant to show small dances and partial melodrama, and the message is loud and clear- 'Life goes on'! The last story (meena) seems out of place initially in this long film, but starts making sense when it depicts Raju's loneliness correctly.

The scene that steals the show is where Raju's mother dies and yet Raju enters the ring dressed as a clown yelling for his mother, squirts water from his eyes, and starts playing his violin- a wonderful depiction of his showman spirit. This film has everything in place, and I can't help but call it- my favourite Raj Kapoor classic!

I want my 4 hours back!
harisamir-8302620 May 2021
This movie is nothing but an old overrated flick! The character lacked common sense and some of the scenes were so cliche and generic that made me loose all the interest in the movie. And an anti climatic end for a 4 hour long movie is an insult to injury.

Magnificent Movie
ufaiq66628 August 2006
Raj Kapoor always made movies with passion. This flick was simply one of them. He acted marvelously. The film had won 5 Filmfare Awards including National Award.

Acting and Direction:

Raj Kapoor's acting is outstanding and direction has no flaws. The young joker played by his youngest son Rishi Kapoor. Rishi Kapoor won National award for his performance. The direction is highly praising. To my mind, no other director in Bollywood could make such long film that entertaining as Raj Kapoor did.

Production and Editing:

R.K Films spent a lot of money for this film too. Raj Kapoor's editing was also excellent. No dragging scenes at all.

Lyrics and Music:

Lyrics were fine. Shanker-Jaikishan won the Filmfare Award for best music director. The song "KEHAT HAI JOKER SARA ZAMANA", "TEETAR KE DO AAGE TEETAR", "JEENA YAHAN MARNA YAHAAN", "AAY BHAI ZARA DEKHE CHALO", "JAANE KAHAAN GAAYE WOH DIN". Manna Dey won best playback singer award for AAE BHAI... I loved the music. I think it's still impossible to forget these songs.

Cast:

Good performances by all the cast including Manoj Kumar, Dharmendra, Dara Singh and Rajendra Kumar.

Message:

The movie conveys an optimistic message.

Raj Kapoor's masterpiece.
nadkarnisumeet19 December 2020
Mera Naam Joker review :

A film which truly defines the term 'cult classic'; Raj Kapoor's Mera Naam Joker was rejected by the audience on its initial release but is today, regarded as one of the greatest films made in Bollywood. A life story of a joker named Raju who falls in love with three different women at various stages of life; the film was semi biographical in nature and Raj Kapoor had invested a fortune on it.

Presented like a novel, the film had three chapters - let us analyse them one by one :

Chapter One : Raju (Young Rishi Kapoor) is a school kid who falls in love with his teacher (Simi Garewal). Manoj Kumar plays Simi's fiancè who befriends Raju and gifts him the toy clown which inspires him to become a circus joker - "Sab ko hasaane wala".

A chubby Rishi Kapoor was convincing in his first onscreen appearance (if you excuse his brief appearance as a toddler in Shree 420). Simi Garewal looked damn sexy and her strip scene created a furore back then.

Chapter Two : Like his dad, Raju (Raj Kapoor) grows up to become a clown in a Russian circus and it is here he meets trapeze artist (Kseniya Ryabinkina) and love blossoms despite the language barrier. In an unfortunate incident, Raju's mother dies while seeing him perform stunts on stage. In a heart-wrenching scene, Raju continues to perform his skit and make the audience laugh. Shortly later, the Russian artists go back home and Raju loses his love.

Raj Kapoor looked like a Russian himself in some of the scenes and he also shared a steamy kiss with his foreign co-actor. The 'Maa Maa' stage scene stays with you forever. Excellent direction!!

Dharmendra and Dara Singh added their star power in cameos as the circus owner and ringmaster, respectively.

Chapter Three : Raju is now a destitute and he befriends Meenu Master (Padmini) thinking she is a guy. After getting to know the truth, Raju's friendship transforms in to love. Meenu is an ambitious woman who aspires to be a film star. Raju helps her achieve her goal but loses his love again.

The buxom Padmini exposed a lot in this film - in fact, her breasts are clearly visible in one scene. After their blockbuster hit Sangam (1964), Raj Kapoor collaborated with Rajendra Kumar again who plays a movie star and Meenu's husband in a cameo.

Later, the older Raju calls the three ladies to attend his last circus show. He performs his final act and the film ends with "Positively Not The End" sign. Raj Kapoor had intended to make a sequel keeping Sharmila Tagore and Hema Malini in mind but dropped his plans after Joker flopped at the box office.

There are many reasons attributed to its commercial failure - primarily the four hour plus duration with two intervals which was too much for the audience. An abridged version of three hours was released in early 80s and that proved successful at the box office.

Any review on Mera Naam Joker would be incomplete without mention of Shankar Jaikishen's melodious tunes to Shailendra's immortal lyrics : "Jeena Yahan Marna Yahan. Iske siva jaana kahan". "Ae Bhai zara dekh ke chalo" and "Kehta Hai Joker.." are timeless classics underlining a deep rooted philosophy on life. In fact, the clown doll is a metaphor for Raju's pure heart which he keeps giving to his lady love only to find it return back to him. Like Guide (1965) and only like Guide, Mera Naam Joker is a philosophical take on human emotions. Both are my topmost favorite movies for this reason. Strongly recommended!!

Not worth it

Warning: Spoilers
Raj Kapoor has done better works before. Honestly, this movie is too long and too slow, with really bad cinematography and shaky cameras. The cinematography towards then end gets better however. Good concept, badly written and directed. I thought I was going to like it because my family and friends told me so, but honestly, it sucked big time. Too melodramatic- more mellow than dramatic. Two songs- "Jeena yahan, Marna Yahan," and "Jaane Kahan gaye Woh din" are really good. I guess that's the only attractive part of the film. There's an unattractive naked woman in the film too. God, I wish I could get the 3 hours of my life back.

"Mera Naam Joker" is a classic Hindi film released in 1970, directed by Raj Kapoor, who also stars in the lead role. The movie is a reflection on the life of a circus clown named Raju, played by Raj Kapoor, and his journey through various stages of his life.

The film is divided into three acts, each representing a different phase of Raju's life. The first act portrays Raju as a young boy growing up in a circus and discovering his talent for entertaining people. The second act follows Raju as a struggling adult, dealing with personal and professional challenges, and exploring his romantic relationships. The final act shows Raju as an older man, reflecting on his life and the choices he has made.

"Mera Naam Joker" is known for its poignant storytelling, emotional depth, and memorable performances. Raj Kapoor delivers a stellar performance as Raju, showcasing a wide range of emotions and capturing the complexities of his character. The movie also features an ensemble cast, including Simi Garewal, Dharmendra, and Padmini, who contribute to the narrative with their exceptional acting skills.

One of the standout aspects of the film is its music, composed by Shankar-Jaikishan. The songs, such as "Jeena Yahan Marna Yahan" and "Jaane Kahan Gaye Woh Din," have become iconic and are still cherished by audiences today. The music adds an additional layer of emotion and depth to the storytelling, enhancing the overall impact of the film.

"Mera Naam Joker" is a lengthy film, spanning over three hours, which might be a downside for some viewers. However, it is a beautifully crafted film that explores themes of love, loss, and the complexities of human relationships. It offers a deep insight into the life of an artist and raises questions about the true meaning of happiness.

Overall, "Mera Naam Joker" is considered a classic in Indian cinema and has garnered a cult following over the years. Its heartfelt storytelling, memorable performances, and soul-stirring music make it a must-watch for cinephiles and fans of Hindi cinema.

A Milestone for heartbreak !
WorldMovie9920 November 2022
The movie is long and has the potential to bore you. It doesn't have a single concrete storyline , rather shows the romantic adventure of Raju. Raju, the protagony encounters different women in his life. His relationships with all these women forms the story of film. The movie though long is technically a masterpiece. Raj Kapoor really contributed a master crafty work to Bollywood, from statement delivery, set designs, performance with casts choosen, costume designs, BGM and the narratives all reflects the visual maestro's. Two thumbs up for that.

The film gives a lot of message, the message of being good among bad, being selfless among selfishness, being humane among inhumanity. The characters are real though pessimistic and the performances are appealing, slow paced. The film is highly symbolic too. Raju works as a clown in a circus and entertains people. He represents Humanity's best, he makes others laugh which is one of the best job one could do to retain humane values. But the 20th century was a turbulent period where humanity was crushed in various ways. Raju too was a victim of such attacks, a victim of ever changing world of consumerism. He is the best person in the world , to be exact ; an artist , an ideal lover but was looked down upon , rebuked and rejected by the world. He is not materialistic unlike the world but is humane in all aspects. He explores and understands that all people in the world are hardline materialistic , selfish , incompassionate. His ideals were deemed meaningless and left him heart broke. Still he retains his humanity as the clown, a return to his father's footsteps, which will leave you speechless and sympathise with the character. The film clearly distinguish between good traits and bad which is shockingly convincing. The ending seem to me that humanity will always be the same , unchanging despite the inhuman world's pressure.

The film is directly influenced by the Soviet atmosphere and its implications on humanity, but it appropriately depicted the inhumanity. The exploited status of Raju could be interpreted as the common guy world whether from India or Soviet world. These was actually the scenario in 20th century, which is left for audiences to interpret. Raj Kapoor very masterfully has shown this aspect and definitely deserves a praise. Though this film flopped at the box office but qualitatively speaking it's a great film and ahead of it's time. The inhumane situation of entire humanity seems to get reduced to a single person in the film, which actually worked like a metaphor.

Summing it's a masterpiece of grief, a milestone of heartbreak and a tale of tears hiding under the attempt to smile. Such poetic film are not so available in the world. This deserves an international recognition and that too for right genre. A 99/100. Recommended for pessimism !

This is a terrible movie with great music
ramabommarajudmlsteeltech11 October 2018
This is the story of RajKapoor's life as he wants you to envision. He portrays as an innocent loving guy dumped by various women that he loved. His real life is quite the opposite. He used every famous heroine of the time- made a few movies and switched to the next girl.

Tragic romance fused with existentialism.
Sachin_Chavan13 February 2020
Raj Kapoor's best? May be. But surely different from all his other creations. A commercial flop, it's a movie that remains with you forever. The songs are legendary. Expect OTT acting in Kapoor's films, though Simi Grewal is a pleasant contrast. Despite usual titillations as Kapoor was prone to add, the movie tends to retains its integrity - that was Kapoor's hallmark.

A movie made in 1970 for 2021
mr-prth4 November 2021
I have seen the movie a couple of times and every time I see the movie, I say to myself, Who RajKapoor thought of to make such a great art.

Movie covered taboo topic too which was way too taboo for Indian audience.

The beauty of the movie is the timeline it goes thru, and the females who influenced the whole timeline.

Every single artist who worked in the movie was the best of their genre, from Manoj Kumar to Dara Singh to Mukri or even Rishi Himself and the young Raj Kapoor.

If u love cinema, u must watch this for once.
