Barbara Baldivan, a former actress who appeared on Star Trek before moving to behind-the-scenes work in casting, died at the age of 85 on Sunday, March 31. Her son, Marc D’Agosta, confirmed the news to The Hollywood Reporter. Her reported cause of death is heart failure. Baldivan’s former husband was Joseph D’Agosta, who was a casting director on Star Trek: The Original Series. She appeared in the show’s first season as Lieutenant Angela Martine, an officer in the Enterprise‘s crew whose wedding was upended by Romulans. In Season 3, she portrayed Lieutenant Lisa, a communications officer. Baldivan and D’Agosta also worked together on Wild Rovers. Baldivan’s television acting career spanned three decades, with her enjoying a bevy of guest roles in series like ABC’s The Fugitive and Fantasy Island, NBC’s Adam-12 and Columbo, CBS’s The F.B.I. and Barnaby Jones. Ryan O’Neal is dead at the age of 82 after years of health struggles. His son Patrick announced the news on Instagram.
O’Neal was one of the true heartthrobs of the New Hollywood era, making many who saw him in “Love Story,” “What’s Up Doc?,” “Barry Lyndon,” and “The Driver” swoon. He also was much more than a pretty face, showing a capacity to let the great directors of the era mold him into something so much more powerful than his looks. And his life was defined in some ways, also, by heartbreak and misfortune: the loss of his great love Farrah Fawcett in 2009, the years-long legal troubles of his son Redmond, the rupture of his relationship with son Griffin, and fraught connection to his daughter Tatum. He was a prickly icon, someone whose public statements and demeanor defied people to like him. But the films he leaves behind...

Laura Chinn has written for projects like "The Mick," "Children's Hospital," and "Florida Girls," which she created and starred in. She's also acted in projects like "Happy Endings," and "Warrior." If that wasn't enough, Chinn had a script selected for 2020's The Black List, a grouping of all the unproduced scripts of note from that year. That script is set to become the upcoming drama film "Suncoast," which will serve as Chinn's directorial debut, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Production for the new film will begin in September through Searchlight Pictures, with a number of big-name actors signing on for roles, including Woody Harrelson and Laura Linney. Laura Chinn recently published her memoir entitled "Acne" through Hachette Books, which scored a review blurb from Tina Fey ("30 Rock") on the cover.
Here is everything we know so far about the film "Suncoast."

James Olson, who starred opposite Joanne Woodward in 1968’s Rachel, Rachel, played a surgeon investigating a deadly alien organism in the 1971 sci-fi classic The Andromeda Strain and survived the notorious Broadway flop Breakfast at Tiffany’s starring Mary Tyler Moore that closed before it opened in 1966, has died. Great news for fans of offbeat 70s westerns! William Holden in Wild Rovers will soon be available on Blu-ray From Warner Archives. Pre-order information can be found Here.
Lifelong ranch hand Ross Bodine decides cowpunching is no kind of life. So he and a raw cowboy half his age rob a bank to get the cash each needs to improve his lot. An indignant posse is soon in pursuit. Filmmaker Blake Edwards made his name with The Pink Panther and other comedies, but he also showed great skill in other genres with the thriller Experiment in Terror, the drama Days of Wine and Roses and this nuanced paean to the West. In performances perfectly matching Edwards’ balance of rowdy comedy and hardscrabble period realism, William Holden and Ryan O’Neal play the fugitive saddlebums, with Holden drawing special praise. “As he grows older, he grows better like a great old wine.

William Holden movies: ‘The Bridge on the River Kwai’ William Holden is Turner Classic Movies’ "Summer Under the Stars" featured actor today, August 21, 2013. Throughout the day, TCM has been showing several William Holden movies made at Columbia, though his work at Paramount (e.g., I Wanted Wings, Dear Ruth, Streets of Laredo, Dear Wife) remains mostly off-limits. Right now, TCM is presenting David Lean’s 1957 Best Picture Academy Award winner and all-around blockbuster The Bridge on the River Kwai, the Anglo-American production that turned Lean into filmdom’s brainier Cecil B. DeMille. Until then a director of mostly small-scale dramas, Lean (quite literally) widened the scope of his movies with the widescreen-formatted Southeast Asian-set World War II drama, which clocks in at 161 minutes. Even though William Holden was The Bridge on the River Kwai‘s big box-office draw, the film actually belongs to Alec Guinness’ Pow British commander and to...

Julie Andrews admits she's regarding the end-of-year holidays with a "bittersweet" feeling.
The much-beloved, Oscar-winning star of such screen classics as "The Sound of Music" and "Mary Poppins" is approaching the Dec. 15 anniversary of the 2010 death of her husband: Blake Edwards, the hugely versatile filmmaker whose movies ranged from "Breakfast at Tiffany's" and "Experiment in Terror" to "Days of Wine and Roses" and "The Pink Panther."
And with Andrews, he made several more enduring pictures including "Victor/Victoria," "10" and "S.O.B.," a wickedly biting Hollywood satire. "He had six ideas a day," Andrews tells Zap2it, "and one never knew quite what was going to happen next. The thing that amazed me about him, in terms of his work, was how varied it was.

We've just received word from film historian and archivist Thomas Hauerslev regarding this year's 70mm film festival in Germany. As usual, there are some rare screenings of worthy films that are rarely shown elsewhere. Included is a showing of the only known 70mm print of Kelly's Heroes, a film near and dear to Cinema Retro as evidenced by our current special Movie Classics edition dedicated to the movie. Also being shown is Samuel Bronston's criminally underrated 1963 epic 55 Days At Peking starring Charlton Heston, Ava Gardner and David Niven as well as Blake Edwards' Western Wild Rovers starring William Holden and Ryan O'Neal. There are plenty of other exciting films in the line-up. Click here for full schedule.

It’ll be safer than getting married.
When I first heard about this film, it was when I was being sent a review disc from the Warner Archive. A Blake Edwards film that was a western? How hadn’t I ever heard of this film before. Known for his off the wall comedies, Wild Rovers is a peculiar departure in his filmography. Coming off of a $25 million dollar flop in 1970 called Darling Lili, Edwards’ next film was this one, which was supposed to originally me close to a three hour roadshow. Sadly for Edwards, MGM took control of the film in post production and cut it down to 106 minutes, which put a heavy burden on Edwards in general.
Luckily in 1986, the film was restored to a lengthier 136 minute running time, this time with the originally intended overture, intermission card and exit music. Thankfully for the restoration and Warner Archive for releasing this version,...

Alex aka BBats here. It’s Ryan O’Neal’s 70th birthday today! He’s always been one of my favorite actors. In a few great movies, he showed incredible range and unbelieveable charisma. After a few years of doing guest roles on television, O’Neal became a bankable star after Peyton Place's popular run. The Big Bounce (1969) was his first starring role in a film, but he’ll be remembered as bursting through to superstardom for Love Story (1970).
Everyone’s seen Paper Moon (1973) and everyone should watch it again. (Its streaming on Instant Netflix, so no excuses!) His collaborations with Peter Bogdonavich coincide with the peak of his career. Look at his filmography in the 1970’s. It is an amazing assembly of films!
I must confess that I still haven’t seen Stanley Kubrick's Barry Lyndon (1975). I have a firm belief that one day some repertoire movie...

[Editor's Note: While the Amazon link to the left will work, Wild Rovers is a made-to-order DVD offered primarily through the WB Shops Archive Collection.]
Blake Edwards appeared to be in love with the John Ford and John Sturges westerns and made Wild Rovers as a way get the itch out of his system. Edwards wrote, directed and produced this dream epic of his—the only western he’s ever directed in his celebrated career despite writing a couple of them very early on. Wild Rovers is not one of his more remembered achievements, but that perhaps has more to do with its history of mishandling than its quality. That’s not to say, however, that the film’s quality is worthy of reverence. It’s pleasant to watch, but never goes any further than scratching its surface. In the long list of worthy westerns, it simply doesn’t place.
If you see the exultant DVD cover and assume that this is some kind of proto-Brokeback Mountain, then first of all, you’re pretty immature; but secondly,...

Though Sam Peckinpah’s The Wild Bunch wasn’t the first film to respond skeptically to romanticized visions of the American West, it made a powerful enough impression to inspire a volley of likeminded Westerns. That’s partly because, beneath the blood and sand, Peckinpah offered a beguiling sort of romanticism of his own with his fatalistic vision of beautiful losers refusing to fade gently into the past. The flawed, intriguing, and largely forgotten 1971 Blake Edwards effort Wild Rovers—available through the Warner Archive imprint—doesn’t imitate Peckinpah’s style, but tries to capture some of the same ...

Film director best known for the Pink Panther, Breakfast at Tiffany's and 10
The film-maker Blake Edwards, who has died aged 88, will be best remembered as the creator of the Pink Panther films, and as the husband of the entertainer Julie Andrews. But Edwards was a third-generation show-business figure whose complex and controversial career spanned more than 50 years, initially as an actor and writer and subsequently as one of America's most prolific producer-directors, primarily concerned with the popular genres of comedy and musicals and with creating television series.
Despite working in mainstream cinema, his maverick spirit and ego made him an uneasy partner with Hollywood studios. He famously savaged the hand that had fed him so well with S.O.B. (1981), a raucous, vitriolic attack on Tinseltown. His sophisticated work drew strongly on his love of early cinema (his stepgrandfather had directed silent films), and on his own life and psychological problems (he...
