Pema Tseden (པད་མ་ཚེ་བརྟན།), born in 1969, is the first Tibetan alumni of the prestigious Beijing Film Academy graduating from the director’s department. He also studied Chinese-Tibetan translation and worked as a teacher and a civil servant. He is not only a sensitive and highly regarded director, portraying the modern Tibet with attention, accuracy and poetic touch, but also an esteemed writer, whose works have been translated into several languages. Although portraying ethnic minorities is a delicate topic in China, so far he has managed to deal with censors well, as all of his movies got approval. “The Silent Holy Stones”, his debut feature-length film in 2005, the very first feature shot in Tibet with a Tibetan crew, Tibetan actors and in Tibetan language. His following films got selected at international film festivals. As a fiction author, he both writes in Chinese and Tibetan. His books have been translated in several languages.

These barren climes do not forgive – the cruelty in this domain speaks with a wisdom as old as the Achaen Era and just as ferocious. That life seems to cling on here and has done for centuries, no matter how sparsely, is a miracle unto itself. Cold and rugged, these steppes are enveloped by tumultuous winds seemingly with the power to carve into rock and bury their secrets deep within, left dormant for an age until their designated recipient stumbles upon them. These winds do not whisper either – they howl; without layer upon layer of covering all life here would be stripped off flesh until only the hollowness of the wayward spirit is all that remains. Either that or it is frozen in its tracks. It is within such a harsh setting that Tibetan-born director Pema Tseden took his first steps on his filmic journey with a tale as spiritual as it is muted.

From Thomas F Wilson in Back To The Future to Nicolas Cage and John Travolta in Face/Off - when actors play multiple roles...
The dramatic use of actors playing multiple characters is a bold and rather theatrical device that has its ups and downs. It goes at least as far back as Captain Hook being played by the same actor who plays the Darling children's father in stage productions of Peter Pan, a technique largely adopted in film adaptations of the story, too (hello to Jason Isaacs).
It's used a lot in cinema too. Done well, it's impressive, but when it's bad, it's Jack & Jill. Whether used in comedy or drama or outright horror, there are countless examples of actors delivering terrific performances in more than one role at once, and that's before we even get past Cloud Atlas. Still, we've had a go at totting up 25 of the best.

Earlier today we alerted you to the special Halloween screenings at the American Cinematheque. They aren't the only Halloween game in Los Angeles. Cinefamily has announced their 30 midnights program for Halloween. Last year the focus was on video nasties; this year it is the United States of Horror, a "cross-country death trip, with each night celebrating a different state of the Union, and regional horror filmmaking of all stripes. Whether it's unknown directors toiling away on backyard labors of love, or itinerant auteurs falling in love with and shooting an unfamiliar landscape as if it was their own, this series' thirty entries provide a vibrant overview of our nation's hidden horror history." Sounds way safer than taking an actual roadtrip.

As American networks look north for inexpensive series for summer fair, NBC has set its sights on sexy Canadian medical series Saving Hope. I wouldn't find it remarkable, but it stars Stargate's Michael Shanks, and he always gave me a nerd boner.
Production on Akira has stopped, but depending on who you read, it's either dead, or just being retooled and rebudgeted.
When I saw a headline that a Dukes of Hazard alumn was joining The Young & The Restless, I assumed it was Tom Wopat or John Schneider. So it was a complete shock to find that Daisy Duke was headed to Genoa City.
Daniel Radcliff tells Parade that "I'm not an easy person to love." I'm willing to give it a try if he is.
Did you hear Tennessee was crafting a bullying bill that says bullying is bad unless you're doing it for deep-seated convictions? So if your...
