Epistolary storytelling has been immersing readers in fiction since the very dawn of literature. Using simulated letters, diaries and other documents to craft complex tales with shifting points of view, the format inevitably ended up attracting inventive filmmakers who realized that it could be adapted into a cinematic tool to instill terror. From The McPherson Tape to The Blair Witch Project, Found Footage movies have kept the epistolary tradition alive through their use of faux home video and other diegetic media.
However, with over four decades of Found Footage experiments out there, the genre has seen quite a bit of innovation. Personally, I think one of the most interesting off-shoots of Found Footage is the ongoing trend of Screenlife films, where the entire narrative is told within the confines of digital screens. While this curious format has only recently become popular in mainstream media, it’s actually older than most people seem to realize,...

Film producer Martin Poll has died at age 89. Poll started in the film industry producing Flash Gordon shorts in Europe before moving to New York and renovating the old Biograph Studio and renaming them Gold Medal Studios. For a time, the facility was very successful and became known as the largest film production facility outside of Hollywood. However, it was as a producer that Poll found his greatest success, including his classic film adaptation of The Lion in Winter. The acclaimed 1968 film, directed by Anthony Harvey, won an Oscar for Katharine Hepburn. Other film credits include The Man Who Loved Cat Dancing, The Possession of Joel Delaney, Night Watch, Nighthawks, Love and Death and The Sailor Who Fell From Grace With the Sea. Poll also served as commissioner of motion picture arts for New York City. For more click here...

Peter O'Toole, Katharine Hepburn, The Lion in Winter Martin Poll, best known for producing Anthony Harvey's 1968 Best Picture Oscar nominee The Lion in Winter, starring Katharine Hepburn as Eleanor of Aquitaine and Peter O'Toole as King Henry II, died of "natural causes" on April 14 according to various online sources. Poll was 89. An Avco Embassy release, The Lion in Winter was considered the favorite for the Best Picture and Best Director Oscars. The film had won the Best Film Award from the New York Film Critics Circle, while Harvey was the year's Directors Guild Award winner. However, Carol Reed's Columbia-distributed musical Oliver! turned out to be the winner in both categories. (Curiously, the previous year another Embassy release, Mike Nichols' The Graduate, unexpectedly lost the Best Picture Oscar to Norman Jewison's United Artists-distributed In the Heat of the Night. But at least Nichols came out victorious.

I cannot cannot cannot express my sadness at the passing of such a vibrant, powerful, charismatic, and tumultuous woman as Elizabeth Taylor.
Only 79, Taylor died peacefully today in Cedars-Sinai Hospital in Los Angeles, California, where she has been suffering from congestive heart failure for over 6 weeks.
Taylor didn't really become the provocative actress you know her as today until she was well into her 30s and beyond, though she started acting at 12. She explored sadness, horror, pain, fear, sexuality, and she lived it through her profoundly passionate life.
In Butterfield 8, she plays a woman who screws and drinks, before women screwing and drinking was acceptable, and her character deals with this contradiction in a most unflattering and earth-shattering way:
In Who's Afriad of Virginia Woolf and Taming of the Shrew, her real-life passion for husband Richard Burton was behind every kiss, every slap, every malicious barb and gentle whisper:...

Montgomery Clift, Elizabeth Taylor in George Stevens‘ A Place in the Sun Elizabeth Taylor can be found in 11 movies to be presented on Turner Classic Movies on Monday, Aug. 23, as part of TCM’s "Summer Under the Stars" series. [Elizabeth Taylor schedule.] Curiously, even though Taylor is one of the biggest movie stars ever, she did appear in a few (to the best of my knowledge) still hard-to-find titles. Is Franco Zeffirelli‘s Young Toscanini (1988) available on home video in the Us? Are Night Watch (1973) and Ash Wednesday (1973) easily available? Unfortunately, none of those titles will be shown on TCM, but there’s one that most people probably haven’t heard of despite its stellar cast: Brian G. Hutton‘s X, Y & Zee (1971), a bizarre psychological drama in which Taylor co-stars with Michael Caine and Susannah York. Though hardly what I’d call a great film, X, Y & Zee is [...]...

The news and photos just keep comin’ in from the currently lensing (in Britain) remake of 1976’s EXPOSÉ (a.k.a. The House On Straw Hill). This morning, producer Jonathan Sothcott sent along the first still of actress Linda Hayden (see below), who’s returning from the original (pictured at left).
“We are all thrilled to have Linda on board,” Sothcott tells Fango. “In addition to being the star of the classic version, she’s a terrific actress who has worked alongside Liz Taylor, Peter Finch and Vincent Price, and a true British genre icon. In the new movie, she meets a very grisly end: Her character literally gets a hammering. Linda is a pal from way back and it has been great having her on set; the rest of the cast love her to bits, and she has been a real trouper through some very cold night shoots.”
