Following the success of Jonathan Demme's "The Silence of the Lambs" in 1991, Hollywood released an eight-year-long tidal wave of serial killer thrillers, each one pulpier than the last. This was the era of "Seven," "Copycat," "Along Came a Spider," "Jennifer 8," "See No Evil," "Eye of the Beholder," "Sliver," "Knight Moves," and any number of others. Right at the end of the decade came Phillip Noyce's 1999 thriller "The Bone Collector," based on the airport novel by Jeffery Deaver. Deaver's original novel was the first of the long-running Lincoln Rhyme series, a series that saw its 16th installment published in 2023. Lincoln Rhyme, thanks to a spinal accident, could not move his body below his neck, and fought crime from his bed, deducting details, looking at pictures, and relying on his team.
In the film adaptation, Denzel Washington played Lincoln Rhyme and Angelina Jolie played his plucky crime fighting partner Amelia Donaghy.

Al Pacino had one of the most stunning decades of acting of all time in the 1970s. Exploding onto the scene with his work in The Godfather, Pacino would’ve already been a mighty acting titan if he just had those two Godfather titles under his belt. However, buoyed by the success of that feature, Pacino went on to headline motion pictures like Dog Day Afternoon and Serpico that would define him as a silver screen legend. Believe it or not, Pacino almost anchored another massive 1970s classic, one that would’ve even surpassed The Godfather in terms of box office appeal and public ubiquity. That feature was Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope, the original Star Wars in 1977.

Ava DuVernay has only made five narrative features, but she’s one of the busiest women in Hollywood.
Before 2023, the California-born filmmaker’s last feature was her “A Wrinkle in Time” adaptation, released in theaters in 2018 — a five-year gap between releases that’s partially attributable to projects that sputtered in development like DC’s “New Gods” film and a Prince biopic. And yet, DuVernay has remained a constant presence during that relatively long gap, translating her numerous talents to producing and TV work. She created and directed the acclaimed Netflix miniseries “When They See Us,” about the controversial Central Park Five case. Several other TV projects followed, including OWN’s “Cherish the Day,” Netflix’s “Colin in Black and White,” and The CW’s “Naomi.” But while many of those projects have been terrific, it’s great to see the director of great films like “Middle of Nowhere” and “Selma...

Following The Film Stage’s collective top 50 films of 2023, as part of our year-end coverage, our contributors are sharing their personal top 10 lists.
In 2023, I wanted to laugh. Perhaps more than I realized, because when I finally calculated my top-rated films that came out this year, a great portion of my selections turned out to be either straight-up comedies or gripping comedy-dramas. 2023 was the year I embraced funny and moving movie coming-of-age stories probably more than any other, but to me, that genre isn’t only limited to what happens when 11-year-old girls experience their period for the first time or when Elvis Presley decides to take a child bride. For example, Paul Giamatti’s acidic classics teacher experiences something like a middle-aged puberty when he’s forced to care for an abandoned prep school kid during Christmas break in The Holdovers. In Beau is Afraid, we watch a stunted...

The Academy picked the right year to give an Honorary Oscar to film editor Carol Littleton. They’re saluting a female editor at a time when three of the year’s major awards contenders —“Killers of the Flower Moon,” “Oppenheimer” and “Maestro” — are edited by Thelma Schoonmaker, Jennifer Lame and Michelle Tesoro, respectively, and when other women in the mix include Hilda Rasula for “American Fiction,” Victoria Boydell for “Saltburn,” Sarah Flack for “Priscilla” and co-editors Claire Simpson (with Sam Restivo) for “Napoleon” and Oona Flaherty (with Nick Moore) for “Are You There, God? It’s Me, Margaret.”
“The Editors Guild has about 2,900 picture editors, and 764 women,” said Littleton, a one-time president of that guild. “That’s about a fourth. So isn’t it interesting that these three big prestigious films, ‘Oppenheimer,’ and ‘Killers of the Flower Moon’ and ‘Maestro,’ are edited by women?”

Sidney Lumet was one of the preeminent New Hollywood directors, responsible for classics like 12 Angry Men, Serpico, and Dog Day Afternoon. He was trained during the golden age of television in the 1950s, which shaped his energetic, collaborative filmmaking style and his preference for realistic storytelling. His movies are usually character studies or psychological dramas, frequently exploring themes of family life and justice, often involving the legal system and the media. He was also infatuated with New York City, using it as the setting for most of his films.

Director Sideny Lumet's Dog Day Afternoon is a seminal American crime film. In telling the true story of two hapless men whose attempted bank robbery went awry, Lumet and screenwriter Frank Pierson crafted a darkly comedic and strangely touching tale. Al Pacino, in perhaps one of the greatest performances of his legendary career, portrays Sonny, a down-on-his-luck New Yorker who hopes to steal enough money so that his spouse can undergo sex-reassignment surgery.

Al Pacino is one of those actors who hardly needs an introduction, considering he's been a widely celebrated film star for over half a century at this point. He rose to fame on screen in the early 1970s, largely thanks to his incredible work in The Godfather and The Godfather: Part II, two all-time great crime epics that both won Best Picture and saw Pacino get Oscar nominations. Various other iconic movies Pacino appeared in also belong to the crime/gangster genres, including Dog Day Afternoon, Scarface, and Heat.

In the most shockingly funny moment of Alexander Payne’s “Sideways,” Miles Raymond, the desperate English teacher and wine aficionado played by Paul Giamatti, has just learned that his book was turned down by the publisher he had his hopes pinned on. It’s more than a rejection; it’s the death of his dream. Miles is in the middle a chi-chi Napa Valley wine tasting, and suddenly he’s in dire need of a drink. He asks the bartender for a glass of red, but all the man will pour him is a “taste.” Miles offers to pay for a full glass, but no go: That would be breaking the rules. It’s like the side-order-of-toast scene in “Five Easy Pieces,” only what happens here is three times as explosive. Miles grabs the bottle on the bar and pours himself a drink, and he and the bartender wind up wrestling over it.

Chris Sarandon would consider reprising his role as Detective Mike Norris in Child's Play, but believes that Norris is currently retired. Sarandon was hooked after reading the screenplay for Fright Night, and that collaboration led to him teaming up again with director Tom Holland on Child's Play. John Cazale had a brief but incredible film career, appearing in five films that all earned Best Picture nominations and are considered some of the greatest films of the 20th century. Despite his success in film, Cazale remained committed to his work as a stage actor and appeared in two theater productions with close friend Al Pacino. Cazale met Meryl Streep while working on a theater production and they became romantically involved, remaining together until the end of Cazale's life. He continued to act in his final film, The Deer Hunter, despite being diagnosed with terminal lung cancer.
John Cazale boasts a brief yet flawless and prestigious film career, one that allowed the actor to make an indelible mark on history, despite being taken too young. The “New Hollywood” era, which hit its full stride with the creator-driven studio films of the 1970s, introduced audiences to some of the greatest screen actors of all time.

The cast of the horror film Fright Night has experienced varying levels of success since its release in 1985, with some achieving cult status and others finding success in other areas beyond film. Chris Sarandon, known for his role in Dog Day Afternoon, went on to star in other iconic films and has found continued success in New York theater. He also started a podcast about cooking in 2022.

We’ve talked about Stephen King as the king of horror literature, but there’s another name who is pretty important in the grand scheme of horror. He has had tabletop games, video games, comic book adaptations, and movies made after his work. He has sort of become like John Carpenter in a way. You hear all the time how a movie, or its score in particular, is Carpenter-esque and that has happened to one Howard Phillips Lovecraft. He only lived to 46 and had many works published after his death, but also is the man behind the old gods and the Cthulhu mythos. Even when filmmakers and game designers don’t use creations directly from the author’s work, a lot of horror can be considered Lovecraftian. While some of the more famous ones like Re-Animator and From Beyond are stone cold classics, I wanted to look at an underseen adaptation.

What a thrill it must be as an actor to be in a film that becomes a contender for the Academy Award for Best Picture. A few even develop such an impressive resume that they have seven, eight, nine, or more of these credits to their names. Who are the actors who have starred in the most number of Best Picture nominees?
Many of the performers on this list are not a surprise, with multi-Oscar-winners such as Meryl Streep, Robert De Niro, Cate Blanchett and Bette Davis making the cut. But there are also some fine character actors who appeared in hundreds of films over careers that spanned decades, including Henry Travers (Clarence the angel from “It’s a Wonderful Life) and Thomas Mitchell (Scarlett O’Hara’s dad from “Gone with the Wind”). Mitchell was such a sought-after actor, he appeared in five of the Best Picture nominees in 1940 and 1941. Two...

Directed by Brian De Palma from a screenplay by Oliver Stone, this is among the most famous gangster movies ever made. Of course, Scarface (1983) stars Al Pacino as Tony Montana, with the film chronicling his infamous rise and sudden fall as a drug lord out of Miami. A film of the same name was released several decades before, with Scarface (1932) seeing direction under Howard Hawkes. Despite holding far less name value in today's landscape, the original adaptation his actually held in higher regard. At least, in the eyes of industry pundits.
But nowadays, De Palma's iteration boasts one of the strongest cult statuses out of any film from the 1980s. It's a widely recognized piece, and it remains an essential film in the respective careers of everyone involved. Forty years down the line, even. Its release by De Palma is almost as popular as the plot itself, and the characters that lie within.

The beginning of a film often teaches us how to watch that particular movie. What to expect and how to enjoy the story Some movies are quite straightforward in their storytelling. They remove all the extra fat from the plot and just plunge us into the action. The new Swedish film A Day and a Half, by debutant director Fares Fares, is never interested in setting up characters or the backstory. It kicks off right in the middle of the plot. There is a thrill to this kind of approach to narrative. And surely, the audience is hooked. At least I was. But is this the only vision through which the film could have delivered its maximum impact?
A Day and a Half begins with the tension of a live wire. A man walks into a hospital to speak to his ex-wife, who works there as a nurse. The man...

Nancy Buirski, a PGA Award winner who produced the 2016 film Loving that was inspired by her documentary, directed several films including last year’s Desperate Souls, Dark City and the Legend of Midnight Cowboy and founded the Full Frame Documentary Film Festival, died August 29. Her company Augusta Films announced the news but did not provide details.
Buirski began her career as photographer and photo editor for The New York Times and in 1998 founded the Full Frame Documentary Film Festival, which she would lead for a decade. Her first directing job was on The Loving Story (2011), a documentary about Richard and Mildred Loving, an interracial couple who married in 1958 without knowing their union was illegal in Virginia, where they lived and went on to face an ultimately successful legal journey that went all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court in 1967 as Loving v Virginia.

Between the years 1972 and 1975, Al Pacino went on a run that could very easily be considered the best four-year run of any film actor's career with just as many outstanding roles in unforgettable movies. It started with The Godfather and ended with Dog Day Afternoon. Nestled in between the two great Godfather films in 1973 is another terrific performance in Serpico. It is the true story of Frank Serpico, a New York City cop who goes undercover and ends up exposing widespread police corruption going on throughout the city. It's a bit of an outlier within the four projects in that it's the only one that is a true story where he plays a morally squared-away good guy and not in the role of either a criminal or the don of a mafia family. It was a bit of a risk for Pacino who had obviously just smacked a grand slam...

Martin Brest's "Scent of a Woman" was one of the most critically acclaimed films of 1992. Powered by an emotionally raucous screenplay from the late, great Bo Goldman, it's probably best remembered 31 years later for the hoo-hahing performance showcase that earned Al Pacino the Best Actor Oscar he should've won for, take your pick, "The Godfather Part II," "Serpico" or "Dog Day Afternoon." This is unfair. The film does run a tad long, and concludes with a conventional stand-up-and-cheer monologue from Pacino, but the length is excusable because Brest gives his best moments, most of which arrive during the film's second act, an abundance of oxygen. He lets his actors explore, which was catnip for Pacino and a blessing for his 22-year-old co-star Chris O'Donnell.

Heist films can trace their cinematic lineage back to the earliest days of film history. Edwin S. Porter's iconic silent film The Great Train Robbery, released in 1903, features several elements that are now commonplace in the heist genre.
By the late 1940s, movies such as The Killers and Criss Cross began shaping the structure of what heist films would become. In 1950, the heist genre entered the mainstream with the release of John Huston's The Asphalt Jungle, a movie many critics consider the first official heist film. Since 1950, the heist film has emerged as one of the most popular subgenres of crime movies.

It was more than a little heartening to see Roger Corman paid tribute by Quentin Tarantino at Cannes’ closing night. By now the director-producer-mogul’s imprint on cinema is understood to eclipse, rough estimate, 99.5% of anybody who’s touched the medium, but on a night for celebrating what’s new, trend-following, and manicured it could’ve hardly been more necessary. Thus I’m further heartened seeing the Criterion Channel will host a retrospective of Corman’s Edgar Allan Poe adaptations running eight films and aptly titled “Grindhouse Gothic,” though I might save the selections for October.
Centerpiece, though, is a hip hop series including Bill Duke’s superb Deep Cover, Ghost Dog, and numerous documentaries––among them Beats, Rhymes & Life: The Travels of a Tribe Called Quest, making Michael Rapaport a Criterion-approved auteur. Al Pacino, the man who has played ambitious gangsters, tough cops, and even the Devil, could have been even more famous had he not rejected some iconic roles. The Oscar winner is synonymous with legendary characters like mafioso Michael Corleone in The Godfather trilogy, druglord Tony Montana in Scarface and bank robber Sonny Wortzik in Dog Day Afternoon. The method actor has not just played criminals as he has also delivered memorable performances like the cranky retired Army lieutenant colonel Frank Slade in Scent of a Woman, notorious McCarthy-era lawyer Rob Cohn in Angels in America and profane real estate salesman Richard Roma in Glengarry Glen Ross.
The long list of Al Pacino roles is also diverse enough to include critical duds like Jack & Jill in which he played a fictionalized version of himself, and Gigli in which he played the cartoonish mob boss Starkman. His filmography, however, could...

Al Pacino says he doesn’t remember much of the 1970s. So, The Godfather, Serpico, Scarecrow, Dog Day Afternoon, …And Justice For All are some of the greatest movies ever, let alone of the 1970s: all a blur. But unfortunately, he remembers Gigli and 88 Minutes, Revolution, Righteous Kill, and too many more all too well. He is a guy that always goes over the top, and sometimes it results in brilliance and other times, it causes Mr. Pacino to become a parody of himself. Summer movie season has officially begun at multiplexes everywhere, but the start of June also brings four indie titles to digital platforms. Our pick is a quiet drama that reaches beyond the standard mother-daughter dynamics commonly seen onscreen.
The contender to watch this week: “Monica”
After breakthrough supporting parts in “Transparent” and “Hustlers,” Trace Lysette finally gets the lead role she has deserved. Lysette is enchanting in “Monica,” playing a transgender massage therapist who reluctantly returns home to care for her estranged mother (Patricia Clarkson). After premiering at last year’s Venice Film Festival and gaining a fair amount of indie cred during its theatrical rollout in May, this is the type of movie that could very well show up on the Independent Spirit Awards’ roster. Rent it on VOD.

Dog Day Afternoon (1975) June 1
Dog Day Afternoon has a marvelous cast that delivers beyond expectations. Director Steven Lumet once again enlists Al Pacino and John Cazale, with the two having starred in The Godfather: Part II the previous year. Pacino maintains the calmness and resourcefulness he demonstrated while playing Michael Corleone whereas Cazale switches things up to become a timid bank robber whose terrible fate audiences can see coming from early on.
