Heading into the 2024 Golden Globes on Sunday, January 7, “Succession” was the show to beat as it scored a record nine nominations — more than any other television show in history. But which shows ended up being the big winners during the three-hour ceremony?
Best TV Movie/Limited Series Actress was the first TV category handed out this year, and it went to Ali Wong (“Beef”), who is also predicted to prevail at next week’s Emmys. She beat out Riley Keough (“Daisy Jones & the Six”), Brie Larson (“Lessons in Chemistry”), Elizabeth Olson (“Love and Death”), Juno Temple (“Fargo”) and Rachel Weisz (“Dead Ringers”).

Every year, some breakout names emerge victorious at various awards groups on just their first nominations. Last year, Michelle Yeoh and Ke Huy Quan won Golden Globes for “Everything Everywhere All at Once” while Austin Butler also won on his first bid, for “Elvis.” This year, several performers are in with a good chance of following in these performers’ footsteps and triumphing on their first nominations, too. Here are the most likely to win.
Lily Gladstone — “Killers of the Flower Moon”
Lily Gladstone stars in Apple Original Films’ “Killers of the Flower Moon,” which tells the true story of the murders of Osage tribe members in the south of the USA in the 1920s. FX’s “Fargo” is facing some tough competition at the Golden Globes this year in the form of Netflix’s “Beef.” Noah Hawley‘s anthology limited series follows a different cast and storyline every season with the latest installment, the fifth season, featuring the likes of Jon Hamm, Juno Temple, and Jennifer Jason Leigh. This story follows a kidnapping gone wrong that leads to implications for many.
This season has fared well, garnering three Golden Globe nominations: Best Limited Series/TV Movie, Best Limited Series/TV Movie Actor for Hamm, and Best Limited Series/TV Movie Actress for Temple. These two acting bids add to the Golden Globes history of “Fargo,” which has often done well in snagging nominations for its cast. Here’s the breakdown.
The first season saw Billy Bob Thornton win Best Limited Series/TV Movie in 2015 while co-star Martin Freeman was also nominated in the same category.

U.K. public service broadcaster ITV launched proprietary streamer Itvx almost exactly 12 months ago with a star-studded event in London featuring talent including Helen Bonham Carter (the lead in Itvx original “Nolly”) and “Without Sin” star Vicky McClure.
Signalling its commitment to the new platform (which replaced much-maligned catch-up service ITV Hub), ITV CEO Carolyn McCall also directed $1.6 billion into original content for Itvx in 2023 alone, a bold move which briefly hit the company’s share price. “I know the London stock market was quite surprised,” she told Variety earlier this year. “But we knew that we had to do that to make this step change. Because without that, we wouldn’t be a powerful U.K. streamer.”
Itvx is primarily a free-to-watch AVOD platform, echoing ITV’s position as a commercial Psb, although it does offer an ad-free premium tier which also offers paying subscribers access to BritBox U.

Over six years after the finale of “Orphan Black,” AMC has returned with a first look at the upcoming spin-off “Orphan Black: Echoes.” The teaser was released as New York Comic Con enters its first day on Thursday.

Elizabeth Olsen told The Times of London in a recently-published interview (conducted pre-strike) that she is aggressively seeking a “variation” of characters after working for four years solely in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Olsen filmed “WandaVision” and “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” back to back, which was perhaps too much time dedicated to only playing Scarlet Witch. That’s a large reason Olsen was drawn to playing alleged axe murderer Candy Montgomery in Max’s “Love and Death.”
“I’m trying to figure out… Because, specifically in the last four years, my output has been Marvel,” Olsen said. “I don’t want… it’s not that I don’t want to be associated as just this character. But I really feel like I need to be building other parts back up for balance. I so much want to do films right now. And I hope some of them...

North Hollywood’s United American Costume Company has been dressing Hollywood since 1977. The company counts costume designers Sandy Powell, Arianne Phillips and Ellen Mirojnick among its clients, and has provided outfits for “Yellowstone” as well as “American Horror Story.” But with the writers and actors on strike, the business is in danger. “I could survive probably five months, but I would be left with nothing,” says the company’s owner, Diana Foster.
Across Hollywood and beyond, acute economic uncertainty is facing Foster and her employees and many other businesses. The shutdown doesn’t just mean that members of the actors and writers guilds are going without paychecks — in many cases, it’s left below-the-line workers out of work or fearful they may soon be jobless. For the people who provide the ball gowns and suits of armor that actors wear onscreen, the situation is growing more dire.

Gravitas Ventures has acquired U.S. and Canadian distribution rights to horror-thriller “Thirst.”
The film marks the directorial debut of musician Eric Owen, drummer with alternative rock duo Black Pistol Fire.
Written by Owen, in the film, insomnia spreads in a small town, causing fear and panic. As the situation becomes dire, two couples find salvation on an abandoned ranch until nefarious characters descend upon the land, claiming it as their own, and chaos ensues.
The film stars Brian Villalobos (HBO’s “Love and Death”) and Lori Kovacevich (“But Humble Sinners”). Josh Taylor produced alongside Owen.
The deal was negotiated between Glen Reynolds of Circus Road Films and Mackenzie Maguire of Gravitas Ventures. A release is planned for the fall.
Owen said: “’Thirst’ realizes all of my greatest fears and asks the question – how will we act when our reality becomes distorted and would we be civil when our own survival is jeopardized?...

Elizabeth Olsen‘s Godzilla was the actor’s first high-budget feature before being recruited by Marvel. But she wasn’t entirely convinced to do the creature feature until she was persuaded by a surprising source.

Olsen wasn’t too receptive about the idea of doing Godzilla. Before doing the film, Olsen crafted a career for herself with mostly indie films. But soon the Love and Death actor aimed her sights on big blockbuster franchises.

Among the most notable snubs: Harrison Ford in both Best Comedy Supporting Actor (“Shrinking”) and Best Drama Actor (“1923”), Paramount’s red-hot “Yellowstone” and 2022 nominees Christina Ricci (“Yellowjackets”) and Steve Martin (“Only Murders in the Building”). With its list of new releases for July 2023, Prime Video is going to help you stay safe from the oppressive July sun.
Highlighting the Amazon Originals on the TV side this month are two heavy hitters. The first is The Horror of Dolores Roach on July 7. Based on a podcast of the same name, this series could best be described as a modern day Sweeney Todd? Why, you ask? Well you know why. Think about it. Then season 2 of Neil Gaiman adaptation Good Omens premieres on July 28. This season will follow angel Aziraphale (Michael Sheen) and demon Crowley (David Tenant) as they seek to keep the Archangel Gabriel (Jon Hamm) away from both heaven and hell.
There aren’t any Amazon Original movies of note this month and that’s alright as the influx of library titles is more than enough. July 1 sees the arrival of The 40-Year-Old Virgin, No Country for Old Men,...

Also coming to Amazon’s free streaming service in July is the incredibly meta action series “Ze Network.” In the show, David Hasselhoff plays himself as he takes a gig at an English-language theater in Germany — and we all know that Germans love David Hasselhoff. With the true crime TV movie “Boston Strangler,” Keira Knightley has made a welcome return to the genre she excels in — period dramas. The new Hulu telefilm chronicles the true story of Loretta McLaughlin, the reporter who connected the murders of the Boston Strangler and broke the story for Boston Record American.
The killer murdered 13 women in the 1960s and McLaughlin (Knightley) reported on the ongoing story alongside Jean Cole (Carrie Coon) while dealing with the sexism of the era at the same time. Utilizing an American accent, which Knightley doesn’t often do, the actress is a firm presence on screen and carries the TV movie on her shoulders. It’s her haunting facial expressions and dogged determinism as McLaughlin that propels the movie forward. Without Knightley’s cutting central performance, the movie might not have worked, as critics have noted.

Domhnall Gleeson looks set to earn his first-ever Emmy nomination this year for his killer turn in the FX on Hulu limited series “The Patient,” opposite Steve Carell. The story follows Carell as Alan Strauss, a therapist mourning the death of his wife, who takes on a new patient — Gleeson’s unhinged Sam Fortner. However, Sam turns out to be a serial killer and he kidnaps Alan and holds him prisoner, forcing the therapist to help him overcome his murderous urges.
As Sam, Gleeson lets loose in what is a delicious performance. He clearly has fun in this role and matches Carell beat for beat. He is menacing, unnerving, pitiful, dangerous, and almost sympathetic. It’s a masterful performance from Gleeson and he never goes overboard into hammy territory, which would be easy to do with a role such as this. Critics have all praised Gleeson for his work here,...
