All Wil Be Carved! Join your horror hosts Kimmi & Jon for another edition of Drive Home From The Drive in. This week we’re reviewing Eli Roth’s hotly anticipated Holiday slasher Thanksgiving in all its gory glory. One of us may have liked this one a little bit more than the other (take a wild guess who) but it’d undeniable that Eli Roth knows how to deliver the goods when it comes to making an over-the-top, practical effects obsessed horror movie.
Set in a small New England town, Thanksgiving (2023) expands on Roth’s parody trailer from Grindhouse (2007) where an axe-wielding pilgrim goes on a murderous rampage leading up to Thanksgiving Day. It’s a tribute to everything great (and grating) about the Slasher subgenre, and although a little cleaner & more polished than the original short, makes for one hell of a good time at the movies. George Lucas’s 60s-set tale of California teens offers some freewheeling fun but also a lingering sadness
Ninety-nine times out of 100, the postscripts that get tucked in before the closing credits, telling us where the characters’ lives have gone from there, are totally unnecessary, especially in a fictional story where their fates are better left to the viewer’s imagination. But in George Lucas’s American Graffiti, which turns 50 this week, they are the most important part of the film, not least because two of the four characters don’t have much longer to live. We can feel that darkness lingering around the edges of Lucas’ dusk-till-dawn nostalgia piece about the last night of summer vacation in 1962 Modesto, California, even while its teenagers are getting into mostly light-hearted forms of trouble. This night has to end, and when the sun comes up, their entire world turns back into a pumpkin.

Chicago – One of the realizations that came out of the pandemic was that Drive-In movie theaters are still viable. When regular theaters closed, the Drive-In filled the void where they were available. Filmmaker April Wright has had a lifelong love for the Drive-In, and has explored their revival and challenges afterward in “Back to the Drive-In.” The documentary will have a limited two-day run at the historic Music Box Theatre in Chicago, click Drive-in Dreams for showtimes.
Rating: 4.0/5.0
Wright drove cross country to 11 Drive-Ins, both old-timey established and brand spanking new. What she found was a commonality between the owners and a love for what they do, or in some cases a reflection of a life in the business. What she also found was the magic of the Drive-In – beyond the infamous teenager reputation – that spoke to the future of this legendary way to see movies … which began over 100 years ago.

Photo: 'American Horror Stories'/FX The latest episode of ‘American Horror Stories’, ‘Drive In’, focuses on the urban legend behind many classic horror films, the idea that they are cursed. From the cast of ‘Poltergeist’ all dying after the film’s release to a killer working as an extra in ‘the Exorcist’ and now the in-universe film, ‘Rabbit Rabbit’ causing audiences to turn into rabid killers. The episode follows a normal high schooler couple whose sexcapade at a drive-in is interrupted by the reveal of the film really being cursed, turning everyone who watched the film instead of hooking up, including their friends, into zombie-like killers. The episode offers a fun thrill ride for any horror buff while showcasing why ‘American Horror Story’ might work better in this anthology format. The Pale Door was one of my favourite films from last year, so that set my menial mind in motion with a mission: watch more Horror Westerns, dagnabbit. A lesser known sub-genre to be sure (especially since Westerns are part of even more vicious cycles of popularity/decline than Horror), but one I’m eager to explore. With that in mind, let’s head over to Italy for Django the Bastard (1969), one of writer/director Sergio Garrone’s (The Hand That Feeds Death) unofficial sequels to the Django series made popular a few years earlier starring Franco Nero. And while this isn’t a full-on merger of the two, this duster sprinkles just enough menace around to offer further proof the two can exist together.
Although Django the Bastard was released in Italy in November, it didn’t hit North America until the spring of 1974, where it could hang third...

A Portland, Oregon, cinema center’s summer drive-in movie series has pulled a screening of the 1990 Arnold Schwarzenegger comedy Kindergarten Cop after some community and staff members complained that the film is out of step with local and national concerns about overpolicing.
Kindergarten Cop will be replaced at the Northwest Film Center’s Cinema Unbound Drive-in Theater on August 6 with a second screening of John Lewis: Good Trouble, the new documentary about the late civil rights icon. A previously scheduled August 7 screening of Good Trouble is sold out.
The rescheduling comes after a tweet Saturday by Portland author Lois Leveen, who wrote, “National reckoning on overpolicing is a weird time to revive Kindergarten Cop. Irl, we are trying to end the school-to-prison pipeline. There’s nothing entertaining about the presence of police in schools, which feeds the ‘school-to-prison’ pipeline in which African American, Latinx and other kids of color are criminalized rather than educated.

Summer is upon us. That is, summer as defined by movie studios which, in the 40 years since Star Wars was released, on May 25, 1977, have valiantly tried to stretch the boundaries of summer, content-wise, from the traditional June-July-August definition to include the other nine months of the year as well. (Mission pretty much accomplished, gentlemen. Thank you for your efforts.) As far as the actual summer movie season, it’s now more or less accepted that everything starts on the first weekend of May, and so it most certainly is this year. In case you hadn’t heard, a modest little picture called Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 debuts this weekend at an art house near you, and everyone you know, including you, have probably already bought advance tickets to see it. Me, I’m less similarly inclined. Despite my raised expectations from reviews and audience reports, I found the...

11 Drive-in Movie Movies (in alphabetical order):
Blue Thunder (1983) One key sequence in this thriller about a high-tech urban surveillance helicopter is staged (during the daylight hours) at the Pickwick Drive-in in Burbank, California, which was razed in 1990. The Pickwick, due to its proximity to the local movie studios, hosted many movie premieres, most famously that of Blazing Saddles in 1974, for which everyone in attendance was on horseback.
Brokeback Mountain (2005) In one scene after his return from Brokeback Mountain, Ennis (Heath Ledger) takes his wife Alma (Michelle Williams) on a date to a drive-in movie theater, which is lovingly (if briefly) recreated in the film. And it’s a very effective moment of movie magic too—the scene wasn’t filmed at a drive-in at all, but instead a converted softball field in Alberta, Canada.
Cars (2006) During the end credits, the cars are shown at the drive-in cinema enjoying parodies...
